On the eve of his club's semi-final against Melbourne Victory, Brisbane Roar star Luke Brattan chatted exclusively to TWG's David Zdrilic about how he developed the skills that have made him one of the best passers of the ball in the A-League.

Weight of pass is key

“The speed of the ball is crucial to a successful pass. If you’re setting up a shot, you need to hit the ball harder, so your team-mate can re-use the pace on the ball. That’s especially true for a cross. A five metre-pass is different – the power can vary. It depends who’s around, so you must anticipate whether your team-mate will play with one touch or if they have time to control the ball. If they’re more likely to play first-time, I hit the pass more firmly, but still with my instep for accuracy.”

When Brattan mentions instep, I've always thought it meant the shoelace part of the foot, as being different from the inside of the foot.

I've looked it up in the dictionary. It doesn't specify whether it is top, side or bottom of this area, generally termed the instep.

When coaching I've referred to the instep as meaning the shoelace kick, as opposed to the inside of the foot and outside of the foot passing. The instep has been referred to by all football coaches I've known in the past as the shoelace area.

Most people incorrectly (at least as far as i know) call the inside of the foot the instep. The instep is really the outside of the foot.

I think the inside of the foot is usually the best part of the foot to use for most passes, but sometimes, you would need to use the instep or outstep (is that a word), depending on which you need to spin the ball after delivery.

Have we really been reduced to this?? Debating what an instep is?? FFS What has happened when this has become a point of interest?
