Lol the cost of living is massively higher now that 20/30 years ago. Inflation has gone up massively compared to wages, and now housing is spiking even higher. Anyone who thinks things are cheaper now is deluded.

Wot!

Every single household appliance is cheaper than it was 20 years ago. Shit the first VCR we bought cost $800.00.

My brother paid $2400 for a 42 inch plasma in 2007 and now you can get them at one third the price.

We paid $1200 for a washing machine in 1997, went overseas for 4 years ($2400 return) and came back and bought a bigger one for 600 less. 14 years later we just bought another one and it was the same price with more capacity and a better warranty. The same thing with refrigerators.

I flew to Europe the year before last and it cost me $1800 return.

Cars now come with a 5 or even a 7 year unlimited warranty. When I was a kid it was 20 000 kms and 12 months that was it. They're more affordable than ever. http://www.news.com.au/finance/money/car-affordability-hits-new-high-prices-at-new-lows/story-e6frfmcr-1227010447528 http://www.macrobusiness.com.au/2014/03/new-car-affordability-best-in-38-years/ http://www.allianz.com.au/car-insurance/news/cars-most-affordable-in-35-years

My dad paid $2000 in 1974 to fly to Europe return. $2000!!! In those days.

In 1997 it was $800.00 return to fly from Darwin to Sydney.

If the cost of living is so expensive how come everyone has a mobile phone, every house has 2, 3 or even 4 computers and laptops not to mention at least 2 TV's. XBoxes, playstations, 2 cars parked in the driveway and a boat down the side or a pool in the back yard if not both.

The Commodore 64 we bought in 1983 when they came out was $300 from Myers (nee Grace Bros). The big floppy disk drive which plugged into was $150. Fucked if I know how Dad afforded it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8pK_q-_6dw ($499 in this ad.)

Overseas holidays at Christmas are par for the course these days and no one blinks twice.

Toasters are $12. Levis (501's) when I was a kid were well north of $100.

CD's were $29.99 in 1992. The best discount you could get was if you went to Big W and got them for $26.00.

When I got my cheap arse 10 speed racer 30 odd years ago I remember it was $126 from Kmart. You can buy the same cheap arse bike from kmart with 30 gears for 50 bucks less.

Every single tool in Bunnings is a half to one third the price of what they used to be and not just your cheap rubbish like Ozito. Your DeWalts and Makitas were something only a hard core, well paid tradesman had, now every bastard has them.

Bloody hell you could go on and on all day if you wanted to.

It's miles and miles cheaper to buy shit these days.

Anyone that thinks it isn't wasn't alive 20 years ago.

What people are willing to pay for property is ridiculous. A shitty little property that really is just a one room asbestos shack and an outhouse down the road from me sold for $630k up from $510k last year.It was being sold as a dream place to build but you can't realistically do anything on it as acts as the drain for the whole town and backs onto the bush.

Lol. Buying random shit might be cheaper but you've got nowhere to put it without spending loads more in either rent or a mortgage.

Median house price in Sydney in 1995 was $196,750.

Average weekly wage in 1995 was $661.40

Median house price in Sydney in 2015 is $915,000. A 365% increase. And is only going to get worse.

Average wage in 2015 is $1,476.30. A 120% increase. And will barely move in the next few years.

Houses and land are much more expensive but cars and appliances are much cheaper. It's often got to do with competition. There is little competition for houses so they are more expensive but there are a million different appliance/car companies.

As mentioned previously Sydney (and Melbourne) are different cases from the rest of Australia.

Put it like this, would you get on a plane that was piloted by a student who had studied all about flying theory but didn't have any hours flying time????

It's the same in every arm of engineering. Old people whinging because 'they've done it before'.

I've had builders try and tell me a vertical cut in fill is fine because they've never seen it fail. Then again they're just lazy f*ckers who don't like being told how to do things properly ;)

No one said you were wrong. I said maybe someone with more experience than you knew better. Go back to page 668 and have another look if you don't believe me.

You've gotten you knickers in a major twist over not much at all.

Well obviously it's annoying to have the insinuation that I don't know what I'm doing because I only have 3 years experience. I've seen a lot in 3 years. It's something I cop a lot from assholes who are old and have a chip on their shoulder about being told what to do by someone young enough to be their son.

It's as rude as me suggesting you're out of touch because a lot can change in 20 years. I'm not for one minute suggesting that's the case but hopefully you can see where I'm coming from as a justification for my annoyance?

Benels, by reading these recent posts it seems those old blokes and you have chips on the shoulder :)
How would you go with a 15yr old telling you your wrong for eg ? maybe you'd be an old arsehole to he ;)

Getting back onto the Sydney real estate market.
The timing was ironic listening to the radio heading home - they had quoted 84,000 migrants into Sydney p/a.
Having just checked the Bereau of Stats they quote 73,300 p/a.
Vic is 59,358 and rest follow down down etcetc.

So thats part the reason why Real Estate is higher here in Sydney. Its No1 destination.

Myself being in the market loving the equity.
Have 3 kids - savesavesave they can do it.
When I bought my first home with my wife I thought it was the biggest hill to climb, lived with my parents for 12mths + to save more gaining our deposit.
Signing my life away on that triple figure mortgage was pissing me off seriously, also as mentioned living miles away from where I grew up.
Its either ship up or ship out here in Syd imo.
New world getting more ruthless, more people want to live here therefore you have to make a choice.

Apart from that as Murub quotes commodities are far less than long before but people can't help themselves spending because its cheap LOL.......but what about tomorrow next week next month next year when you really need it !
Large % of people are living pay packet to pay packet because they can't control their spending.
No one can do without.
Impulse buying at the servo.
Impulse betting because its on the mobile.

I grew up with only 1 tv in the house - how many on average are in homes/garages/sheds today.
1 pair of casual sports shoes - how many differing colours/use types in the cupboard.
i pair of Adidas boots lasted 4seasons Shin pads were for wimps, straps were for girls :) now you see new boots worn every season, new style/colours etcetc - you got to be looked upon being cool or with the times ;)
1 push bike that did all - now, racing bike, mountain bike, freestyle, etcetcetc
A second hand car for years - oh know I need a new one now

Life wasn't meant to be easy Mal said ;) similar whinging different decade :o but this time Hockey is the moron I observe
Its always someone else fault ;)

Only accounts of it happening at the moment but...

I think it's important to acknowledge that "the boats" haven't stopped. There were reports of a boat wrecking off the indonesian coast that got turned around so the government isn't really saving lives either.

The whole language of "whatever it takes" and "by hook or by crook" is dangerous too. Does that mean we'll blow these fishing boats up if that will stop them?

Some "sactions" and hard words by the UN?

Only people who care about that crap are smelly lefty Gen Y wankers.

Don't you mean smelly Gen Y "leftard" wankers?

Seriously though, I hold the UN in about the same regard as FIFA. It's not about what they can do but more about what we are happy with our government doing on this issue. Using tax payers money to bribe people smugglers is a novel "deterrent" and I'm curious to know if people who have been so supportive of the LNP's methods, happy with this one too.

That's not to mention the one "victory" the LNP have had is stopping the boats but they still seem to be coming and lives are being lost at sea. Surely there is a more humane way to play our part in this global problem :-k

The same Gen Y wankers who are pissed off with house prices because they 'live for the moment' and spent $30k on a series of holidays and get pissed every night instead of saving a deposit for a house.

The new Greens leader seems to be a reasonable bloke. Backing good policy instead of rejecting everything.

After watching Netflix's US House of Cards, and comparing it to the Killing Season on ABC Iview, I find the Killing Season to be far more compelling drama

And its ironic that Kevin is the lead man in both situations, Spacey and Rudd
