From when champ? Seems to be the same level from
When Rudd V.2 introduced Manus Island and Nauru.

Nope they've dropped considerably since Rudd got throw out for a second time. Don't forget Rudd and Labor single handedly created this disaster by dismantling the pacific solution only to later reinstate it and incredibly claim credit for slowing boat arrivals. It's shocking hypocrisy and indicative of the kind of morally diseased party labor is.

If you're going to make a claim like that they've "dropped considerably" you're going to need to back that up with some kind of statistics and/or an article featuring more than just hearsay or Abbott blowing his own trumpet.

Tony Abbott's quick fix to turn back asylum-seeker boats backfires

ANALYSIS

When the late great Peter Brock promoted a performance enhancing device using crystals to ''align the molecules'' of engines, some people bought it.

About the only thing his ''energy polariser'' polarised, though, was opinion about the Bathurst legend.

The same was so (evidently) with Tony Abbott and Scott Morrison's aggressively marketed asylum-seeker tomahawk sold under the label ''stop the boats''.

Some people bought it, many wanted to believe.

Canberra would simply turn back the boats to Indonesia with the only caveat being, ''when it was safe to do so''. ''Safe'', you will note. Not ''politic'', not ''agreed'', not ''in co-operation with'', just ''safe''.

Yet, since the election, since actually being in charge and having responsibility for outcomes rather than slogans, the government is finding that it is not that easy. International relationships are complex and multi-factorial.

The Abbott government's response to that embarrassing realisation is about as contemptuous of the voters now as the Coalition had been of the previous Australian government, or for that matter, of any likely Indonesian sensitivities.

This has brought another transformation from Morrison, who has shamelessly flipped from loud and omnipresent critic to indignant introvert.

Snapping superciliously at reporters who have the temerity to ask legitimate questions about the conduct of the policy at a once-a-week press conference merely makes the problem worse. Australian voters will eventually wake up to the fact that they were sold a pup.

If it were merely a case of sending boats back, it would have been tried years ago. Which, by the way, it was, and it even worked a handful of times until people smugglers and their desperate clientele worked out a response. Until a political party (now in office) started shouting explicitly about an aspect of policy that had, until then, been decidedly unofficial.

It gets worse for Australia than a bit of well-deserved facial egg for Morrison and Abbott.

After revelations that the Australian embassy in Jakarta is being used to conduct spying operations, the Indonesian government is sending back a few messages of its own. And it's not bothering with codes. Goodwill is on the line. Increased cross-border co-operation and intelligence sharing is suddenly problematic.

Facing their own domestic political pressures, the Indonesians are wondering why they would share intelligence, when (i) that information may be used against the country's national interest in the case of unilateral boat turn-backs, and (ii) is being gathered anyway through spying.

Now we have the admission a boatload of people intercepted on Thursday was refused permission to return to port despite being intercepted in the Indonesian search and rescue zone.

Its human cargo of misery has been taken to Christmas Island.

If the same had occurred on the previous government's watch, this would be cue for much exclamation and hand-wringing.

Indeed it would be proof of policy failure.

As with Brock's pseudo-scientific ''energy polariser'', Abbott's super-clear, super-simple boats fix convinced some, but it was always too easy.

The success or failure of operation sovereign borders doesn't hinge on turning boats around , it's just one aspect of a wider suite of policy measures.

The end goal isn't turning every single boat back around to Indonesia, the end goal is stopping the boats. Sometimes boats will be turned around (two have been already) sometimes they won't, clearly you're all just zeroing on one trivial setback because you're all terrified of the clear picture at is emerging and that is that the policies are working wonders and illegal boat arrivals are drastically down. So course any kind of "hiccup" you will desperately cling onto and blow massively out of proportion because you have no real ammo left.

Idiots

lol......like when Abbott and Hockey were jostled and roughed up by militant students last week......abused and prevented from entering the educational facility......all because of the changes to funding put in place by Gillard & Rudd.......but when Gillard & Rudd turned up no one was hassled.....it's just the agenda of lefties.....simplistic......

It could be left-wing agenda. Or in REALITY it's probably because Gillard and Rudd didn't slash education funding, cut jobs from the CSIRO and fold the ministry for Sciences portfolio.
rusty wrote:

REPORTS of boat arrivals might be down 90%. Because Abbott passed bills banning it from being reported. The number of arrivals are still the same.

Also, although claiming to have reduced arrivals by 90% he hasn't provided any literature or statistics to support that other than his word.

How is that different to before though? It was well known to most here that the Indonesians wouldn't help. What I believe most of us here are pointing out that the Libs lied (perhaps consciously otherwise it's just flat out incompetence) about how they were going to "Stop the boats".

Apart from not reporting on things and hiding behind a 3 star general, nothing they are doing is any different to what Labor put in place.

Oh look, the boats can't be turned around. Just like I said before the election.

Oh look, the journalists having a sook because an opposition that mercilessly used information from Labor Govt to gain Government themselves via journalists attacking said Labor Govt, have stopped giving that information to the journalists.

Indonesia aren't going to do shit. They never will.

All you have to do is go to google and type in 'asylum seeker arrivals October' or something similar and do a bit of sleuthing and you will find the required information. It's really not that hard to find.

Incredulous. What labor "put in place" was dismantling the Howard era measures which were proven to work. Png and Nauru processing, excising Xmas Island from the mainland, etc etc are all LIBERAL ideas, labor just fucked everything up and in doing hundreds possibly thousands of innocents needlessly died. Rudd just revived the hardline approach the liberals had crafted because by then he figured his own ideas and measures were shit and he had to go back in time six years to fix his own fuck ups. Critically what was missing from his liberal esque hardline was turning boats around, which has been achieved twice did since he was usurped and is a critical feature of sovereign borders but not dependant on it. It's no magic coincidence boat arrivals are drastically down since the change of government.
