Football Federation Australia (FFA) has released the draw for the Westfield W-League 2013/14 Season with the opening round to be played on the weekend of the 9/10 November 2013.

For the full fixture schedule please visit www.w-league.com.au.

Following on from last season’s revamped format, the Westfield W-League 2013/14 season will again be played over 12 rounds with the top four teams advancing to the Westfield W-League 2014 Finals Series, which will be played over two weekends. The Westfield W-League 2014 Grand Final will be played on Sunday 23 February 2014.

The Head of Westfield W-League, Damien de Bohun, said today he’s delighted that Australia’s premier women’s football competition will feature not only Australia’s best female footballers, but also some of the best players from around the world.

“Over the past five Westfield W-League seasons we have seen the competition grow from strength to strength showcasing the best female footballers from Australia and also featuring players from 14 other countries around the world so far,” said De Bohun.

“This trend is set to continue and we are genuinely excited about the calibre of players and standard of football on offer for this coming season.

De Bohun predicted that the 2013/14 Westfield W-League draw would produce another season of great football entertainment.

“Last season’s epic Westfield W-League Grand Final at AAMI Park which saw Sydney FC defeat Melbourne Victory was a fantastic showcase of the competition,” said de Bohun.

“The new season draw has been developed in consultation with the clubs and we believe it’s fair and equitable within all the variables we have been dealing with.”

De Bohun said that Melbourne Victory is currently in the final stages of negotiations regarding venues for the season and a decision would be made soon.

A formal announcement regarding ABC TV’s broadcast of the Westfield W-League is expected shortly.

W-League: Squad poised for success

Wednesday, 30 October 2013 11:56 AM

Star signings, four Matildas, a new captain, four live televised matches on ABC TV and a family of corporate partners.

Football Federation Victoria (FFV) today launched Melbourne Victory’s 2013/2014 Westfield W-League campaign at AAMI Park with several exciting announcements on and off the field.

For the first time since the 2009/2010 W-League season, Melbourne Victory will don not one but six corporate partners on its squad uniforms.

Jetts Fitness and Banking on Football will feature on the front and back of the jersey respectively as major partners, with Pro Sports Group and Match Attax Trading Card Game taking up positions on the shorts.

PhotobookShop will own the off-field collar position, while the Reagan Milstein Foundation will appear on the sleeve of the playing jersey.

FFV CEO Mitchell Murphy said the new partnerships were a testament to the rapid growth of women’s football in Australia.

“Female participation remains the fastest growing sector in football and a thriving W-League competition and the success of the Westfield Matildas in recent years have not gone unnoticed,” Murphy said.

“With a terrific coach and some strong additions to an already talented squad, this excitement has now been met with unprecedented off-field support from the corporate sector,” Murphy said.

As Australia’s favourite fitness chain, Jetts Fitness operates 37 fitness clubs in Victoria and 200 across Australia and New Zealand. It will provide a significant financial investment in the squad and personal support to the players and coaching staff by providing them with free 12-month memberships.

“Jetts Fitness is thrilled to join the Victorian football family as partners of both Football Federation Victoria and the Melbourne Victory W-League squad,” Jetts Fitness Business Performance Manager of Victoria Tim O’Shea said.

“With customer friendly policies including no contracts, 24/7 access and low membership fees, we look forward to providing a valuable contribution to both the squad and the Victorian football community including clubs, their members and all supporters of this great game.”

Banking on Football allows football fans to do all their banking with someone who shares their passion for football and provides members with the opportunity to support the Melbourne Victory W-League team and their local grassroots club via the Cash 4 Clubs program.

"Banking on Football is delighted to be partnering with FFV and the Melbourne Victory W-League side,” Banking on Football CEO Margot Sweeney said.

“The people of Victoria are arguably the most passionate football supporters in the country and we can't wait to engage with them at the grassroots level via our arrangement with FFV.”

After losing last season’s Westfield W-League Grand Final, Melbourne Victory has signalled its determination to go one step further this season with some key signings and the retention of several stars.

