Trained in Shotokan Karate for 7 years before taking up Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu (Japanese Sword) which I have been doing for 5+ years now (and will be taking over the school in Townsville when my Sensei moves away).

I did it for 8 years when i was younger, made it to 3rd degree black belt. My old man was one of the premier Martial Artists in Australia before he died. Was one of the first to be inducted into AMAHOF (Australasian Martial Arts Hall of Fame)

Don't usually post on here about anything except football, but saw this thread.

I did marital arts for about 18 years. It took over from football.

Did:

Shotokan.

Tae Kwon Do

Goju Kyu

Kung Fu

Kick boxing training/modern karate.

Did a lot of weight training to augment it.

Taught modern karate as an elective at a secondary college, when I taught there as a maths/science teacher.

I think I'm paying for it now as a 56 year old, with the strain I put on the muscular-skeletal system.

I think cage fighting is barbaric.](*,)

I did Kyokushin karate (about 4 yrs) and Teakwondo (about 3 years) and dabbled in a few other styles over the years but admit I wasn't particuarly good at any of them. I probably enjoyed the philosophical/traditional side of things more than the actual combat, although being on the end of a punch in the nose can be surprisingly liberating (weird, I know). For anyone starting out it really does depend on what you want out of it. Personally, if you want self-defense skills and a martial art with a traditional base to it as well, I'd say Kyokushin karate can fill that gap. Of course, there are plenty of other styles and I reckon there's nothing wrong with trying out a few before you settle on one that is right for you. And be wary of anyone who thinks their style is totally superior to any other and the best style for everyone.

I'm a bit too old to get back into any of the 'harder' styles but am thinking about taking up one of the 'internal' kung fu styles. If I was a young lad again though I'd probably look to combine ju jutsu/judo and boxing.

wow so many interesting replies.
i actually liked wing chun, i liked the traditional aspect of it,
respecting the master, remaining calm, and trying to avoid fights where
possible etc. i cant watch ufc and stuff, i cringe when they have a guy locked
in a position and just keep elbowing there head like 50 times.
it astounds me the anger these beasts seem to have, quite scary!
i would like to get back into it as i miss the sharpness i had when i did train.
i also find it very calming and the people there where all quite nice.

Decentric, know that feeling.

After 7 years of Karate I can "click" every bone/part of my body.

Enjoying the Sword a lot as of late, was always my path to take but found Karate first.

Understand where people come from in regards to UFC/MMA but alas that is the way of the world in modern times.

Ground£ is pretty much how things would go down in the street (with weapons involved).

Sad but true.

Been doing Muay Thai on and off for the last year. Planning on getting back into it properly this new year though.
