If Abbott spends taxpayer money to compete in a couple of surf races I can't say that really bothers me. A fit and active political leader sets a good example to people (albeit that's counterbalanced by him being a complete twat with his personal beliefs). And it's markedly better than spending it on ridiculous flights, hotel stays, expensive lunches, wine and hookers.

Fair point, but it's a bit rough to lump him in the same category as the likes of Peter Slipper.

The only difference between him and Peter Slipper is that Abbott has been given the opportunity to pay the taxpayer back after being found out using public money for his private interests (such as promoting his book). Slipper wasn't provided the same courtesy and was immediately referred to the AFP.

Slipper was a repeat troublemaker and the amount of money he stole was significantly higher. Abbott may be a twat, but he's not even in the same league as Slipper.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's unacceptable what Abbott did and I'm partly playing devil's advocate so the forum righties can't say I only ever attack Abbott. But I think it's harsh to lump him with Slipper and co. who have been caught being far more frivolous.
