How long has she been doing it? If she keeps good record of what she's working and what she's being paid and then takes it to the FWC, it's likely that the company would be in for a huge fine and she would win considerable backpay.

for a while. I only found out today. No one wants to tell me , as im a former union member they know I will take it further

Gotta bide your time, no point going in swinging.

Do the research of laws and awards and calculate what she should have been paid. Guessing that she's casual, although if she can demonstrate that she's been a "systematic" casual worker for over 6 months (regular times & shifts, etc) then she will be eligible to be protected as a part-time worker.

What is the minimum casual rate for a 16 year old?

$9 is shite.

I used to get paid more 14 years ago.

That's not true.

The reason behind it is that if they are paying people less, companies can employ more people. Which just doesn't make sense, because businesses will always just see that as a minimisation of costs and won't hire/roster on more people.

Of all the possible reasoning that they could use, this is the worst and is inconsistent with the message that the government has been trying to convey... although, nobody should really be surprised at this governments complete lack of economic competence or consistency at this point I guess.

Simply put, employers employ when there is a need for employees, not because they're suddenly allowed to pay their current employees less.

Of course businesses want to reduce their wage bill, they don't want to waste money on superfluous staff.

Look at the example though... There really aren't multiple truths here.

In what circumstance does it make sense for anyone to fire a loyal and cheap employee because they can't make one shift, and to hire a new one who they have to train and will inevitably not be able to work everyday for the rest of their lives.

I'm not talking about my store at all. I'm talking about standard business sense, at any level.

Are you able to explain why I'm wrong other than just saying so?

There will always be shit employers, but I'm sure they wouldn't just drop her like that though. It's not worth any company's time to hire a new employee and train them just because a 16 year old said no to 1 shift.

oh this pharmacy will.

That makes absolutely no business sense.

I think it's entirely plausible for a small business owner to have more ego than business sense, don't you think?

It doesn't have to make sense to be true is the point I was making.

It's not even implausible, it's common. Ego and stubbornness takes over from business sense and cognitive dissonance with alarming regularity.

My point was that you're both silly calling each other out, because it's likely that you're both correct.

I think Abbott might be gaining a little bit of self-awareness.

Much too late, of course.

It would be brilliant if Abbott loses today but I really can't see it happening, unfortunately. The impression I get is that unless a large proportion of the ministry flips and decides to vote in favour of a spill (with the protection of a secret ballot), the motion won't pass. In the unlikely event of the spill succeeding, though, then Turnbull will challenge and win the vote.

Either way, I doubt Abbott will survive this long term. He's been massively undermined and it seems unlikely that he will be able to turn things around. Gradually Turnbull's numbers will rise.

Although - and this might be good news for Turnbull's chances today - the Newspoll is Abbott's worst ever. Labor lead the Coalition 57-43 on the two party preferred, and Abbott's satisfaction rating (24%) is a nearly a third of his dissatisfaction rating (68%).

Hoping Tony stays. He won't be able to do any more damage to the country being a political lame duck until the next election when we'll all get the catharsis of watching him lose in a landslide massacre to make Howard losing his own seat look like a narrow defeat.

Think it would suck for Tony if it were an unsuccessful spill in regards to knowing there are people that want you out etc.

Sorta stuff harms decent political unity (which is what Australia has been begging for years now thanks to the ALP's circus).
