Gary Phillips had a stint with the Matildas or coaching staff for a while, didn't he? Or was that coaching a team in the W-League?
I remember he was head coach of Sydney Olympic for a season or two in the latter NSL era - he may've even been the coach in charge who took them to a semi-final or even GF against Glory, if memory serves correct? He was amongst a number of younger, newer to the job coaches about the NSL back then - this was the early 00s.
He's actually one of the few coaches from that latter era not to get a gig in the A-League, he and former Socceroo Mike Petersen, who was coach of South Melbourne a short while to some success in the late 90s. There's probably another unlucky coach or two from that latter NSL era to not get an A-League gig, aswell.
Guys like De Marigny, Ange, Nick Theo', Dave Mitchell, Lawrie McKinna, Branko Culina, Frank Farina, Stu Monro (Assist at Glory now), Ian Ferguson (Senior player then young coach assist at Northern Spirit back in the day, iirc), John Kosmina and perhaps 1-2 others are all who coached in the latter era of the NSL and made the transition, got jobs, in the A-League.
Nick Theo' had alot of success in the latter NSL era, with Wollongong Wolves back in the day when Chippers, Paul Reid, Sasho Petrovski and others were there and with Parra Power and Syd Olympic, if memory serves correct. But perhaps he had most unlucky spell in the A-League - only one brief shot with Newcastle Jets, which didn't last due partly due to falling out with playing staff. Nick Theo' was regarded as one of our most promising/prominent coaches in that latter NSL era and like Ange went to coach in Greece's league short while. While guys like Bleiberg, Culina and Kossie get multiple A-League gigs, Theo only got the one - have no idea why - maybe like some others from the NSL-era he just turned to other things?
But anyway, as to style - I can't remember much and was a newer fan to the game back then. But Phillips seemed to be regarded amongst the batch of promising young coaches coming up then. Sydney Olympic were an attacking team back then and always challenging Glory, Wollongong and South Melb for the NSL title - one season or two they were league leaders and had the likes of Ante Milicic leading the league in scoring - he scored a goal or two against Glory in that GF too. Looking at Phillips' Wiki now, he's now 49 and spent a season coaching in Malaysia's league just a year or so ago. Nothing in his wiki about coaching in the W-League or with Matildas - I may've got confused there or his wiki lacks detail - there's a gap in detail between his NSL gig and Malaysia, I doubt he was sitting on his hands doing nothing those 6 years, lol:
