Okay, so out of that whole list of football clubs posted (I'm not going to bother with all the other sports, we're only talking about football here, and that list even says that many or defunct or minor league sides), the following are professional sides:

Glasgow Rangers FC - Scotland
Queens Park Rangers FC - England
CSD Rangers - Chile
Rangers F.C - Kenya
Enugu Rangers - Nigeria

I can't find where the names of these clubs have come from, oh well... A good number of the teams posted though were either outside professional football, no longer exist or have been renamed (of which all are non-professional). But yeah, posting a huge list does look impressive.

Professional clubs called Wanderers:

Bolton Wanderers FC - England
Wolverhampton Wanderers FC - England
Wycombe Wanderers FC - England
Montevideo Wanderers FC - Uruguay
Santiago Wanderers - Chile

Not to mention having been the name of one of the truly legendary clubs of the early days of the game Wanderers FC.

Everyone asks about the significance about 'Athletic' i say this to you, What is significant about it, is that the fans of the club chose it. There is your historical and emotional significance. It could be even argued that west sydney is the most sought after sporting market in Australia at the moment, thus the significance of the "Athletic" tag

Just had a look at the names:
Athletic
Wanderers
Strikers
Wolves
Rangers

Apart from Athletic, the rest are very uninspiring. Can somebody tell me the significance of the other 4 names?

What exactly makes Athletic so significant? We all know the team will be athletes. Strikers sounds like the only bad one to me from that list

The first game known to have occurred in New South Wales under Association Football rules was played between The Wanderers and The Kings School rugby football team at Parramatta Common on 14 August, 1880

How is Athletic inspiring?

Strikers or Wolves would just be a mess, why name themselves after an NSL side they aren't connected to? Rangers is just pathetic, so really it should come down to Athletic or Wanderers. But they can call themselves whatever they want... even if its terrible...

...what I can say though really, I support a side call the Roar.

Really uninspiring copied names.Gee you only get one chance to capture the fans imagination. It will be a lost opportunity if one of those from the list is chosen.West Syd Wombats would be better and thats saying something.

Looking at the list I'm surprised they didn't get things like:

Wombles
Gunners
Toffees
Villa
Cottagers
Magpies
Latics

Speaking of the Toffees as a name though, they were going for "The People's Club" at one point. Then again, when we're unique we get things like Glory, Roar, Victory and Fury... Still, those names are getting their own history, except Fury sadly.

wanderers has the historical meaning behind it. the first game played here, in 1880 i think it was,was between the wanderers and kings school.
as for strikers, wolves and rangers there is no significance. thats why i honestly think we should not pick either strikers or wolves for sure, as they already have significance in other areas, such as brisbane and woollongong.

Rangers: Have you heard of the Great Dividing Range? It "ranges" from Cape York down to Victoria, straight through the West of Sydney!

Quote:
The Great Dividing Range:The ranges are also home to some amazing species of animals and plants that are survivors of Gondwana. The Wollemi Pine, recently found growing in a gorge of the Blue Mountains, is a living dinosaur of the plant world.

The Blue Mountains is a mountainous region in New South Wales, Australia. It borders on Sydney's metropolitan area, its foothills starting approximately 50 kilometres (31 mi) west of the state capital. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Mountains_(New_South_Wales)

There you go - The players will be based at the foot of the Ranges, which would make them "Rangers" ;)

The club doesnt describe the players, it describes the community, culture, fans and what ideologies the club represents.

West Sydney is a chance to capitalise on the sheer number of registered players (athletes)

Melbourne at one stage had more to a single game than the entire registered playing numbers in Victoria. So while their players may be Athletic, the name would have been a funny way to align with elitist football followers who may never have kicked a ball in their life.

Athletic can be an iconic name if the club intends to capitalise on playing numbers and if it wants 60%-70% of its members involved in football clubs. Thats what is would mean when somebody says "we are Athletic"

Spot on.It's much easier to trawl through existing club names than to come up with your own.I wonder if anyone will bother to check whether intellectual property rights such as trade marks are an issue? When you copy other team names you can open up a can of worms and limit your marketing reach. If Wanderers was adopted you may find rights exist with another club.

Didn't Gorman say that there was a problem with one of the popular names. I am guessing wanderers, given that most people seem to be a sucker for alliteration.

Wanderers mean Homeless or European team gypsy's and the team from 1880 has no meaning to West Sydney it was just a school not a football club and it depicts Parramatta there not the only city that makes up the west of sydney. And how many Title or trophies or cups have they won a big fat Zero.

As much as I dislike copied names,it occurred to me that Wanderers are a unique Australian Butterfly.Plus they have orange/red and black colouring, which seems to fit in with the preferred colour scheme.Maybe not such a macho image though.Maybe West Sydney Wasps.

The Wanderers were a football club not a school, they were just formed by a school teacher.

Shows how much Melburnians know about the geography of Sydney...

Just because you guys passed up the chance to have an awesome name for your second team doesn't mean West Sydney should make the same mistake=;

west sydney wanderers fits well. though we may struggle to get that name since there are a couple of wanderers teams in nsw, on a national level we will be the only wanderers club so the name would be uniquely ours and it sounds good and has a historical meaning behind it.

I must admit as much as i want West Sydney Alliance to be the name there is zero chance of this name being the one. Im 99% certain that Wanderers will be the name chosen in the coming weeks.
Im happy with the colours though and just hope they will look good when the new kit comes out.

Possibly, there could be another club in the Sydney area that claims lineage to the original 19th century wanderers fc. This could be the legal issue that someone on the forum said that loyal Gorman stated was a problem for one of the popular names.

If this is the case, it could be possible for the new club to use wanderers (if it is chosen) as the name IF there is no formal acknowledgement from the new Sydney club that it has any linear connection to the original wanderers fc, and that it is just coincidence and/or fan favor that the name will be (possibly) chosen.

Edited by sobkowski: 12/5/2012 11:07:36 PM

there was sydney wanderers (a croatian and maltese club), but they merged.
i cant see much legal difficulties, as look how many united's there are in all the leagues.
i think lyall mentioned the legal difficulties may be if the word 'wanderers' is on a scarf by itself. though you can add a WS in front of it, thats the same colour at the scarf
