McGowan starting against Pohang

By now, American Samoa must have realised that Australias 22-0 win over Tonga two days earlier was no fluke.

Yeah agreed, except Chippers wasn't that great, highly overrated.

Yeah agreed. We haven't had a good left back since Lazaridis

Nah Chippers was a star. I recall Lazaridis being out injured for a while and we had a massive hole at left back, we had no ready made replacement. So they put Chippers there willy nilly a bona fide attacking player and he made it his own and held it down for years. Not as good as Laza going forwards but defensively he was a rock.

I thought he was outstanding for us in the 2006 World Cup. Most of our guys did a great job, but he sure did.

Easily MOTM against Italy. Just enormous.

Paid his own way over here to play in the Oceania Nations Cup and people on here wanna slag him off because he speaks a few home truths about the A-league.
No, because he was often out if position and gave away a ton of free kicks. Watch the Uruguay game, he gave Recoba almost a dozen free kicks out on the left.

He turned into a bitter old twat much later.

Maybe he didn't peak against Uruguay. But he was outstanding for us in the World Cup. I guess it took him time to adjust, but the point is that he hit his straps at the World Cup. That's what you want.

I don't think he is bitter. Some people with inferiority complexes get their knickers in a twist when somebody points out the bleeding obvious about football in Australia.

CSL in FIFA 15 confirmed!

For Aussies playing overseas in general I use

http://www.ozfootball.net/ark/Abroad/index.shtml

For the CSL it has 6 players including Ibini.

For New Zealand and just squads in general I think transfermarkt and Soccerway are normally pretty good with squads and nationalities but both Euro based so the CSL not a huge focus.

Been kind of itching to ask - no articles on it for a little while, understandably, and looking it up there still 'a little' time between now and the May 13 deadline for the 30-player preliminary WC squad (Trimmed to 23, June 2)...

How is Rhys Williams going - we wonder if he can still sneak in or his chances are well and truly over? There have been warnings over rushing back, but his 'boro coach said he a chance to feature before the season is out...

Could Ange select him in the 30 and give him that extra time/leeway to see how he goes before the final squad June 2nd?

I read some info about Hyuga Tanner from Blackburn has represented the Joeys and he's already playing for Blackburn's under 21 team and he's only 16. They must regard him quite highly over there if he's playing with guys 4 or 5 years older than him. He also being courted by Premier League clubs to be part of there youth set-ups, but i think he's better off at Blackburn he counties to develop well he might be a first teamer sooner rather than later.

Very interesting to see what happens with him in the next few years, who knows if he starts to play first team football he might be a bolter for 2018 in Russia.

Also there is another one I've research called Jake Brimmer and he's at Liverpool playing for there under 18s and he's only 15 i think.

He wore the number 10 jersey in the tour Liverpool was in the youth tournament in January. I assuming they playing him as No.10 literally or as a central midfielder, regardless i heard about him in the NTC Challenge representing Victoria apparently was named in the all star or something what ever its called.
He also has represented the Joeys last year at the AFC Under 16 Qualies and as captain too.

Be interesting to see what happens to him in the future at Liverpool, if he's somehow involved in the first team(it would be a dream though!) or gets loaned to a Championship club he could also be a bolter for 2018, who knows….

Plus the kid at Southampton George Mells and he's only 16/17 he's also a central midfielder who apparently is quite versatile like the other two, again given a club like Southampton and how they promote within it would also be interesting to see what happens with him in the next few years. He has also represented the Joeys like Tanner but unlike like the former he has also represented Greece so i hope we can persuade to stay with us, its never too late given he's represented Greece at under 17 level.

And with those three midfielders plus the likes of Daniel De Silva, Ikonomidis at Lazio, Mustafa Amini at Dortmund and Luongo at Swindon( although i expect him to go up another level, i think he has the potential to play Premier League he's still only 21), and a few others the national team could POTENTIALLY be in for a interesting time post 2018 and beyond with these types of players coming through in midfield.

