Here's a nice graphic breaking down some of the AFL club memberships. No Pet memberships counted. A simple calculation $50 x 800,000 members = $ 40 million which rougly equals about $2.2 million per club. Doing the same for current 75,000 memberships of A-league clubs comes out to about $375,000 per club. As for someone like GWS claiming 13,000 members and having a considerably smaller average attendance. I know they do Canberra memberships which entitles the person to attend all Canberra home games. Similar to a 3 game membership. Makes sense in giving supporters the option. Hard to compare to season long memberships due to the considerable differences.

Similar to a 3 game membership. Makes sense in giving supporters the option. Hard to compare to season long memberships due to the considerable differences. That's a very interesting infographic. However if we really want to compare to a-league we should really only counting full season paying members. So from that infographic i think it would be fair to include "Home", "Home and Away" and AFl/SMA members which totals 512,418. i imagine of that, the membership would be in the vicinity of roughly $150 pa per person. So the total figure is close to $77 Million or $4.28 million per team. I think this would be more accurate. Then you would have to add the other members and their totals. 292,062 x $50 = $14,603,100 which would be roughly another 811k per club in revenue. The first membership figure of 512k is probably most accurate regarding predicting attendances though, as they are the only ones able to watch the games live. So if 85% of members show up at every home game, that would roughly be 24k per game, and would imagine another 5k - 15k as single tickets sold at each game. This would bring their avg attendances into the vicinity of 29k - 39k which is relatively accurate. So our figure of 76k for the a-league thus far needs to be compared to the 512k figure, in order to make any sort of comparison. Then we would have to split it up to get a rough per team avg. And the AFL would be in the vicinity of having roughly 28k full season paying members per club. Once we get a couple of teams hitting the 28k mark we'll be really competing. Also the a-league may be going down a similar route to the afl for all we know. For example i just found out that all paid Sydney FC memberships are included in the tally. Thus their baby and toddler memberships on offer which have just been released will be included.
Again this may cause a disparity between total memberships and viewing figures as i would imagine most member toddlers and member babies won't be attending games. Still a good initiative though from the club. Getting them attached to the club from a very young age.

Coming from Sydney, I know little of AFL, I know of Buddy & Adam Goodes but would struggle to recognise another player at the Swans, however, we should not be comparing AFL memberships (pet members or not) we are not in the same planet. Attendance wise they are one of the biggest sporting competitions in the world

Last week, the Reds' new signing Pablo Sánchez Alberto announced the club was approaching 5,000 members, and that he would give away a signed ball to one lucky member if we surpassed the 5,000 mark. We are pleased to say that we have now reached 5,009 members!
The lucky winner of the signed ball is Michael Brougham. Congratulations Michael.
Thank all of you for joining the Reds as a Member this season. This has been the most successful start to our membership campaign. This time last year (after 8 weeks of sale), we had only 3,300 members. And with 2 months to go before the first home match, we look to be on target to exceed last season's membership tally.

Once Sydney and Brisbane get to 5 figures and Victory and WSW get to 20k and 16k respectively i know we'll be on track for a record season. i still think City have it in them to reach 9k before the start of the season.

Still a sneaky chance to hit 80k by the weekend.
Forever holding out for another 1k from the roar. Hopefully another 1k for the victory by the weekend will have us within 1500.
Expecting the jets, sydney, city to add another 100-200 each, and then it is really down to if the others update or not.
Who knows when wanderers count will next rise from now on....

I remember mentioning it at the time, but is anyone else here worried about what is going to happen to Newcastle?
For the last few seasons their memberships have been HEAVILY subsidised and for a couple of seasons that worked. They reached about 12k members didn't they? Then about 10k etc. Unfortunately the performances on the pitch have been woeful and soon they will have average membership numbers, back to old fully priced numbers of people, but still paying half price for them.
Firstly, that's gotta hurt financially...
Now they will have new owners. What will happen when the now average number of members are suddenly being charged at normal prices like the rest of us? Is that going to cause discontent? Will we see another downward turn in numbers? To the same or to before Tinkler funded numbers?
I remember being told I was an idiot at the time and hopefully I am but it's something worth considering and is going to take a lot of careful maneuvering by potential new owners next season

The memberships aimed for was 111K … the first figure is what was the hoped for membership and the second figure how many more they need to achieve or pass target..
Looking at the numbers below MV, Roar, SFC will met or pass their target WSW are already there.. PG & MC look achievable.
AU, Mariners, Jets & Nux will struggle … guessing the excess by MV & Roar will be less than the short fall of these sides … it’s looking to me a figure between 95 & 102
Adelaide United: 10… 5 Brisbane Roar: 10 … 1 Central Coast Mariners: 10 …6 Melbourne City: 10 … 3 Melbourne Victory: 20 … 3.7 Newcastle Jets: 11 … 4.3 Perth Glory : 8 … 4.2 Sydney FC: 12 … 3.2 Wellington Phoenix: 5….4 Western Sydney Wanderers: 15 … 0
Total 111 … 34

However if Newcastle are able to reach finals this year, any further slump of memberships for next season will be halted. They will probably end up getting similar numbers to this upcoming season but paying more for it. In other words I would assume figures of 8k in memberships. However if the Jets have another terrible season, then memberships will drop even further next year. On top of that prices will rise which will have a double effect on memberships. I can seriously imagine it getting down to 3k. So this season is absolutely crucial for the Jets.

Really starting to slow down. Only another 200 from this time yesterday. But i guess most clubs haven't really updated so who knows.
Can't wait to see FC hitting the 9k figure.

The discussion on membership sales was discussed on WATR forum and one poster made a very good point. At most clubs (definately AUFC) what is the incentive of signing up at this moment? Early bird prices have passed. Existing member renewals have passed. And we have 1.5 months before the season. with a recent dip in advertising added there is no reason why someone should bother getting memberships now rather than in a months time. There will without a doubt be a surge in the 2-3 weeks between the rd of 16 finishing at the start of season.

Last year on the 27/8/13 was like this: 2013/14 Membership Sales Perth - 0,000 Wellington - 2,535 Central Coast - 3,515 Adelaide - 3,653 Brisbane - 4,000 Heart - 4,032 Sydney - 7,655 Newcastle - 8,000 West Sydney - 15,000 Victory - 16,300 Total memberships sold - 64,790 So we're about 14k in front. So 10k up would be a more accurate figure. That is a huge growth nonetheless, roughly 15%. But i have made this point before, we were always going to see a growth at this stage, due to increased member numbers last year. Eg. In 2012/13 if a club had 5,000 members. Then in 2013/14 we would expect something like 80% to renew, totalling 4,000. If the club then ended up with 7,000 members last season. Then in 2014/15 we expect a similar renewal rate, we would see 5,600 members signed up after the renewal period was up. (Thus 1,600 growth at the same point year on year). Essentially what i'm saying is, of the members who have signed up at clubs atm, the vast majority would be renewals and not new members. Hope that makes sense, but basically, we won't know the true growth until the season starts, or shortly after. Nonetheless great signs.
