Nice one Damo, have watched it several times now. Cruyff has such an interesting approach to the game.

He also adjusts tactics to the players ability as he says he wouldn't play a false or deep No.9 if Van Nistelroy is playing etc.

Interesting how he says he would not play two deep lying midfielders together, take note Holger.

I also like his approach on how to best support the player with the ball, run away from him don't go towards him.

I have to admit I'm a huge fan of his.

The FFA does it the opposite way at the moment, the system comes first and the players have to fit in to it.

The 3-4-3 with a diamond midfield is what Cruyff used as the base model for the Barca youth teams 25 years ago and they were still using it when the current generation of Barca stars were coming through. There was an excellent article I read maybe 3-4 years ago comparing the youth programs of a few different clubs Barca being one of them. They said each player was expected to be able to play 3 different positions within this system and at some point in most games the coach would change the system to test the players adaptability and ability to follow tactical instructions. Messi, Fabregas and Pique were all in the same team, even though he was a central defender Pique used to often play at the base of the midfield diamond to develop his ball playing ability. We never see a change of system from a Skillaroo, State or NTC team now (changing from a midfield triangle facing forward to backwards doesn't count, in a properly functioning midfield 3 there should be constant rotation amongst the trio which FFA doesn't like for some reason) and players are specialising in one position at an early age.

For me Cesar Luis Menotti, Cryff & Arrigo Sacchi are great coaches. I think Menotti influenced Marcelo Bielsa. Cryff influenced Barca & Pep Guardiola.
Arrigo Sacchi influenced everyone with his all over pressing by his magnificent Milan team of circa '93. ( Named my son Milan after their unbeaten run ) \:d/

Luckily I was told by a state coach that FFA won't sanction the attacking midfield triangle for ages below 16. I was going to use it in the last FFA course prac. assessment that I did!

I think the theory behind the 1-4-3-3 defensive triangle, with a 1-4-2-3-1 in defence, is trying to get one system played well in the embryonic stages of development.

I think I'll pose it to the state TD about using the attacking triangle for 13 and 14 year olds. I used it in a state championship for girls under 12s in 2009.

I am trying players in 3-5 positions. Players sometimes like positions they play more than others. The problem occurs when coaches think they have more aptitude for positions they don't like as much. ATM I'm coaching the state left back in a rep team. He doesn't really like the position, but is certainly effective as a LB.

This can also be called the 1-4-3-3 with a 3:1 back four, instead of the flat back four.

Then one assumes the defensive triangle in midfield. This works well against the 4-4-2 with the midfield diamond.

This was considered standard practice by KNVB to negate the accelerated attacking abilities of modern teams. This practice manifested in the European championships, just after or just before I learnt this.

The one screener was considered inadequate against a quality contemporary team's ability to counter attack.
