Folks, I bring to you, a question that has brought much pondering and discussion to humanity through the ages. I bring this to you, in the search of an answer to this eternal question. What does a train do? When it goes past you, what is this train doing? A car Drives past you on the street. A boat sails past you. What does a train do? I trust you will be able to find me the answer to this vitally important question. So please...

I'm probably just over thinking it though,

Nowadays not so much but in the old days when they had steam trains, they chugged past you. "Thomas the Tank Engine chugged along the main railway whistling cheerfully as the passangers in Annie and Clarabel cheered him on".
WOLLONGONG WOLVES FOR A-LEAGUE EXPANSION!

Ah, so aeroplanes must "pilot" around, since they're operated by pilots. And motorbikes must "ride" past you, since the person at it's helm is a rider.

Depends which carriage your on I guess. If your on one that has a motor/engine that carriage is driving. If your on a carriage that is being pushed pulled you are rolling.
Going around corners the train whined/screeched/screamed(depending on the degree of noise) past.
The coal train trundled past
In the case of Maglev it flew/glided past.

I can't believe you actually made a thread on this  My first reaction was that it was a terrible thread...then I realised that it was better than just about every new thread in the last two months in ET.

It certainly raises that issue. If no ones driving it, it doesn't 'drive' past does it?

Funky Munky wrote:It certainly raises that issue. If no ones driving it, it doesn't 'drive' past does it? But it could be applied in the adverb form meaning "to send, expel, or otherwise cause to move by force or compulsion".

Funky Munky wrote:It certainly raises that issue. If no ones driving it, it doesn't 'drive' past does it? Looking up the definition of drive this is what I got operate and control the direction and speed of a motor vehicle. It doesn't say what has to operate and control it. A computer can drive a car by that definition. If you don't count a computer controlling a vehicle as driving in the movie Terminator does the Terminator drive the cars?
