Quote:Football Queensland Ingham & Carroll "Best Outside A-League" Two of the National Premier Leagues rising stars have been named as part of the country’s top eight players outside the A-League in leading football publication FourFourTwo Australia’s latest issue. Flying young Olympic FC winger Jai Ingham and FNQ FC Heat striker Jamie Carroll feature in the July edition’s ‘Best Player Outside The A-League’ feature, which includes praise from Football Queensland Technical Director Gary Phillips. Ingham’s sparkling form for Olympic this season has won plenty of praise, the 19 year old scoring five goals from the flank in twelve appearances for the league leaders. 23 year old Carroll has been in similarly good touch for the Cairns based Heat this season, scoring five goals including a hat-trick in a 3-2 win against Queensland Academy of Sport in Round 9. The magazine’s feature has been a regular favourite amongst Australian football fans and a barometer for state-based talent, previously bringing to attention the likes of current Socceroos star and former Palm Beach Sharks and QAS product Tommy Oar. http://www.sportingpulse.com/assoc_page.cgi?client=1-9385-0-0-0&sID=269940&&news_task=DETAIL&articleID=24079916

Quote:NPL Round 13 Weekly Wrap Olympic FC 2 (Tim SMITS 28’, Jai INGHAM 62’) Queensland Academy of Sport 0 Crowd: 600 (approx.) League leaders Olympic FC returned to winning ways on Friday night defeating Queensland Academy of Sport 2-0 in chilly conditions at Goodwin Park. Striker Tim Smits scored the first half opener for the hosts before pacey winger Jai Ingham netted the second and deciding goal just after the hour. Smits pounced on 28 minutes when young QAS goalkeeper Fraser Chalmers failed to hold a floated free kick, the former Brisbane Roar marksman tapping in from close range for his first goal in more than a month for the league leaders. Ingham doubled the lead, and ultimately sealed the result, when he floated off his wing and into a central position, rifling home his shot from 20 yards for his sixth goal of the campaign. It’s the second time Olympic have held QAS scoreless this season and the side’s second clean sheet in their past three outings, dispelling doubts concerning the surety of their defence. The result sees Olympic maintain their stranglehold on top spot in the league, extending their advantage to six points following the postponement of cross-town rivals Brisbane City’s match up with Brisbane Strikers. Northern Fury 2 (Matthew RICHARDS 27’, Alex READ 75’) CQFC Energy 2 (Chris GEDDES 23’ 60’) Crowd: 800 (approx.) Lower table battlers CQFC Energy fell short of an unlikely win Townsville on Saturday night, twice letting slip the lead against Northern Fury to draw 2-2 at Brolga Park. Chris Geddes proved the star for the visitors, scoring both sides of half time only to see his brace evened out by goals to Matthew Richards and Alex Read. Geddes has scored 17 times now this season for Energy, and the prolific Scot fittingly opened the game when he finished a cross at close range on 23 minutes. Richards replied four minutes later when he slotted home Mick Eisenhut’s cross with a right footed strike from 10 yards. Geddes put Energy ahead again on the hour with a sensational strike, burning the back of the net from 25 yards out past outstretched Fury goalkeeper Brad Burrows. Parity was restored though when Read darted on to Robin Edwards’ pass and finished deftly. The draw is CQFC’s first of the season and earns the Rockhampton-based club only their seventh point of the campaign. They remain in 11th place on the NPL table while Fury also stay steady in seventh position. FNQ FC Heat 2 (Cameron NUCIFORA 38’, Tom MURPHY 50’) Redlands United 4 (Graham FYFE 24’(p) 58’ 80’, George BARBAROUSES 85’) Crowd: 1200 (approx.) A set-piece hat-trick from attacking midfielder Graham Fyfe has guided Redlands United to a come-from-behind 4-2 win against FNQ FC Heat at Borzi Park on Saturday night. A 1200 strong crowd witnessed the first NPL fixture in Mareeba, however the impressive turn out wasn’t enough to get the home side across the line against the in form Devils. Redlands survived a scare when Heat took the lead early in the second half, but the visitors finished strongly to record their second straight win and move to third on the NPL table. Fyfe’s opener came from the penalty spot before Heat mdifielder Cameron Nucifora ensured the sides went in to half time level when he converted Jamie Carroll’s cross at the back post – the promising 17 year old’s first goal of the campaign. Tom Murphy gave the hosts a deserved lead shortly after the restart when he pounced on a rebound after Carroll and Nucifora once again combined. Redlands were spurred into action and Fyfe levelled terms once more only eight minutes later, converting a well-taken free kick into the far corner from the right side of goal. Fyfe wrapped up his hat-trick from another free kick with ten minutes to play, striking the ball into the bottom left hand corner from the edge of the area for his eleventh goal of the season. George Barbarouses then settled the result in Redlands favour five minutes later when he beat two defenders on the counter attack then finished surely past Heat goalkeeper Anthony Zecchinati. Moreton Bay United Jets 2 (Royce BROWNLIE 39’ 90’+1) Sunshine Coast FC Fire 0 Crowd: 700 (approx.) Moreton Bay United captain Royce Brownlie has inspired his side to an impressive 2-0 win over mid-table rivals Sunshine Coast Fire on Saturday night at Wolter Park to move the Jets into finals contention. Brownlie twice earned then converted from set pieces, calmly slotting his first from the penalty spot prior to the half before sealing the points with an emphatic free kick in injury time. Jets came close to opening accounts inside ten minutes when Michael Zappone saw his shot bounce back off the post. The hosts controlled the game and deservedly took the lead when Brownlie was brought down near the byline for the opener prior to half time. Fire showed more impetus in the second half as chances fell to both teams – Paul Arnison coming close from free kicks either side of the goal while James Verdin spurned his finish after a well worked move on 79 minutes. A frantic final ten minutes fired up the vocal Wolter Park crowd before Brownlie was felled on the edge of the area – the former Brisbane Roar and Wellington Phoenix player firing home the subsequent free kick to the delight of his team mates. The Jets have now defeated Fire twice this season and pull even with their northern neighbours on 22 competition points just outside the NPL top four, adding spice to the burgeoning rivalry between the two clubs. Western Pride v Palm Beach Sharks - POSTPONED The Friday night fixture between Western Pride and Palm Beach Sharks was postponed due to inclement weather. It will be rescheduled for a date to be advised. Brisbane Strikers v Brisbane City – POSTPONED The Saturday night fixture between Brisbane Strikers and Brisbane City was postponed due to a fault with the Perry Park floodlights. It will be rescheduled for a date to be advised. http://www.sportingpulse.com/assoc_page.cgi?client=1-9385-0-0-0&sID=269940&&news_task=DETAIL&articleID=24125277