Nice digging there B4L, I hadn't heard of Tanner before, and it seems Brimmer is the mystery kid Rodgers was raving about when he visited to play Victory. Latest news on both:

News broke last week that Liverpool were set to add young Australian midfielder Jake Brimmer to their already strong academy. The 16 year-old playmaker, had two trials with the 2005 Champions League winners. His first trial was when he was spotted by Rodgers on Liverpool’s pre-season tour of Australia and the Far East. Now, this story came out when Rodgers and his team where ‘Down Under’, but Rodgers or his coaching staff wouldn’t reveal the identity of the then 15 year old gem, who turned out to be Brimmer. His second and last trial was in the first week of November and after again impressing like he did in Australia, Liverpool reportedly offered the Australian, who lives in Victoria, a contract with the club. The contract was reportedly agreed between all three parties, Brimmer, Liverpool and Brimmer’s current club Nunawading City FC. After agreeing a deal, it is down to signing the paperwork and sorting out secretarial issues such as work permits and his Visa before the 16 year old can officially become a Liverpool player, joining current Australians Brad Jones and Brad Smith at the club, and join the list of Australians that have represented Liverpool such as attacking midfielder Harry Kewell.

Brimmer was a player that came through the ranks of Nunawading under the leadership of his father Steve, who is the Manager. The midfielder has represented Australia at Under 15 level as well as at Under 17 level and has 3 caps for Australia Under 17s scoring just the once.

Brimmer recently took part in a trial to see if he can be selected for U16 AFC Championships along with fellow Victorians James Delianov and Luke Ward, who have been with Brimmer in many national events for Australia. Naturally, Brimmer showed his true ability and the Australia under 17 captain was selected for the AFC Championships. After researching Jake Brimmer, I for one would like to see the young Aussie in action at the Kirkby Academy in the future, and follow his journey and see if he can carry out his dream to become a professional footballer.

Can Blackburn Rovers hold on to youngster attracting interest from Premier League?

Sky Sports understands that a number of Premier League clubs are tracking the highly-rated 16-year-old.

Tanner has represented Australia at international youth level and has been with the Rovers academy for two years since arriving from his homeland. He has impressed the youth coaches at Ewood Park and this month was handed his first start for the Blackburn Under-21's, doing well in a 2-1 win over Newcastle United.

The midfielder is highly regarded at his club and it is unlikely they would welcome any approach for him. When a club has trained up and nurtured a player such as Tanner it can be hugely frustrating when bigger clubs start sniffing around. It can easily distract the player and they can have their head turned by the bigger clubs. Clearly Rovers have put a lot of time and effort into developing Hyuga so hopefully he can be allowed to progress at the club.

It is thought he could be heading for a place in the first-team squad in the not too distant future.

Blackburn are still pushing for a play-off spot under Gary Bowyer and they currently sit in 10th place, eight points off the play-offs with a game in hand on 6th-placed Nottingham Forest.

If the season did fizzle out and Blackburn had a few meaningless games at the end of the season then we could well be seeing Tanner being handed his professional debut.

Additions/changes to player database:

Luis Abadia (14 Apr 1995) – transferred to Kaya FC, Philippines

Mitchell Austin (3 Apr 1991) – loan to Brackley Town, England

Matt Bonasera (8 Jul 1995) – transferred to CF Badalona, Spain

Sam Gibson (11 Nov 1988) – transferred to SV Bergisch Gladbach 09, Germany

Curtis Good (23 Mar 1993) – loan return to Newcastle, England

Ryan Griffiths (21 Aug 1981) – transferred to Sarawak, Malaysia

Jordan Nadalin (28 Jan 1996) – transferred to Balzan, Malta

Lucas Neill (9 Mar 1978) – loan to Doncaster Rovers, England

I think its old news but it would appear that his WC hopes are shot. Hard to see some one making the cup from the U21 even if it is EPL unless he can grab another loan quick. Lowry I would say must be next choice for back up Lb should pip Zullo due to cb versatility.

Random Spanish article about "40 stars who could miss the world cup" includes Amini and Herd for some reason. Also Herd's contracts up this season I think, I wonder if an A-league club will get him.

http://www.elespectador.com/deportes/futbolinternacional/40-estrellas-podrian-perderse-el-mundial-galeria-483680

Also was looking up Ajdin Hrustic a Schalke Youth player. Is 18 and pretty much just been on the bench for the U-19s this season. Looks like he is very unlikely to choose to play for Australia according to this. Also I did find this link from his Facebook page so I guess he agrees with it.

Quote:
Meet successor Zvjezdan Misimovic playing for Bosnia and Herzegovina

Aydin Hrustić, 18-year-old midfielder who plays for Schalke's cadet team, was born in Australia and so far he wore jerseys South Melbourne and later Austria Vienna.

Today, with the number 10 and the same grades in the context of review games and maneuvering. Coach and sairači are full of praise about him and words of regret because of health problems.

Season 2013./2014., Accompanied by problems with a hernia and groin, and was subjected to surgery for my hernia and groin, but thank God, all successfully completed.

And while the future "Dragon" successfully recovering cleanly eagerly await the return of his contribution to facilitate the achievement of the goals, because they are on the verge of winning two titles, in Germany the league, as well as the Champions League, where the next day play in the semifinal with Barcelona.

Preoccupied with the recovery, not forgetting the national team of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the former says that calls could not accept because of health problems, "I had a dilemma and no other call is not an option, only homeland, regardless of the fact that I was born and raised in Australia" compelling is Aydin.

Since "Dragon" at the end says "extra motivation faster recovery and return to the field I find the belief that I will soon debitovati state-shirt and Herzegovina".

That random Spanish article is pretty accurate. Just says Amini burst onto the scene in Australia and excelled enough to go to Dortmund but injuries and no first team appearances has held him back from making the Aus squad. Similar to what it says for Herd. Fair enough. They must be doing a couple of football 'stars' from each team at the cup.

Not sure if much has been mentioned about them, but Thomas and Ryan Strain in the Villa academy have been getting a bit of game time for the u/21 side. Dont know exactly how old they are, but Im thinking 18 and 16.

What a surprise, they played for Joondalup before making the England/Aston Villa move. Give us an A2-League with Joondalup in it just for the talent exposure stakes, I couldn't give a fuck if they only get 200 spectators per game.

Villa brothers strain for glory

16 February 2014

Aston Villa’s Aussie youngsters, Ryan and Thomas Strain, are out to earn national representation as they chase their footballing dreams.
The England-born brothers, who moved to Australia as kids, both signed with Villa in 2012.
When the talented teens relocated back to the UK with their parents several years ago they were snapped up by the club's academy. Both feature in Villa's Under-18s youth side and have also been drafted into the Under-21s on occasion.
“It’s going good,” Ryan said.
“I’ve got a two-year scholarship. I’ve been starting every week for the youth team and I’ve been on the bench a few times for the Under-21s.”
Sixteen-year-old Ryan is an attacking midfielder while 18-year old Thomas is a striker and the leading goal scorer for the youth team.
As juniors they played together for the Modbury Jets in Adelaide and for the South Australian state representative team before heading back to England.
Ryan was with Coventry City’s youth set-up before the family moved to Australia.
“We just went for a holiday and thought it was better over there,” he said.
Sporting genes run strong in the family. Their grandfather, Jerry Baker, and his brother Joe are famous footballers. Jerry was a forward who played in the 1950s and 60s in Scotland and England, and for the United States national team while Joe, also a forward, represented England eight times and played for the likes of Hibernian, Torino, Arsenal, Nottingham Forest and Sunderland.
“He played for a lot of good teams,” Ryan said.
“They were pretty good.”
Ryan and Thomas’s mother Lorraine also competed in the 800m final at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
The brothers have been joined in the Aston Villa Academy by fellow Australian Jordan Lyden, who moved to the club in 2012 from Perth outfit ECU Joondalup.
Young Socceroo Lyden, a defensive midfielder, often partners Ryan in Villa’s Under-18s midfield. Thomas has also featured in Young Socceroo calculations and Ryan is keen to join them.
The Strain brothers have Australian citizenship but are also eligible to represent England, Ireland and Scotland.
“I’d like to play for Australia,” Ryan said.
His aim is to turn professional soon. Whether that is at Villa, or elsewhere, the dream of both brothers to play together and for Australia remains strong.
“I’m looking to go pro with Villa, or go on to play in Australia for Adelaide or something,” Ryan added.
“I played behind Thomas when we were at Modbury and I like playing with him - we’ve got a good chemistry.
“We both want to play for Australia. That’s the dream, to do it together, we’ll see what happens.”

Good is aiming to be back for Dundee's semi final against Rangers. So his loan move can't have been terminated:

One goal and one assist against AC Milan on the AIS/Centre of Excellence Italy tour. He'll be playing for them in the NYL next season so he'll be one to watch.