Matildas young gun Stephanie Catley will captain the team for the first time, while the arrival of fellow Matilda and former Perth Glory striker Lisa De Vanna - who is rated as one of Australia’s supreme talents - will add firepower to the Victory’s attack.

De Vanna has scored 26 goals from 75 appearances with the Matildas and joins fellow national team players Catley, Ashley Brown and Brianna Davey in the 20-player squad, with last season’s Welsh revelation Jessica Fishlock committing to another season.

Talented central defender Emma Checker and midfielder Alex Natoli have joined from Adelaide United, while head coach David Edmondson has rewarded promising Victorian teenagers Beattie Goad and Emily Hulbert with their first Melbourne Victory contracts.

Swede Jessica Samuelsson and New Zealander Katie Hoyle are the Victory’s two international signings.

Edmondson said he was delighted with his squad and its preparation as it prepares to secure a maiden W-League title.

“We have a great balance of local, interstate and international players, which is pleasing,” Edmondson said.

“To have four Matildas players representing Melbourne Victory this season is a huge bonus for us.

“The experience they have gained on the international stage will no doubt hold them and the rest of the squad in good stead, particularly for new captain Steph Catley who shows all the attributes to be an outstanding leader.

“Training has been fantastic and the girls can’t wait to kick off the season in a grand final rematch against Sydney next week.”

Melbourne Victory will take on the Women’s Premier League All Stars of Victoria in a friendly match at 2pm on Saturday at John Cain Memorial Park.

Victory women aim to step up

October 31, 2013

Michael Lynch
Senior sports reporter with The Age

Melbourne Victory's women's team is banking on new signings and increased corporate sponsorship to give it the on- and off-field muscle to go one better in this season's W-League following its grand final loss to Sydney last season.

Victory will have a new captain in youthful Matilda Stephanie Catley, while its attacking stocks will be boosted by the recruitment of Lisa De Vanna, one of Australia's most experienced and effective strikers.

The Perth-born forward has scored 26 goals in 75 appearances with the Matildas and is one of four national team players - Catley, Ashley Brown and Brianna Davey - in Victory's 20-player squad.

Welsh import Jessica Fishlock is also backing up for another season.

Football Federation Victoria chief executive Mitchell Murphy points to the fact the club now has six corporate sponsors as a healthy indicator of growth in interest in the women's game.

"Female participation remains the fastest-growing sector in football and a thriving W-League competition, and the success of the Matildas in recent years have not gone unnoticed," he said.

Victory coach David Edmondson believes the club's depth makes it a real championship contender this season.

"We have a great balance of local, interstate and international players,'' he said. ''To have four Matildas players representing Melbourne Victory this season is a huge bonus for us.

"The experience they have gained on the international stage will no doubt hold them and the rest of the squad in good stead, particularly for new captain Steph Catley, who shows all the attributes to be an outstanding leader.''

Melbourne Victory plays the Women's Premier League All-Stars of Victoria in a match on Saturday at John Cain Memorial Park.

FFA Westfield W-League kicks off

Monday, 4 November 2013 11:00 AM

Season six of the Westfield W-League was launched today with the upcoming season to be marked by increased television coverage and the addition of further high-quality international players.

Representatives of all eight clubs - Adelaide United, Brisbane Roar, Canberra United, Melbourne Victory, Newcastle Jets, Perth Glory, Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers – were on hand in Sydney today ahead of this weekend’s opening round.

ABC TV will again continue to broadcast the Westfield W-League as they have done since the competition’s inception, with live matches returning to Australian screens each Sunday at 3pm.

For the first time Fox Sports will also broadcast two Westfield W-League matches during the season. These matches will be part of W-League / A-League doubleheaders, another feature of the new season.

Last season was widely credited as the best playing standard yet seen in the Westfield W-League, and the coming campaign will be complemented by the arrival of several star international recruits.

Leading the way is reigning European Player of the Year and FIFA Women’s World Cup-winner Nadine Angerer. The Germany goalkeeper, who is also a nominee for the upcoming FIFA World Player of the year Award, will don the gloves for Brisbane Roar.

USA midfielder Lori Lindsey, another former World Cup participant, will sport the green of Canberra alongside fellow American imports Stephanie Ochs and Kendall Fletcher.

