More than half the party knifed Abbott, despite the prior chest thumping on how, unlike others, they don't knife their own.Fast forward to 2017 & Turnbull is in the exact same position Abbott was after his election.....getting smashed post election in poll after poll

And so he should.

Our politicians should lead by example and start being lifters and not leaners. Why should our tax dollars fund their lifestyle choices?

For the first time, but certainly not the last, I began to believe that Arsenals moods and fortunes somehow reflected my own. - Hornby

PM is into his 4th cabinet reshuffle since taking office.

Have many other governments of the day gone through that many ministers in the same amount of time?

Did a good job a transport minister, finally getting the ball rolling with the Sydney metro project, plus the south-east/ george st light rail project. At least now the city won't grind to a halt in the next 30 years.

Essential Research maintains the 54-46 deficit for the Libs, that they've had for a couple of months now.

With dire poll after dire poll, I wonder how long the Libs will persist with Turnbull. I'm not really sure they have anyone who can step up.
I think Julie Bishop is the only one who has the charisma to endear the populace.

Clean energy subsidies could be used to build new coal power plants,

Scott Morrison says

Key points:

  • Experts warn more coal power stations could see power prices double
  • Josh Frydenberg says Australia must take a "technology neutral" approach to energy
  • Frydenberg says the Government remains committed to its emissions reduction target
Mr Morrison's statement came after Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull claimed Australia had an obligation to be at the forefront of coal technology."Coal is a big part of the future under a Coalition Government and clearly that's not the case under the alternative," Mr Morrison told the ABC."It's the Clean Energy Finance Corporation — it's not the wind energy finance corporation."However energy experts have warned power prices for consumers could double, not fall, if new coal-fired power stations are built."Several authorities' projections, including from the CSIRO, put the price of new coal at $80 a megawatt hour, and new wind and solar around the same level — but we are seeing lower prices achieved day by day [for wind and solar]," the Australian Industry Group's principle national advisor Tennant Reed told The Business. The price per megawatt hour for a new coal generator is closer to $160 a megawatt hour, according to work done by Bloomberg New Energy Finance."The price of $80 a megawatt hour for clean coal power assumes a uniform cost of funding between wind, solar and coal and that's simply not the case," Bloomberg's Kobad Bhavnagri said.

We must be technology-neutral: Frydenberg

Energy Minister Josh Frydenberg said he was committed to a "technology neutral" approach to energy, with a new cabinet subcommittee created to oversee progress.Speaking in Adelaide, Mr Frydenberg said a blackout in South Australia last year was a wake-up call for the nation.
"We need to be technology-neutral when it comes to making decisions about our energy policy — we don't want to be ideological," he said.
At the National Press Club on Wednesday, Mr Turnbull said the Government had invested $590 million in clean-coal technology since 2009, despite Australia not having a high-efficiency, low-emission power station.Media player: "Space" to play, "M" to mute, "left" and "right" to seek.VIDEO: Malcolm Turnbull says the Coalition will prioritise energy security and storage. (ABC News)"The next incarnation of our national energy policy should be technology-agnostic," he said.Mr Frydenberg said clean-coal technology was being used throughout Asia, with more than 700 so-called clean-coal power stations built in India."Australia, as the biggest coal exporter in the world, should be looking at how we can roll out similar technologies," he said. The Energy Minister said renewable energy would still play a role in the Australian market but called for more investment in alternative energy storage such as pump hydro."Renewables have a big role to play but there are challenges that are posed by their integration into the system because when the sun is not shining or the wind is not blowing, the power is not being generated," he said.Mr Frydenberg said the Government remained committed to its 2020 renewable energy target, despite reports US President Donald Trump would withdraw from the Paris Climate Change agreement."We have made our commitment to the emissions reduction target and that is something that we are on track to meet," he said.

Labor not convinced

Labor's shadow treasurer Chris Bowen said the Opposition would need to see the proposal for more coal plants before offering support."Cleaner coal can play a role but we need to see if there's going to be a policy proposal to change the mandate of the CEFC or anything like that — we'd need to see a proposal," he told Sky News. The Opposition's spokesman for climate change and energy, Mark Butler, said a preference for coal over renewables would mean higher power bills for Australians."While the rest of the world is investing in renewables, Malcolm Turnbull is talking about new investment in coal," he said."While coal will remain part of our energy mix for the foreseeable future, everyone knows new investment in coal is ridiculously expensive and will push up power prices and push up pollution."

Renewable energy cheaper: Climate Council

Climate Council chief executive Amanda McKenzie said Australia's energy system was old and inefficient and investment in new power plants was necessary."Building any new power plant will have costs," she said."Renewable energy is now cheaper to build than new coal plants and has no fuel costs, because the sun and the wind are free."Ms McKenzie praised the Prime Minister for focusing on energy security, describing it as "a big missing piece" from Australia's energy mix."Ensuring supply requires building more power stations, storage and improving the nature of the grid," she said.

I would like to see the numbers on how much cheaper renewable energy would be. Maybe in 2060 it might be cheaper but the costs of establishing the grid would have to be passed on to 'customers' in some way.

Wtf is "clean coal technology" meant to be lol?

40% less emissions! (of stupidly high levels of emissions which is still terrible)

And how bout the 1.75mil donation? Give money to the party that then wins that secures you as PM which then nets you financial benefits.

Is that not basically money laundering lol?

This is my biggest worry about Trump.  His foreign policy is already a disaster.  He needs to keep his cool otherwise they are going to be left with very few allies.  The White house has already been described as a "Lord of the Flies" type scenario.  Will be interesting to see if more people abandon ship.

It's just not obvious to right wingers that it was going to be the case.
It simply comes down to the fact that they are literally too fukcing stupid.

The left simply underestimated how stupid their fellow average Americans are.
Plenty regret not voting.

Doesnt it just show you how poor the judgement is from the left, joffatossa? That they fell for all the silly polls and expected dearest Hillary to waltz into the white house without a hitch? Perhaps its the left who are "stupid", you never ever take an election result for granted. The left just have a bee in their bonnet because were outwitted and outsmarted by a republican, hence all the petulant public temper tantrums currently on display.

So we acheived 40% in coal emissions people are scoffing at that? Truth is even if they acheived 99% reductions the enviro lobby would still complain bitterly. Their war is with mining.

People still havent cottoned onto the fact that developing countries like India are going to be GORGING on coal for the next decased, regardless of what we do here with our cutesy wootsy renawable and carbon policies. We can either be the economic beneficiaries of that demand or we can sit on the sidelines with our arms crossed and protest signs watching other countries run away with the cash.

The capital cost is always going to be the deterrent for renewable/sustainable energy but I'd much rather start the process of absorbing that cost now than continuing to pay for a power source that is becoming outdated instead.
I'm not sure if there is any attraction for the energy companies to build new coal powered stations. Last I heard they all wanted to build natural gas power stations because they are much more cost effective and efficient to run. Coal stations take forever to fire up or adjust their load.

Pretty much lock step with what is happening federally
I expect them to do deals, as the race/immigration card is a guaranteed vote grabber
