Former Emmerdale actress Jenna-Louise Coleman to replace Karen Gillan as Doctor Who's new companion

From: The Daily Telegraph March 22, 2012 5:22PM

DOCTOR Who, the Time Lord, is to have a new leading lady.
Jenna-Louise Coleman will join Matt Smith in Doctor Who's 2012 Christmas special.

The 25-year-old replaces actress Karen Gillan, who played Amy Pond in the BBC series, shown in Australia on ABC.

Doctor Who's show runner Steven Moffat refused to reveal anything about Coleman's character.

"Absolutely nothing - you're going to have to wait and see! It's not the usual kind of story, it's a very, very different way for the Doctor to meet his new friend, so (I can tell you) absolutely nothing. Not even the name."

Coleman landed the part of lesbian Jasmine Thomas in Emmerdale in 2005, and has also appeared in Waterloo Road and Captain America: The First Avenger.

The 25-year-old will soon be seen as cabin steward Annie Desmond in Julian Fellowes's drama Titanic, commissioned to mark the centenary of the ship's sinking.

Gillan was confirmed to be departing Doctor Who along with co-star and on-screen husband Arthur Darvill (Rory Wilson) in December.

It is known that they will leave part way through series seven in a "heartbreaking end", and Gillan has teased that her exit will have a "strong impact".

She also assured fans that her final Doctor Who storyline is "going to be damn good", adding that Amy will go out "on a high".

-has just noticed this forum lacks a Doctor Who thread, disappointed-

Gonna miss the Ponds but she seems like a good replacement for mine. Will reserve judgement, like I did when Matt was announced as The Doctor, when I see her character.

EDIT: Also from Blackpool! From the Seaside to the TARDIS \:d/

Can't get much better in my opinion. With every shite episode there's twenty or so captivating episodes. I grew up with Mum showing me Tom Baker and Jon Pertwee episodes. I caught the new series 2 episodes into David Tennant's first season, because I wasn't even aware it had started again when Chris was in the role, and I've been watching and rewatching ever since.

Tom Baker is still the best Doctor, closely followed by David Tennant and Christopher Eccleston, Jon Pertwee is a close fourth imo...although I don't mind Matt Smith.

I'm more of a David/Tom/Matt/Troughton kind of guy. McGann gets a special mention because he was the only good thing in an otherwise rubbish movie.

Agree with this assessment.

Feel the current incarnation is a little weak and too try-hard-to-be-weird. Eccleston and Tennant seemed to do it all without effort. Baker was just a nutcase (and still is). Just introduced son, who has an obsession with Tennant and Smith, to Baker and he appears to be hooked.

+1
At the time I'm watching Doctor Who I don't tend to care much for the legs of Amelia Pond or the regeneration-distracting clevage of Peri.

I do appreciate the attractiveness though after I've finished watching, its just not important in regards to how good the companion is. (see Donna)

The BBC has confirmed rumours that Doctor Who Series 7 will be split over two years. They will only air six episodes in 2012, the remainder in 2013.

“Six of them will come out this year, including the Christmas special and then eight in the next year,” said Steven Moffat.

It was also announced that Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill will make their final appearance in episode 5.

Moffat revealed: “Amy and Rory will leave in the fifth episode that goes out, and it will be a final encounter with the Weeping Angels.”

Adding: “Not everyone gets out alive. And I mean it this time!”

The Daleks have also been confirmed to appear in the Autumn run.

The new companion, Jenna-Louise Coleman, is currently planned to join in the 2012 Christmas Special.

Hopefully the Daleks are given a good episode this year. I've only enjoy the modern Dalek in "Dalek", "The Big Bang" and "The Wedding of River Song"

Firstly, New series companions Martha Jones is the Bomb.

Peter Davidson (5th Doctor), Tennent, Baker for me. Baker is the one everyone knows and really made Doctor Who what it is today, But I'll take the 5th Doctor over the 4th as he was a Better Doctor, just never got the chance to really make the role his own with Who being put on Hiatus for the majority of his contract with only 12 episodes to his Credit.

But Best companion overall is still Sarah Jane Smith.

Tennant was definitely amazing, even if at times he wasn't given the best scripts to work with. Some scenes written for him, though brilliantly acted, made Ten come across as a bit of an angsty teenagers (at times). I still feel like the whole Rose love interest thing was a slap in the face to all the companions before her as well.

That said it's hard to argue that Tennant is one of the best Doctors. Did brilliantly with everything he was given and made the episodes I disliked watchable (except Love and Monsters. Nothing that ends on a crude blowjob with a concrete slab joke can be improved). I love how he married the person who played The Doctor's Daughter, who is the real life daughter of Davidson, as well. Weird timey-wimey incest going on there.

What with the 6 month or so wait for the new series, I've recently undertaked the challenge of watching the 5 or 6 classic serials I haven't seen yet so I can be able to say I have seen every remaining episode ever made.

The only time I've ever been terrified watching Doctor Who, was watching The Tenth Planet when I was about six. I remember that version of the cybermen were terrifying for me.

I say if you take the best bits from Tennant and the best bits from Matt Smith, you've pretty much got the perfect Doctor.

"recently undertaken", "undertaked"

That episode in 'the library' where the shadows ate peoples flesh was kinda scary too. Not as bad as the angels though.

I didn't like Matt Smith. He has to try too hard to be the character. It just came naturally to David Tennant, and as seen in Harry Potter, he has that slightly deranged streak.

I was expecting far, faaaaar worse from Matt Smith to be honest. He won me over from Fish Custard onwards. He does the whole old man thing well enough for a mid-20 something bloke. Also he's sort of Troughtonish which isn't bad.