Perth Glory, meanwhile, have been boosted by Canada World Cup striker Christina Julien among others.

Star players from the Westfield Matildas will also again be a focal point with Lisa De Vanna (Melbourne Victory), Melissa Barbieri (Adelaide United) and Emily van Egmond (Western Sydney Wanderers) among the headline moves.

So too, much interest will focus on the return of several national team players from long-term injury, including Lydia Williams (Canberra United), Ash Brown (Melbourne Victory) and Leena Khamis (Sydney FC), as the Westfield Matildas cast one eye towards next year’s AFC Asian Cup, which doubles as World Cup qualifying.

FFA CEO David Gallop said the Westfield W-League season is a crucial part of football’s strategic objective to become the biggest and most popular sport in Australia.

“Football is a game for women just as much as it is for men,” said Gallop. “It’s our clear point of difference against all the other footy brands in this country. No other brand of footy can provide their female players with the opportunities that come from playing football, at the elite level or the grassroots.

“The W-League is skilful, athletic and entertaining. I have no doubt the competition is entering an exciting period of growth with the live TV coverage from ABC and Fox Sports.”

ABC TV will again cover the ‘match of the week’ live and exclusive on ABC1 throughout the 14 week competition that includes the Westfield W-League Finals Series.

"The ABC are delighted to be broadcasting the W-League live this season and to be broadcasting matches live in the family friendly 3.00pm timeslot on Sunday afternoons," said ABC head of Sport and Events, Justin Holdforth.

"The massive success of the A-League shows Australians have really taken to football and we look forward to this success flowing to the W-League"

Fox Sports will also broadcast the following two Westfield W-League matches as they form part of Hyundai A-League/Westfield W-League double headers:
•   Sunday 15 December, Sydney FC v Melbourne Victory 2.15pm, Allianz Stadium
•   Friday 24 January: Brisbane Roar v Western Sydney Wanderers, 4pm, Suncorp Stadium

The Westfield W-League action kicks off this weekend with a series of epic first round match-ups.

The highlight is a Grand Final rematch between Melbourne Victory and Sydney FC at Melbourne’s Lakeside Stadium, which will also be the televised match for the opening round.

The round also has two former champions going head-to-head as Canberra United visit Brisbane Roar at their AJ Kelly Fields. Western Sydney Wanderers are looking for a big crowd at Marconi Stadium when they host Adelaide United, while Perth Glory make the long trip to Newcastle Jets and Wanderers Oval.

The season will conclude with the Grand Final on Sunday 23 February.

Garriock Announced as Wanderers Captain

Tuesday, 5 November 2013 1:52 PM

Western Sydney Wanderers Westfield W-League coach Steve Roche has named Heather Garriock as the Club Captain for the 2013/14 season.

One of Australia’s most decorated players, Garriock will wear the Captain’s armband in her first season playing with the Wanderers.

“It’s a massive honour to captain the Wanderers in my first season playing for the Club,” said Garriock.

“Being the captain of any side is a big honour and to do it with the Wanderers I’m very, very flattered.”

Boasting over 100 caps for the Matildas, Garriock was born and raised in Western Sydney and believes she is a perfect fit for the club.

“I grew up in Campbelltown, spent most of my life living there and I’m very proud to be from Western Sydney,” continued Garriock.

“I always get stick about it in the National Team but it’s where I’m from, where I grew up and it’s made me the player I am.

“Growing up around here we didn’t get given things on a platter, you need to work hard and fight for your position – I’m really glad to be playing for Western Sydney.”

With this being her first season back since having a child, Garriock believes that her life experiences in her year away from football will make her a valuable asset to the Club and to her new teammates.

“My perspective on football has changed since having a family recently, I’m calmer than I used to be and know I’m a role model to the younger girls,” said Garriock.

“People think being captain is a big job whereas if you incorporate the rest of the players and get them to help you lead that’s the most important thing rather than putting the onus on one or two people.

“It’s about the team first and foremost – one of my attributes is I’m a winner and I lead by example with my work ethic and the girls respond to that.”

Having recruited well while retaining key players, the Wanderers squad is strong and Garriock believes the team will be pushing for the title.

“The ultimate goal is to win the Premiership; that’s everyone’s goal.

“Our first step is the game on the weekend. If we achieve our short term goals, the confidence will build and with the side we have we’ll kick-on from there.

“Our pre-season has been excellent with the support staff at the Wanderers and I’m just looking forward to going out there and playing after all this hard work so far.”

The Western Sydney Wanderers kick-off their Westfield W-League 2013/14 season against Adelaide United on Sunday 10 November at Marconi Stadium. Kick-off is 2pm followed the Foxtel National Youth League team playing Brisbane Roar at 4:10pm.

Members receive free entry with non-members $10 and $5 concession. Tickets are available from Club Marconi and at the gate.

Jets Girls ready to kick off season

Friday, 8 November 2013 12:03 PM

The Newcastle Jets W-League side will fly the flag locally whilst their male counterparts tackle Adelaide away with the girls hoping hometown support will get them over the line in their season opener.

The fresh look, young Jets side will take on Perth at Wanderers Oval on Saturday, with the match kicking off at 3pm.

“We'd definitely love to get three points on the board from the get go,' Jets Captain, Gema Simon said.

“The girls are excited about getting our season underway and we'll be hoping that we get a good crowd to push us even harder against Perth.”

The youthful Jets side is not overawed by the visitors, whose ranks include Matilda and former Jets player, Katie Gill, as well as Canadian World Cup striker, Christina Julien.

“We have an enthusiastic young side, that is filled with local talent and I know from training that they are not intimidated by Perth and will take the game to them,” Coach Peter McGuinness said.

“The girls have trained well and have been looking forward to tomorrow's clash. I'm confident they will put in a good show and be eager to come away with a win,” McGuinness concluded.

The Jets women will play six home games this season, five at Wanderers Oval with the remaining match to be played at Adamstown Oval.

W-League: Emily Van Egmond ready to step out from Gary Van Egmond's shadow

Date
November 9, 2013

Michael Chammas

To some she is still Gary's daughter, but having found a home at the Western Sydney Wanderers, Emily Van Egmond is hoping to step out of her father's shadow.

The new Wanderers midfielder, who will make her debut for Western Sydney in Sunday's opening round W-League clash against Adelaide United at Marconi Stadium, joins the club from the Newcastle Jets, where her father coaches the A-League side.

But the 20-year-old Matildas representative, who has been touted as a future Australian captain, admits she has been trying to break out and create an image of her own.

''Dad being the head coach of the Newcastle Jets, you're always going to get questions about that,'' she said. ''But over the last couple of years, I've tried to create a profile around myself as an individual and the success I've had.

''I don't mind it because it's a good thing to be seen as his daughter as well. He's achieved a lot in the A-League and in football in general.''

In their debut season, the Wanderers missed out on the finals after finishing the regular season in sixth position with four wins, seven losses and one draw.

However, coach Stephen Roche has lured many new faces for the club's second season, including Matildas veteran Heather Garriock, David Carney's sister Michelle Carney, Canberra United's Caitlin Cooper and American Tori Huster.

Matildas representative Alanna Kennedy and goalkeeper Dimi Poulos have also joined the Wanderers from cross-town rivals Sydney FC.

''We are definitely a big chance of playing in the finals with the team we have,'' Van Egmond said. ''We are well and truly competitive enough to reach the finals and then anything can happen from there. On a personal level, I just want to have a really good W-League season under my belt.

''There are also some very good young players coming through. If I look at the talent coming through here at the Wanderers compared to Newcastle, it's worlds apart in terms of the younger players. It's an exciting time to be here.''

While the men's team has taken the A-League by storm after its incredible debut season, the Wanderers' parochial fan base extended their support to the women's team last year.

Van Egmond has played in domestic competitions in Denmark and the US but rates the Wanderers' supporters as the pick of the bunch.

''The club is huge and they've done so well in a short time,'' she said. ''There's an unbelievable support base here, and I've honestly seen nothing like it. I'm just so excited to get started. I think the RBB [red and black bloc] are going to be coming to a few games. For something like that to happen in women's football, it just makes us feel so proud. It does bring a massive smile to my face because we don't get that support base that the men's teams do.

''When we get people like that coming to our games, it really lifts the squad. I haven't been to a Wanderers A-League game but I've heard it's a crazy environment, so I can't wait to see what it's like.''

Pressure off rebuilt Canberra

November 9, 2013

Lee Gaskin
Sports reporter at The Canberra Times

They've brought back Australia's premier goalkeeper and recruited a trio of US internationals.

But new Canberra United coach Liesbeth Migchelsen does not want to burden her revamped squad with the pressure of contending for the W-League championship.

United begins its quest to collect the club's second national title when it opens the season against the Brisbane Roar at AJ Kelly Fields on Saturday.

The 2011-12 champion is desperate to rebound from last season's disappointment of missing the finals altogether.

Headlining a raft of changes is the return of Matildas custodian Lydia Williams, the signing of American stars Lori Lindsey, Kendall Fletcher and Stephanie Ochs and the appointment of former Dutch captain Migchelsen to replace outgoing coach Jitka Klimkova.

While making the top four is the aim, Migchelsen wants to assess how her squad performs before setting targets.

''Our aim with this squad is to reach first of all the play-offs, but of course everyone wants to play for the championship,'' Migchelsen said. ''We want to as well, but sometimes you need to be realistic.

''We will see what the league brings then we can say are we good enough to be the champion.

''In the first few weeks we'll see where we stand as a team before we can say if we can be the new champion of the W-League, but I don't want any pressure on this young team.''

United will start the season without key midfielder Sally Shipard, who is expected to return from a knee injury in December.

Young Matildas international Georgia Yeoman-Dale (illness) and Holly Houston (hamstring injury) have also missed the trip to Queensland.

Williams is one of the most important additions. The 25-year-old was the centrepiece of United's defence in the club's first four seasons before she missed the last campaign recovering from a knee reconstruction. Williams made her comeback with Swedish club Pitea IF and has also reclaimed her place in the national team.

United vice-captain Ellie Brush, who has played most of her games with Williams in the team, said her impact could not be overstated.

''Having Lydia back is huge for us and it's probably been a bit under-exaggerated how important she is for us,'' Brush said. ''She'll add a lot to our team, and the three US players we've got will be a huge coup. The people of Canberra will be very excited to see what they have to show in home games.''

It will also be the first game in charge for new captain Nicole Sykes. The 21-year-old left-back will become the second player in the club's history, behind Brush, to bring up her 50th cap after making her debut in 2008 as a 16-year-old.

Sykes believes this year's squad is close to the strongest she's been a part of in six seasons.

''With the internationals we've got [it is], but there's also a massive amount of young players coming through,'' Sykes said. ''Players like Jenny [Bissett], Ash [Sykes], Grace Gill, they've made massive leaps.''

Sydney FC sets standard in opening round of W-League

Updated 1 hour 56 minutes ago

MAP: Sydney 2000
Champions Sydney FC set the bar high in the opening week of the W-League season, overpowering Melbourne Victory 5-1 in a clash of last season's grand finalists.

Sydney fell behind in the opening minutes of Sunday's match but it was one-way traffic thereafter against a Victory team which recruited strongly during the off-season.

One of those recruits, Emma Checker, opened the scoring for hosts Victory, but Sydney hit the front by the midway point of the first half and never looked back.

Nicola Bolger led the way for the Sky Blues with two goals while the others came from Jodie Taylor, Emma Kete and former Matildas striker Leena Khamis, returning after a year's absence from injury.

It could have been even worse for Melbourne as Taylor had a goal ruled out for offside and Amy Harrison was only denied by the frame of the goal.

Canberra United also shone in the opening round with an eye-catching 3-0 away win against a star-studded Brisbane Roar.

The Roar's marquee recruit, Germany captain and goalkeeper Nadine Angerer, was powerless to halt the visitors who were three goals to the good by the 50-minute mark.

American international Lori Lindsey put Canberra ahead early, and former golden boot winner Michelle Heyman rediscovered her goalscoring form with a double against the two-time champions.

Outsiders Adelaide United were denied a famous win as Catherine Cannuli equalised during injury time for Western Sydney Wanderers in a 1-1 draw in Sydney.

Adelaide, who have collected the wooden spoon in each of the past three seasons, went ahead through debutant Alexandra Gummer and their robust approach only narrowly failed to pay full dividends.

Perth Glory took all three points from Newcastle Jets with a 5-2 win, though they were pushed hard by a team expected to struggle this season.

The Jets twice fought back to be 2-2 at the interval before late goals blew out the scoreline in a physical contest.

SFC unfortunately net a winner in the 95th minute to defeat AUFC 1-2. First goal deflected in, 2nd goal a result of pure Fergie time from a referee who is trying to be as good as Ben Williams.

Absolutely dominated large swathes of the second half and if only Quigley could run would have certainly been leading, first half had SFC in ascension thanks to some overawe by our girls and some shocking refereeing.

Home>Newcastle Jets
De Vanna's treble sinks Jets

25 January 2014-SBS: Mark Fowler, Newcastle

A Lisa De Vanna hat-trick helped Melbourne Victory to a 4-1 win over Newcastle Jets in round 10 of the W-League at Adamstown Oval.

De Vanna netted after 12 minutes to put her side ahead, then scored two quickfire goals in the 54th and 56th minutes to make it 3-0.

Stephanie Catley added a fourth a minute later to make it three goals in four minutes against a shell-shocked Newcastle Jets side, which hit back with a looping header from Rhali Dobson with 16 minutes remaining.

The win keeps Melbourne in second place behind leader Sydney FC on goal difference, while Newcastle slumped to its 10th defeat in as many games to remain at the foot of the ladder.

Victory coach David Edmondson - who will head overseas late February to coach Bristol Academy in England's WSL - was less than impressed with his team's first-half performance, but pleased with the way it came back in the second half.

Saying he thought his side was 'a yard off' the pace in the first half, but also that the home side had 'played very well', Edmondson added: "I take a bit of blame for it (the poor start).

"(I told the players) there was no pressure today as we've made the top four now and we can come and enjoy our football and just relax and play. Maybe they took that a little bit too literally.

"But the second half we came back a lot better - the ball speed was up a bit and the decision-making was a bit quicker so that was good."

Things started badly for the home side when Ashley Spina, who had been named as a substitute, was unable to take her place on the bench and had to be replaced at the last minute by Lauren Brown.

But when the game did get underway Newcastle had the first opportunity, Tara Andrews racing into the area only to prod wide under pressure from the opposition defence and Victory goalkeeper Brianne Davey, although the incident left the home fans shouting for a penalty.

De Vanna fired an early warning at the other end as she streaked away down the left, seeing a shot blocked, before Caitlin Friend fired an effort in from the edge of the area which was well dealt with by Eliza Campbell.

The opening goal soon followed however, with Gulcan Koca's crossfield ball finding De Vanna and she again raced away before expertly clipping the ball past Campbell.

Down by a goal the last thing Newcastle needed was an early injury, but that was the case with Sophie Nenadovic forced off to be replaced by Stacey Day. That forced a reshuffle in the Jets line-up, with Day going up front and Dobson dropping back into the left-hand side of midfield.

Just after the hour mark Friend was again denied by Campbell, but at the other end Andrews nearly got free only to see her shot deflected wide.

Two minutes after the break Friend was again foiled by the impressive Campbell, but on 54 minutes De Vanna grabbed her second to start a goal rush.

Once again the Matildas star raced away down the left, before placing a shot - which seemed to skew off the side of her foot - past Campbell.

If there was any doubt as to De Vanna's finish for that goal there was none with her hat-trick effort two minutes later, as she brilliantly smacked home a half-volley after getting on the end of a crossfield ball.

Beatrice Goad then came on for Melbourne in place of Koca, and within seconds it was 4-0 with the impressive Catley getting forward from left-back to add her name to the scoresheet.

Newcastle then enjoyed its best spell of pressure, with Victory's Jessica Samuelsson forced into a rash challenge on the edge of her penalty area which saw her pick up a yellow card.

From the free-kick which followed Day saw her effort well saved by Davey, and from the resulting corner the ball came out to Gema Simon whose fine shot thumped against the crossbar.

Victory hit back with De Vanna setting up a chance for all-action midfielder Jessica Fishlock, whose shot was saved by Campbell, but Newcastle went up the other end and got the goal the majority of the 444 crowd had come to see with Dobson getting on the end of a free-kick to loop home a header.

Apart from a lengthy delay for treatment to the assistant referee, who was eventually carried off on a stretcher to receive treatment, the game petered out with De Vanna's hat-trick ensuring Melbourne’s impressive season continues - and that the 29-year-old will go into the last few games of the regular season and the finals series full of confidence.

"The last two or three games she (De Vanna) has been fantastic - her work-rate has been great and she has created chances for herself but just not finished," said Edmondson, who was also pleased with defender Lauren Barnes who barely put a foot wrong on her debut after signing as a guest player from Seattle Reign FC in the NWSL.

Home>Perth Glory
W-League: Canberra grabs spot in finals

27 January 2014-AAP

Canberra United snared the final ticket on offer to the W-League play-offs with a thumping 5-1 victory over Perth Glory.

The team from the nation's capital was unconvincing for lengthy periods against the erratic Glory, despite holding a two-goal margin thanks to first-half strikes from Ellie Brush and Caitlin Munoz.

A late flourish from Canberra blew out the scoreline with Georgia Yeoman-Dale scoring two quick goals as United fell one short of a club-record goal tally.

"We wanted to set ourselves up for the finals and this win today did it nicely so this result is very important for us," said Munoz.

"We are gelling together well at the right part of the season."

Despite two rounds of the season still remaining, Canberra's win confirmed the semi-final line-up with Sydney FC, Melbourne Victory and Brisbane Roar holding down the top-three positions.

Matildas star Lisa De Vanna turned in another virtuoso performance by netting a hat-trick and setting up another for Steph Catley as Melbourne Victory returned to form to score a 4-1 triumph at the expense of Newcastle Jets.

After losing top spot to Sydney FC last weekend, albeit only on goal difference, Victory overwhelmed the winless Jets on Saturday, racing to a four-goal lead inside the hour mark before Rhali Dobson collected a consolation for the home side.

Sydney FC continues to hold off Victory at the summit but it took a last-gasp winner to end the challenge of competition surprise-packet Adelaide United.

Teenage fullback Amy Harrison was the unlikely source of the pivotal goal five minutes into injury-time after Adelaide's Kristy Moore had earlier cancelled out the opener by the league's top goalscorer Jodie Taylor.

Brisbane Roar recovered from its club record 4-0 loss against Sydney FC to return to the winner's circle in holding off a strong challenge from Western Sydney Wanderers 3-2.

The ever-dangerous Tameka Butt provided a moment of inspiration with seven minutes remaining to find the winner after the teams had shared four first-half goals.

Victory sign De Vanna for title defence

Wednesday, September 03, 2014 - 12:17 PM
Source: AAP
Author: Ben McKay

Melbourne Victory will begin their W-League championship defence with Matildas legend Lisa De Vanna back in their ranks.

With a new coach and new internationals in the Victory line-up, De Vanna's re-signing is welcome news.

Joe Montemurro, appointed as coach after David Edmonson took a position in the UK following last year's triumph, said the striker's return was important for the club's ambitions.

"Lisa is one of the most decorated players in Australian football," he said.

"We're happy to have her, not only as a player but as a character, she's a great addition."

De Vanna was nominated for the FIFA goal of the year last season and led Victory's scoring charts with eight.

She'll be joined by returning US international Lauren Barnes and countrywomen Christine Nairn and Elli Reed.

Captain Steph Catley, fresh from a stint in the US league, said the W-League had improved out of sight.

"The W-League is growing and growing every single year," she said.

"When I first came in the standard just wasn't there ... now there's lots of internationals who want to come and play here."

The Victory have also signed Newcastle Jets captain and Australian international Hannah Brewer for their campaign, which includes the 2014 International Women's Club Championship in Japan in December.

