Harper has made a massive journalistic cock-up (evident in his original words) - a case of an over-zealous soccerina a bit too eager to sink the slipper into the big bad AFL. It was Port Adelaide Football Club, not the AFL, who prevented Burgess from assisting Adelaide United. This was confirmed in a statement provided by PAFC to the Adelaide Advertiser on Wednesday night. Port Adelaide CEO Keith Thomas made the decision before advising Adelaide United officials in February. Quote:“We were happy for Darren to begin assisting Adelaide United in its search for a new coach,” Mr Thomas said. “But with the 2013 AFL season approaching, I reached the view that Darren’s efforts were best concentrated on the challenges of preparing the Port Adelaide Football Club for the year ahead.”

It's interesting though, AFL are very clear about the fact that they are at war with other codes. They make no bones about it, they do all they can to protect their turf and they use whatever means necessary and are not worried about how they'll be seen by being open and honest about it.
There is definitely a code war on and football needs to recognise it and use whatever means it has to succeed. There needs to be a greater push for land space at grassroots level to start with.

Funny article from Andy Harper, comparing Arnie's admission that he watched a game of NRL, with an employee of one club working for another club.
I'm sure fear was the basis for the decision - those average crowds of 12,300 and ratings of 71,000, right through the Summer, have got the AFL running scared.

AFL's reputation as the schoolyard bully on Australia's sporting landscape has been enhanced by its decision to prevent a Port Adelaide employee from volunteering to help A-League club Adelaide United find a new coach. Quote:What are the AFL worried about? The only explanation is the obvious one, which is that the AFL is the biggest kid in the schoolyard and is looking to exact total dominance over the marketplace. I dont think The Wanderers and Syd FC are that much in competition with the Giants and Swans, but surely guys like Ono and Del Piero are much bigger talents than Franklin.

Yeah, nice thread title Joffa. You dunce.
The AFL isn't considering extending its season to "attack rival codes" It's got nothing to do with that. The only thing the AFL cares about is its own coffers. And that's the only reason they're extending the season. It has naught to do with any other code.

It's a bit hysterical to describe this as a plan to attack rival codes.
Each code tries to do the best for itself, and of all of the four football codes, the AFL has the tightest time frame within which to play its season because it has always shared ovals with cricket (on roughly a 27 week/25 week split).
Two issues emerge: 1. The PFA wants to introduce two byes per season (currently one) as a player welfare issue, but the AFL cannot extend the season to allow that.
2. Super Rugby and the NRL start 3 or 4 weeks earlier than the AFl, and that impacts on their marketing into the Northern states, where AFL is weaker than the other codes. To want to start a bit earlier is a commercial decision for the AFL (if it can work its way round the cricket season), and it's a stretch for anyone to argue that it's an attack on rival codes who are free to start and end whenever they wish.

Three manic derbies in Sydney. Same last year in Melbourne. I'd prefer to focus on that in AF than this thread.

Source? I thought the GWS & Suns were about adding 2 games to their TV package. could be wrong I only hear what I hear about the AFL via the overlap from the Crows etc being on every bloody media service here in ADL. OK it was not an official AFL statement as such. But do recall on the Backpage (foxtel programme, now off the air) a couple of years ago with those RL dinosaurs Mike Gibson, Paul Kent & Billy Birmingham was discussing the coming of the GWS Giants into the West Sydney & the affect on Rugby League, the token AFL guy on the panel (silver hair guy), let these guys ramble on & than said, the AFL are putting a team there to compete with the new West Sydney football side, because even then they knew football was/is their main rivals as no 2 sport is NSW. They also knew though they have football well covered in the AFL heartland states that football was probably the no 2 sport down there as well (apart from maybe Perth).

I don't mind if someone else wants to move it, the reason why it was posted in Australian Football is because it directly mentions the A-League. Quote:THE AFL will consider breaking a long-standing tradition and extending the season as soon as next year in a bold bid to attack the "free hits" it gives rival codes which start earlier....The NRL, Super 15s and A-League are all in full swing by the first week of March, dominating media attention in the two northern states. Edited by Joffa: 1/4/2013 11:27:14 PM It may mention the A-League but it is not about it. I agree with the sentiment that people would be calling for a banning (like lemmings) if this had been posted by Mister Football.
