The game is on now. Tsonga was leading 3-2 before the rain interrupted. The game has just resumed.

Bernard Tomic booed off court in ill-tempered Wimbledon loss
BERNARD Tomic has failed to justify his new status as one of the senior boys on the tennis tour, losing to an old schoolboy rival in the first round at Wimbledon.

Tomic went down in four sets to Wimbledon debutante David Goffin, picking up a code violation warning along the way for unsportsmanlike conduct after furiously smashing his racquet when things began to go wrong for him.

The 19-year-old Australian repeated the tantrum by smashing another racquet after his final forehand went wide to seal Goffin’s 3-6 6-3 6-4 6-4 upset victory.

Goffin was anything but intimidated by Tomic’s lofty position as the tournament’s 20th seed, grinding him down with a steady all-court game after Tomic had looked assured in leaping out to an early lead.

The last time Tomic went up against his Belgian rival was at an ITF junior event in Milan in 2008, when a 17-year-old Goffin bullied the stringy 15-year-old Australian 6-2 6-0.
When Tomic broke Goffin’s first service game last night then broke again to take the first set comfortably it appeared that Tomic was heading for an easy win.

Striding with the confidence of a 2011-quarter finalist contesting his 11th Grand Slam, Tomic started out with the patience of a wily veteran while 70th-ranked Goffin seemed uncertain on his Wimbledon debut.

The two men’s careers diverged at last year’s Wimbledon qualifying event, when Goffin was eliminated while Tomic charged into the main draw and all the way to the last eight of the championship.

But Goffin made his own mark three weeks ago with an eye-catching Grand Slam debut in Paris when he squeaked his way into the main draw as a lucky loser from the qualifying rounds and then reached the last 16 to earn his first top-100 ranking.

Goffin was given a wild card to allow him into the main draw here but he had never won a senior-level match on grass and was unable to match Tomic’s poise in the first set.

Tomic’s rise to a world ranking of 28 owes much to his remarkable ability to dictate the pace and intensity of a match and it took Goffin some time to find his balance on the Wimbledon grass.

The Belgian turned things around by breaking Tomic’s service at the start of the second set, using an all-court game and tenacious chasing to cope with Tomic’s mix of slice, drop shots and the occasional crisp winner.

The Australian’s lack of a consistently powerful serve gave Goffin his opening, and the second set looked more like a tenacious contest on the clay of Roland Garros, with a strong of lengthy rallies, hard-fought games and multiple deuces rather than any fast-and-short grass court exchanges.

Tomic broke back quickly in the second set but then was on the defensive for the remainder of the set, saving four break points in a hard-fought fourth game before being broken again to trail 2-4.

Goffin sealed the set with the most powerful serving game that either produced in the match, not allowing Tomic to get a single shot back into play in a display of big-moment temperament that suggests Goffin has a solid future in the game.

Goffin broke against at the start of the third set, promoting Tomic’s show of petulance.

Three successive umpiring errors saw winners by Tomic initially called out and then turned into replay pounts and the Australian was angry that the erros were negating his winners.

When Goffin used one of those second-chances to break Tomic’s serve for the third time in five games to wrap up the second set, Tomic responded by whacking his racquet four times into the court, destroying it and earning his warning for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Goffin broke again at the start of each of the next two sets, successfully relying on pugnacious groundstrokes to blunt Tomic’s dangerous mix of chips, and top spin.

The loss is likely to knock Tomic out of the top 30 and came as Matthew Ebden lost 6-1 6-3 6-7 (1-7) 6-3 to unfaniced Frenchman Benoit Paire.
Earlier, Marinko Matosevic, Australia’s second-highest ranked male at 72 in the world, complained that a cold or flu had him feeling dreadful during his lacklustre and erratic effort against Belgian veteran Xavier Malisse, who had little trouble dismissing him 6-2 6-2 7-5.

The last Australian man in the field, Lleyton Hewitt was due to follow Tomic onto court for a tough clash with world No.5 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
