Is it strange for people to wear their shirts outside of games?
Is it strange to own a football shirt at all?
Why do people choose to wear 'casual' clothing to games?

1. Not really. 2. No. 3. If by casual you mean "ultra casual" it's because it's part of the ultra sub-culture in football. It started with firms wanting to make it harder for police to recognise them as football supporters and has grown from there.

Not at all, I regularly wear my sports teams shirts.
Most definitely not.
Some people forget to wash their supporter gear or are there for something to do.

I used to wear my Victory shirt to work on weekends. That's about it for wearing it in public.

Yeah yeah I know what ultra casual means, a couple of my mates go casual to games. But in Australia it is hardly due to warding off police presence. Is it because they don't believe in supporting the club by means of purchasing merchandise?

No.
No.
Some people are just there for a night out.
Really is quite silly to own a football shirt, or any sporting team you support shirts and not wear it in public. They your team, show your passion and be proud that you a supporter.

I oftens wear my Sydney jersey. And when I'm in Western Sydney, I puff my chest out, take a long drawn out sip of my Skinny Latte, and stare down anybody who dares look twice!

I wear all my sports tops in public, expensive bits of clothing not to. Funny enough I usually don't wear them to games because I prefer to go straight out after and not have to go home and change.
Full kit wankers on the other hand...

I seriously just don't get the casual thing. The style itself is cool but the concept is strange, particularly in Australia.

I wear my football strips on days off, when going to the local markets or when doing non dirty work in the yard.
I go Casual to games as the culture connected to casual is more aligned to my own mentality, the wearing of Football supporter gear is heavily connected to the "family friendly" entertainment connected to the dilution of the once great game given over to the corporations. I.e. no standing outside of specific areas, criminalisation of supporters, banning orders with no right to appeal, Docket rocket bans, pull over bans (because like the boats that has stopped), continuous over policing leading to way too much agro.
Wearing a football strip you're a walking billboard advertising what ever your club chooses to tell you, you want. The best football strips in the A-League are or were the Newcastle sponsor free shirts.
Look at Victory away? they went from the best away strip in the league to a literal shirt designed to match their sponsors colours and didn't give a flying fuck that these colours match that of their most bitter rivals.
As for casual wear, I prefer brands by smaller producers, brands made by casuals for casuals, Peaceful hooligan, Three Stroke Productions, Terrace Originals, Northern Soul, Casual Connoisseur, Curious Gentleman, 3nil, FTI Clothing. though I am still attracted to Lyle and Scott, Burberry, Ben Sherman (love their jackets and the Rounda Tee is a must), Lacoste and Henri Lloyd. You also have to have Adidas originals or a pair of Diadora (my personal favourite trainer).
Brands I steer clear of Fred Perry (too many fakes and all too common), Stone Island (you may as well put a target on your back and be asked to get stomped and robbed), Fila (it's just a little dated) and Barbour jackets (it's never THAT cold in Australia)

I do understand it, the whole idea just doesn't appeal to me. When going to a neutral game I wear casual-ish clothing, not full on casual though. They are entitled to wear what they want, as everyone is.

I'll wear them if I'm playing sport with friends or watching a relevant game at a friends place and obviously to game days. But for some reason I feel like a dick if I wear them out socially or casually.

You actually pay more for a 'replica' shirt, which actually has the sponsors logo front and centre. I tend to wear the team polo or supporter short that just has the team logo and the A-League logo and nothing else.

I wear my 'real shirts' (i.e. the ones that aren't cheap knock-offs from China) out casually, although I've only got a Blackburn one, Star Wars one and Glory one. I have a few cheap fake ones, but I just wear them to training.

I wear a Celtic shirt in public from time to time, can be approached by other Celtic fans or Rangers fans for a bit of a mostly friendly chat. I used to have dreads like Henrik Larrson and the Celtic fans used to love that, was photographed a few times.
I wear a St Pauli shirt out and about too. Have worn it at a rave, it attracts Germans for a chat. They love that you have a obscure German shirt on and not one of the big clubs.
I only wear Victory gear to Victory games for some reason.

Isn't St Pauli now just a trendy label? love St Pauli and all but they've become a brand synonymous with left and gay/women's rights movements?
St Pauli shirts are like the Ramones shirts, everyone trying to fit the scene has one.

I've got a few A-League kits but most of them look clunky with all the shit on them and the dud badges. The ones I wear out are more sleek and well-fitted, like a Dynamo Moscow one. The cyrillic on the back is usually a conversation starter.
By now, American Samoa must have realised that Australias 22-0 win over Tonga two days earlier was no fluke.

I wear my shitty old Liverpool shirts around everywhere. Nearly everything has fallen off them so they are basically just red shirts with a barely legible stitched Liverpool logo now.
I have only ever worn my Sydney shirts to games. They mean more to me and I don't want them to get wrecked.
My Olympic Sharks shirt stays in my cupboard permanently. I hate people asking what the hell "Bank of Cyprus" is.

Wear my Heart shirt all game day around Ballarat and Melbourne on game days. Tomorrow will be a pain in the arse getting the train from Ballarat to Melbourne, then onto Clayton for my exam then back into the city for the match, then back to Ballarat that night...but I'll do all that in my Heart shirt (we need all the advertising we can get, even if it means coping abuse all day).

I've got heaps of Gunners tops that get a good airing - mainly when exercising. I especially love the redcurrent 05-06 top... it has O2 on the front but that doesn't bother me.
No-one knows what the advertising on my 01-02 home shirt is - Dreamcast - it seems so old now when you look at games nowadays.
I don't have the current kit and with the one just superceded I made the mistake of washing in warm water and the 'Fly Emirates' came off - which is good to a point until it looks like a knock off cos you can see the faded marks where the lettering used to be.
I also wear a Barca top, Celtic top or Socceroos top when playing in the park with mates or exercising (The Socceroos top means I don't have to wear a bib).
I strictly only wear Heart tops to games (or whilst watching away matches on tv) and have white heart/arsenal training tops for my recreational teams at Box Hill Indoor Sports (Micro Machines) and Ringwood City7s (Real Ale Madrid). The Caulfield Cougars have club kits so it only when you have to wash them that I have them outside of match day so they don't get worn.
My work is casual so rarely have to wear shirts - in fact I've not had to wear a tie this year.
Just re-read this post and wondered if anyone actually cares... oh well [post]

So much of this post makes me laugh. Haha, it's a great day out, I recommend it.

I have only ever worn my Sydney shirts to games. They mean more to me and I don't want them to get wrecked.
My Olympic Sharks shirt stays in my cupboard permanently. I hate people asking what the hell "Bank of Cyprus" is. Did you go to "oh-leem-pick!" games when they played at shark park too?

Wore my MV top car shopping a couple of weeks ago. The salesman was a school friend of Francesco Stella and assured me that Stella is a gun and will thrive given a chance. I didn't buy the car.

Yes with my Brett Emerton junior members card. It started my love of watching live football.

Is it strange for people to wear their shirts outside of games? Yes ction. Is it strange to own a football shirt at all? No Why do people choose to wear 'casual' clothing to games? Looks better than a walking corporate logo. Hope I answered some of your questions to your satisfaction.