No club has defended a grand final win in the W-League's six-season history but Catley is keen to change that.

"It was massive for us to win the championship last year ... and the ambition is to go back to back."

Sydney Derby breaks W-League record

Sunday, 28 September 2014 -
@wswanderersfc

The Western Sydney Wanderers broke a long-standing Westfield W-League record on Saturday as the largest ever crowd for a regular season match filed through the turnstiles at Marconi Stadium for the Sydney Derby.

3,084 fans, the majority glad in Red & Black, created one of the most memorable atmospheres ever seen at a top-flight women’s match in Australia with both the RBB and Cove in attendance.

In what was another great sign for the growing strength of women’s football in Western Sydney, Marconi Stadium was rocking as players from both sides responded in kind on the pitch with one of the games of the season (read about the match here).

With the Wanderers continuing their mission to unearth and develop young Western Sydney talent this year’s new squad have performed extremely well in a tough opening to the season that has seen them play last season’s top three teams in the first three rounds.

A predominantly young team, built with the best upcoming talent from across the region, is complemented with USA league winning captain Keelin Winters, former Liverpool striker Hannah Beard and Matilda Caitlin Cooper.

The Red & Black lace-up against top-of-the-table Perth Glory this Sunday 5 October at Marconi Stadium with kick-off at 3pm.

In another Westfield W-League first, tickets to this match [and all our home matches at Marconi Stadium] are available to pre-purchase right now through Ticketmaster.

Members can download their free ticket by logging-in to their MyWanderers account with prices for the general public starting at $5 for junior, $7 for concession and $12 for adults.

Melbourne Victory take down Canberra United 4-2 in W-League clash

DateSeptember 28, 2014 - 7:43PM

David Polkinghorne

Canberra United coach Elisabeth Migchelsen says the team incorrectly had a penalty awarded against it but added that the Green Machine was its own worst enemy in its biggest ever home defeat.

United struggled to find its rhythm against the Melbourne Victory for most of its 4-2 loss at McKellar Park on Sunday, which eclipsed its previous biggest home defeat of 2-1.

After an uninspiring start, when both teams struggled to string passes together, things started to go wrong for United after Lauren Barnes calmly converted a Victory penalty in the 38th minute.

There was contact between United defender Grace Field's and Christine Nairn's legs, but the question was whether there was sufficient force to knock Nairn down or whether the Victory midfielder went down easily.

But Migchelsen said sloppy defending and poor finishing were the reasons for the loss.

Four minutes after the penalty, Melbourne doubled its lead in an almost comical fashion.

Victory forward Lisa De Vanna wove down the left, before a deft pass found Stephanie Catley.

Her shot should have been saved by United keeper Chantel Jones, but she fumbled and then her captain Nicole Begg was unable to clear the ball off the line.

The second half started the way the first ended, with Victory extending its lead when De Vanna caught United on the break and her lob left Jones stranded to make it 3-0.

That sparked United briefly into life.

Lori Lindsey produced a stunning free kick from out on the left wing, curling it over Victory stopper Brianna Davey into the top corner.

United striker Michelle Heyman then rounded Davey, but her touch was heavy and she couldn't convert.

"We did it to ourselves, we didn't put our chances away. If I look at the first half they didn't have any chances at all," she said.

"It wasn't a penalty, that's one thing for sure, and then we conceded the second goal straightaway.

"Then you go out for the second half and straightaway another goal against us and that changed the whole game.

"We make some changes ... [and] we score a goal and if Heyman in the one-v-one scores, then it's 3-2 and another game.

"If you're not clinical enough and finishing your chances, then you don't win the game, that's football."

Canberra's end came when the defence was caught ball watching and Gema Simon pounced to put the game out of reach.

United midfielder Caitlin Munoz slammed home the rebound after Heyman's header was cleared off the line with 10 minutes remaining, but the damage had been done.

United plays Brisbane Roar at McKellar on Saturday.

De Vanna is like the Markovski or Bouzanis of the W-league, the mercenary that has heaps of teams and is always off to the highest bidder.
It must mean Victory w-league team are cashed up.
