50k+ in its first season? cmon Joffa the Melbourne Derby cant even fill up Etihad yet.

Would love for you to be right though.. i just dont want to see 25k at ANZ over a sold out 20k at Parra. Atmosphere + the buzz of a sellout would be moles better vs ANZ

1 at SFS, 1 at Parramatta, 1 at ANZ. That would work.

i would like to see the first derby played at SFS, so we can see whether or not we can pull greater than 40k, then decide accordingly for the derbies of the season after.

So, is there actually any news out of this "club" yet?

Players?
Sponsors?
Kits?
Stadium?
Training base?
NAME?

Fuck the season isn't all that fucking far away... SFC have already started pre-season for mother fucking fuck sake!

EDIT: Training base is at the football NSW headquarters, so thats a start I guess, but seriously they better hurry the fuck up with everything else!

I think pretty much all other clubs have already started selling 2012/13 membership packages, WS can't even say where they are playing!

the journey will be no more than half an hour for those in the city. for those in the west, it would take around 20minutes or 25/30 minutes from the south-west. for anz stadium that is

for the game at parramatta stadium ,the express train service would get you there in 35 minutes from the city.

I hate how the AFL bods now refer to the Giants as GWS. I hope that won't happen with our new club. WSW is to much of a mouthful. Hopefully they will be referred to as West Sydney or Wanderers.

Damn letter W! Reminded me of this :)

Takes me an hour to get to Etihad and an hour home so that's pretty good. Looking forward to big crowds :)

i hope WSW have a bigger crowd average than SFC, that would be gold

Obviously Sydney isn't Melbourne, but if you look at the figures you can see that depending on the venue, the derby typically draws greater attendances than both Melbourne teams averages combined...remembering of course that the derbies inflate the averages.

Melbourne Victory 15,234
Melbourne Heart 8,315

Attendance: 25,897
Attendance: 23,059
Attendance: 32,231

Melbourne Victory 20,281
Melbourne Heart 9,082

Attendance: 39,309
Attendance: 26,579
Attendance: 26,395

Sydney FC 7,656
Sydney FC 11,861

If the two Sydney teams are both drawing about 12k(Sydney FC can easily draw 15k plus when doing well) then you would be looking at about 30k and with media support and advertising...50k shouldn't be an unrealistic stretch.

sydney fc usually pull around 20k home fans whenever they play against melbourne victory so there couldnt possibly be less than that many if they were to play at anz stadium. west sydney could also match it so 40k would be a good possibility, BUT a lot of fans have expressed their discontent with anz stadium due to the atmosphere where you are so far away from the action(especially behind the goal) and also about how you need atleast 60k to generate an atmosphere there.

if ffa want to maximise the total fans attending, then having two games at the SFS and one at parramatta stadium would probably be the best and safest option for this season

^ that would really suck if true.

they wouldnt call us WSW as it doesnt exactly define the club. We will either be referred to as Western Sydney or The Wanderers during play.

keep the derby at Parramatta. The aleague needs more sellouts than just the 2 Melbourne Derbies at aami and the final. could possibly help the membership drive as well due to the lack of tickets for the game.

Just have a full stadium:shock:

Unfortunately that is not an option because the clubs need the cash that the bigger crowd delivers.

Lets hope its substantially more the.The economics of having ANZ for a 25k crowd compared to a Para crowd of 21k couldn't be that much different.

I sincerely hope that 40k + turn up.

1 game at Parra
1 game at SFS
1 game at ANZ

no disadvantage to any team. 3rd game is basically a neutral venue.

ANZ do a good deal so it is cheaper to hire it than Parramatta. Add to that the increased gate and the difference becomes quite substantial.

40k would be great. The crowd at the Socceroos dead rubber against Bahrain was 39k with the bottom bowl only opened and the atmosphere was pretty much the same as for the 70k crowd at the MCG against Japan the next week because you are so much closer to the play along the sides at ANZ.

Actually makes sense if 'The Official' name is 'Western Sydney...' on the badge and what not, being more formalised and even 'traditional sounding.' But it's all good - You see, colloquially, you and all the fans and those around the game can still choose to call them 'West Sydney' and media outlets will probably do that same too! People will naturally go for what 'rolls off the tongue,' especially we Aussies.

Just be thankful, this code is actually FROM and even OF the area, rather than FOREIGN, like another code making it's 'attempt' in the area. It's name just reflects this - 'Greater Western Sydney' rofl what a joke of a 'franchise' title, that is. They may aswell have called it 'Greater Western NSW' or something. Infact it sounds like the NFL, NBA, MLB or the like from the US, rather than the AFL, set up a new 'franchise' out there, lol. But anyway, I wouldn't be surprised if AFL fans, those in the AFL, just dub it 'West Sydney' themselves, aswell?

That's a major reason why the Wests Tigers rugby league club made the explicit decision to call themselves Wests, and not Western. Because they didn't want to be perceived as American.

I would have thought its because Western Suburbs Magpies were commonly referred to as Wests and because the affiliated leagues club was also called Wests. Im sure it had nothing to do with the american angle especially considering Wests tigers sounds very Americanised

Was it always called Wests magpies leagues club, or did they rename it that after they became the Wests tigers?

I remember that they specifically noted that it is Wests, and not western for that reason.

Pretty sure its been referred to as wests for most of the clubs existence (90 years in top flight), although it wasn't the official name. I never heard anything like that at the time but your probably right as i didnt support either team so i didn't pay too much attention.

It was told to the Balmain side of the joint venture that it would be Western Tigers - i.e. the Tigers being the dominant partner. It was sold to Wests as Wests Tigers i.e. Balmain misses out and Western Suburbs is the dominant partner.

All it meant was that thousands of league supporters were disenfranchised - many that only have a cursory interest in the game now.
