It's good publicity for the UFC. It made mainstream news. I'd almost suggest that it was staged, as Bones' punch didn't look like it connected.

I just bought tickets to see Gustafsson vs Anthony Johnson in January.

Is this fight a big deal?

It will be a big deal here in Sweden. Gustafsson is popular.

As an extra bonus they are fighting at my teams football stadium. Although looking online they are not selling 30000 tickets

It's a reasonable big deal, it is effectively the number one contender fight for Jon Jones' light heavy weight belt.

It is definitely a matter of opinion what the best weight class is. For entertainment, my own opinion is that in general light-heavy and middleweight are the most entertaining - lots of guys with one hit knockout power, but with plenty of cardio and technical ability. In the heavyweight division, after the top few there are a lot of big guys that run out of gas and rely solely on on big punch to win.

Shout out to Daniel Andrew's VIctorian Labor government for unbanning it, and Melbourne's ability to put on the big events. The UFC sent their biggest drawcard ever straight to us at the first opportunity thanks to this.

They should say to ban boxing as well or any form of contact sport.

People complain about violence however these girls know what they're in for. I'm sure if you asked either of them they'd reply with something along the lines of 'we know what we're in for'.

How long till the rematch

I don't follow Rousey much but she's always got that stupid mean girl attitude look on her face. It was nice to see her get knocked, hopefully she will revert to her default normal face from now on.

Other thing about Rousey, she is the most overhyped overrated athlete on the planet. Clearly women's UFC is a NEW sport, the talent pool is severely limited. As the sport grows and more women and girls get into it, naturally superior athletes and fighters will rise up. In a few years no one will remember Rousey.

She was in WWE for the cash, but she is an Olympic athlete so I don't think play wrestling will be in her future.

Gotta disagree with you there - women's MMA has existed for a long time, the UFC didn't invent it.

Whilst Rousey ran through some fighters you could argue were sub-par, the fact is that she has been the most dominant fighter in the history of the UFC. She hasn't dodged any fights. The only person out there is Cyborg, but she is not in the same weight division, and has had a history of steroid issues.

People forget this was Ronda's 3rd fight in 9 months - that is phenomenal.

Yes, she is massively hyped.
Yes, she has a huge chip on her shoulder.

But that doesn't matter, the only thing that matters is getting it done in the octagon.

She has been a 1 trick pony so far, to the extent that her strategy has been all-out aggression. She wasn't able to overwhelm her opponent this time, and got found out.

She is still an amazing fighter, and will be better from the loss. It will make her more well rounded.

Stating that "in a few years no one will remember Rousey" is absurd and ignorant in the extreme. She put women's MMA on the map and made it credible as a big money draw. Even if she lost 10 matches in a row now, she will always be the Don Bradman or Babe Ruth of women's MMA.

Knowing how desperate they are for ratings they may throw a truck load at her for 1 or 2 events to actually get in the ring thou

She will take some time away from the octagon (she has had 3 fights in 9 months), sort out her personal life and coaching issues.

She will be back within 6 months - either straight back into a rematch, or via a couple of fights to get rid of ring rust.

She will eventually have a WWE run, but she has 6 fights left on her UFC contract and they have already said she cannot do anything for WWE involving physicality.

She is 28 I think - 6 more fights will put her past the age of 30. Then the WWE will make her the Brock Lesnar of the women's division of WWE once her UFC contract ends. But not beforehand.

Oh contract wise cant see her going then, I know WWE wanted her at wrestlemania.

Hopefully the re match comes around sooner rather than later will be interesting viewing that is for sure

The WWE Cash train has dried up for Ms Rousey imo. She loses alot of her value without the streak.

Gotta disagree - look at Brock Lesnar. Multiple UFC losses, even a previous WWE run that ended with a terrible main event match vs Goldberg, yet look at the draw he is now.

Rousey vs Charlotte would be HUUUUUUUGE!!!!

But it won't happened for at least a few years yet.

Lesnar isn't much of a draw for WWE. Great draw for UFC.

Main card starts at 2 AEDT. I'd guess the main event will be about 4. Whoever wins the championship will almost certainly take on Edgar in their next fight after he ko'd Mendes in round 1 today

That Damien Maia fight was one of the best grappling fights i have seen in UFC for a long time.

McGregor, known to fight fans as 'The Notorious' was in no mood to elaborate on his decision to retire - and to explain why he did it via Twitter.

He stunned his fans - and critics - many thinking his account had been hacked when they read the message.

After giving Icelandic media group MMA Frettir the cold shoulder, it was left to UFC boss Dana White to fill in what's presumed to be the motivation for the shock announcement - and a move that unless it is resolved will send UFC 200 into chaos.

White said a disagreement over attending a press conference was a sticking point that neither he or McGregor would budge on when he announced he was pulling the sport's brightest star from the biggest card of the year - his rematch with Nate Diaz.

"Conor didn't want to come to Las Vegas and be part of any promotional [work]," White said. "He felt leaving right now would hurt his training. But every other fighter on the card is coming. It doesn't make you exempt. We spend a lot of money on this stuff ...

"Obviously we still have a good relationship with Conor. I respect Conor as a fighter and I like him as a person. But you can't decide not to show up to these things. You have to do it."

It is understood McGregor wanted to miss the press conference because he considered it an unnecessary interruption for his training. His preparation has included travelling to Mjolnir in Iceland.

"Conor did not want to come to Las Vegas and film the commercial or be a part of any of the marketing we have," White said. "He's in Iceland training and that's not possible."

McGregor is only 27 and was said to be poised to make millions from the bout. However, White said he could not reveal whether the jewel in his organisation's crown had actually retired.

"Is Conor McGregor retiring? Only he can answer that question," White said. "I don't know, but he's not fighting at UFC 200."

McGregor's coach, John Kavanagh, appeared to be on board with his fighter's decision.

Kavanagh later posted on social media that he might need to resume his unfinished plumbing apprenticeship to make ends meet in the future.

There has been a suggestion McGregor could run a gym in Ireland but some of his opponents, including Donald Cerrone, believe the retirement is a publicity stunt.

McGregor was in attendance when Portuguese fighter Joao Carvalho was knocked out by Charlie "The Hospital" Ward - a clubmate of McGregor - in the third round of an event called Total Fighting Extreme 1 at the National Stadium in Dublin last week.

Carvalho became "very ill" 20 minutes following the fight after being checked out by doctors a second time and was taken to hospital, where he later died.
