We went to the local railway Museum with the Girls on the Weekend and rode a Steam Train (my girls are obsessed with trains of any description) with Santa and his Elves. Then my girls lined up to sit on Santa's knee and told him what they wanted.
My eldest, a new sand pit and a pool.
My Middle, Watermelon!
Classic! was a great day, I love the guy in the big red suit!

Can you please point me to something Jesus said that is in favor of these kinds of light displays. Please point me to where Jesus said he wasn't in favour of abortions and cocaine.

Lets get rid of the public holiday and let everyone choose to celebrate whatever festival whenever they like or not to celebrate one at all. Either that or give us public holidays for the festivals of all religions. Speaking as an atheist, I love Christmas. 99% of the day is in no way religious, before or after Christians took on the day to celebrate the birth of their pal Jesus, which they're free to enjoy, and I enjoy Christmas trees and catching up with family for a big dinner. Australia is a multicultural country and everyone is free to observe the day in any way they see fit. All of this.

Lets get rid of the public holiday and let everyone choose to celebrate whatever festival whenever they like or not to celebrate one at all. Either that or give us public holidays for the festivals of all religions. Im an atheist and I love Xmas! I have quite the extensive Christmas record collection, Brian Setzer, Frank/Dean/Sammy Bing, Pupinni Sisters, Royal Crown Revue, Chris Isaac, Beach Boys, some twisted Mambo Xmas album and so many more! Last Sunday as is tradition with my family we had the trimming of the tree and my two elder girls (the younger is only 3 months) put up the decorations and we put the tinsel up in the yard, it was very cute and a magical afternoon. My girls have been doing Xmas craft all week and have written their letters to Santa and are on their best behaviour, we have started watching Xmas films. By the time the 24th gets here (for our German celebration) my kids will be bursting at the sides waiting to hear Santa banging around in the house whilst we're all outside to finally come in side and find their stockings full of wonderful things. Then on Xmas morning they'll have regular Xmas with Santa leaving gifts under the tree before trekking off to see family that we don't see very often because of work schedules and lack of time available, and we'll eat and laugh and drink and sing and if we're really lucky get to see Grandpa fall asleep with his teeth on his chest! TL;DR Christmas is wonderful no matter whether you are a Christian or not. A wonderful picture of joy and love, the spirit of Christmas at its finest.

Christmas is a time of love, a time to spend with loved ones.
It brings much joy to many people.
It is not something to be hated, it should be embraced and enjoyed.

Big wrote:The so called celebration of the birth of Jesus has be contaminated by pagan influences Saturnalia was the original pagan celebration at the end of the year, a week long festival of eating, drinking and exchanging gifts with family and friends. Sound familiar? It was contaminated by the Christian mythology of the birth of Jesus, despite the fact it was known that he wasn't born in the year "0BC", nor in the month of December.

Lets get rid of the public holiday and let everyone choose to celebrate whatever festival whenever they like or not to celebrate one at all. Either that or give us public holidays for the festivals of all religions. Atheists would love the fact that they could work on a day that means nothing to them and get massive bonuses. All that many public holidays and weekends mean to most people nowadays is a chance to earn penalty rates. The blame for this is with the casualisation of labour and outside the scope of this thread.

Why the assumption that Christmas means nothing to Atheists? I refer you to Tim Minchin's song White Wine In The Sun.

America was largely the same, but being founded by people of that faith meant it would always be the majority religion which is why I guess people refer to Western nations as "Christian". -PB