Quote:FFA bans anf ines players for betting FOOTBALL Federation Australia has announced bans and fines for six players caught betting on a pre-season cup match in Queensland. The head body handed down the sanctions after investigating information handed to it by a betting agency following the match between Brisbane Olympic FC, which plays in the National Premier League, and Rochedale Rovers, which plays in the Brisbane Premier League, in February. As a result all six players – four from Brisbane and two from Rochedale – were charged under the national code of conduct and have been banned for four games and fined between $200 and $1000. An FFA statement said that three of the players were involved in the match. “FFA was contacted by a betting agency regarding information it held on betting activity on a match by a group of players from the two clubs,” FFA Head of Legal, Business Affairs and Integrity, Jo Setright said. “The integrity of football in Australia is a matter of great importance and FFA takes compliance with the National Code of Conduct in this area very seriously. “Three of the players participated in the match. While this is not a case of match-fixing, all six individuals were in clear breach of the Code prohibiting betting on matches and have been sanctioned, each with a four match suspension and fines ranging from $200 to $1,000 based on the level of league they play in. “This incident shows that FFA’s detection methods work and FFA will enforce the Code through our rigorous integrity measures.” http://www.theaustralian.com.au/sport/football/ffa-bans-anf-ines-players-for-betting/story-fn63e0vj-1226673223248

Four weeks suspension is weak IMO. Regardless of what sort of $$$ are involved the rules are there and the punishment doesn't seem to fit the crime.
Interesting too that two of the four Olympic players caught are their goalkeepers! I assume they'll have to promote their Under 18 keeper for the next four weeks. That will be a bit of an initiation.

Fury have lost their 2nd player within the last month, with captain Jared Stanley quitting for personal reasons. Along with the injuries, it seems it's going to be a testing period for the young team.

Have to say overall they've done well all things considered. Bit of luck common sense will prevail next year and security expenditure will be fucked off so the team can afford accommodation on away travels (and many fans may then return as well).

It is IMO long past time to form a committee (separate from all other boards and committees) dedicated to raising money for the development of football in townsville, and to distribute said monies as seen fit and proper.

I'm not sure how everyone else feels but personally I find the lack of local players in the team a bit disappointing. They may be a stronger side than the razorbacks of last season but atleast the team was made up of more local talent, therefor I had more of a connection with the team. What I have enjoyed immensely this year is the competiveness of the Townsville premier league, halfway through the season with the top 5 teams only separated by 4 points

We must first take care of the money and then the negative anti football committees with in our zone, and let the coaching staff take care of the on field development and performance.

Pride proves club can compete with bestTHE Western Pride claimed another National Premier League heavyweight scalp over the weekend, knocking over the third-placed Brisbane City 4-2. City were on a run of 13 straight wins before their trip to North Ipswich Reserve on Saturday. The win was the second straight win over a top-of-the-table opponent for the Pride who beat the second-placed Redlands United 3-1 last weekend. Goals from Devon Munn, Russell Woodruffe, Will Jordan and Peter Drager saw them overcome their more fancied opposition. The first goal came just two minutes into the contest through Munn after a mad scramble following a corner kick in the Pride's first attacking raid. Jordan said the team had been putting together a strong run of form. "We started where he left off the week before against Redlands," he said. Drager scored the first goal of the second half before City's late goal. Jordan said the Pride was starting to put together a strong run of form and establishing themselves as a team deserving to play in the NPL. "At the start of the year there were people saying we were just there to make up the numbers, but I think now we're starting to prove that we can be a real threat," he said. Pride coach Kasey Wehrman said the team was starting to prove itself. "They haven't been flukes either; they really went out there and played well," he said. While conceding his team was unlikely to make the finals, Wehrman said he would be happy with a finish just outside the top teams. "We said a while ago we weren't finishing anywhere near the top this year," he said. "We're trying to build a team for the future here to hopefully succeed in future seasons." Quote:American Duo Depart City Brisbane City confirmed today the departure of American imports Eric Frazier and Thomas Shannon for defending Victorian Premier League champions Dandenong Thunder. The club stated the pair had already departed for Melbourne in a bid to rescue Thunder’s final hopes and will play no further part in City’s NPL campaign. Both players have been instrumental in City’s recent 13 match unbeaten run, which was halted on Saturday in Ipswich by an unexpected 4-2 defeat at the hands of Western Pride. In addition to wearing the captain’s armband this season, Thomas Shannon led the City back four to five clean sheets during the league record unbeaten streak. Frazier’s absence will be more telling at other end of the pitch – the classy winger scoring 12 goals this season to be City’s second leading goal scorer behind striker Antonio Murray. The pair’s NPL Queensland form saw them hand-picked by new Dandenong coach Stuart Munro. The speed of the deal was necessitated by the Victorian league’s July 17 transfer deadline. Dandenong Thunder is considered one of Victoria’s premier football clubs. In 2012 they claimed the Victorian treble – finishing first in the VPL regular season as well as winning the Grand Final and the state’s knock-out cup competition. An announcement from City posted via social media said, “Brisbane City has always maintained it will not hold back players from looking to develop or chase their football dream and this is no exception.” “The tight deadline is what made it a whirlwind couple of days with players discussing the pros and cons with the coaching staff,” the statement continued. “In the end, it was an opportunity that couldn't be knocked back, and although the timing is not ideal- it rarely is when these situations occur.” “Our fans have enjoyed the contribution both players have made to what has been a successful season and we wish them all the best.” City currently sit third in the NPL Queensland title race on 35 competition points, level with second-placed Redlands United and 11 points adrift of league leaders and cross-town rivals Olympic FC. They host Queensland Academy of Sport this Friday night at Spencer Park in Round 18, with kick-off scheduled for 8:30pm. http://www.sportingpulse.com/assoc_page.cgi?client=1-9385-0-0-0&sID=269940&&news_task=DETAIL&articleID=24572156
