SHANE Smeltz is destined to return to Adelaide United a decade after the Reds Mk I allowed the A-League's most prolific goalscorer to leave SA.

Smeltz has had long standing ties with Adelaide.

He met his wife, Nikki, in Adelaide and bought a house before no Reds A-League contract forced Smeltz, now 32, to move to England to pursue a career.

But Adelaide faces a fight for the Perth Glory striker's signature for the 2014/15 season.

It's understood Glory has initiated contact for a possible contract extension while Brisbane Roar is also sizing up the forward given marksman Besart Berisha may be on the move.

Berisha has been linked to Sydney FC.

"I look after myself and pride myself on keeping myself in good condition that's what I think the professional's game has gone anyway,'' Smeltz said.

To celebrate the season of giving, we're taking a look at some of the occasions where keepers have gifted goals to opposition players. Yep it's goalkeeping howlers!

"If you do that you can play on.

"I feel as that my body is good and I can score goals and obviously you're going to be in demand.

"The way I see it I just want to get back playing now I think I owe that firstly to Perth.

"This season I think I have missed too many games.

"That's through injury and international duty and all the rest of it.

"I really want to kick on and them sort of things talking to clubs they sort themselves out.

"Right now I can say if I'll be here for Perth or playing somewhere else.

"For me I want to play good football and then we'll see what happens."

The All Whites striker first featured as a 20-year-old for Adelaide City in 2002 before penning a one-season Reds deal during the final year of the now defunct national soccer league.

More than 11 years later the Glory striker has scored 73 A-League goals - an all-time high - in 126 matches for a return of more than a goal every two games.

Smeltz's goals average hasn't been seen at the Reds since former Adelaide striker Serginho van Dijk left Adelaide for a contract in Indonesia in January.

Van Dijk will start a new stint with Iranian club Sepahan in the New Year.

Adelaide football director Michael Petrillo did not return calls to The Advertiser on Wednesday.

Interesting to note that van Dijks going to Iran, especially after the long, and drawn-out Indonesian saga.
