I would have thought the reason was because it represents maoris and not the whole of NZ. Iwould choose number three.

Interesting video outlining the general principles of flag design, posted by the shortlist council for the Kiwi flag in context for their design competition. Pity they didn't follow their own advice!

I've always liked this alternative design for Australia since I saw it:

Simple, easily reproducible, minimal change, incorporates our sporting colours...

That was one of my favourites too.

At the Bangladesh game the other night the Active Support, whoever they where, had a good alternate Oz flag.

The Australian flag should be green and gold. Those are our colours. Blue is British.

I can't understand why the Kiwis wouldn't want to go with the silver fern flag on a black background. That is already an iconic symbol.

Green and gold are horrible together.

Ochre, blue, red, orange, white, gold. Plenty of colours there without resorting to green and gold together.

Pretty much any of the recent designs I'd support. As long as we get rid of the union jack I'm on board!

Eureka Flag has too many extremist connotations for my liking.

The shame is that this is never going to happen. We can't even get rid of our british head of state, we are never going to change the flag. Especially as the population ages.

Once Will gets in the average person will fall in love with them again. Sigh...

That corporate style wave shape for the green and gold section will be difficult to replicate by hand, won't maintain legibility at smaller sizes and date quickly, not ideal for flag design.

Yeah I always liked this one, makes the green and gold sit well with the design. Chuck the Commonwealth Star back on in the canton like the one Murumbeenz posted and I'm all for it.

I've changed my tune on the flag. I used to be more conservative.

I think we should take a leaf out of the book of some other countries. I believe the flag should be very simple, but have one easily identifiable symbol that instantly says "Australia" i.e. the silhouette of a bounding kanagaroo. I used to think this looks tacky, but look at Canada's flag, red and white with a big fuck off maple leaf on it.

Also, NZ should clearly go with the plain black and white silver fern. It could not be more "New Zealand"

A Kangaroo is our most unique symbol. If you got people from around the world to think of an Australian symbol, I reckon they'd pick a kangaroo. They certainly wouldn't pick a southern cross (present on many flags in the southern hemisphere) or the union jack or red, white and blue.

Something like this but you could tweak the colours with maybe green and gold.

Anyway, thats just my opinion.

Whats top right meant to be?

If you had to pick I feel the third one wins by a bit.

The top right one is a Koru.
The koru (Māori for "loop" ) is a spiral shape based on the shape of a new unfurling silver fern frond and symbolizing new life, growth, strength and peace. It is an integral symbol in Māori art, carving and tattoos. The circular shape of the koru helps to convey the idea of perpetual movement while the inner coil suggests a return to the point of origin.

It's also my favourite of the 4 choices.

Anything with a roo on it is going to look like a qantas logo unfortunately.

As for the comment regards the Solomon islands similarity change the green to ochre or red like this...

or this (with the Southern Cross on the left hand (or pole) side).

The Red Peak design has been re-added to make a final five:

NZ Herald wrote:
Flag referendum: Red Peak design to be added as fifth option - John Key
2:12 PM Wednesday Sep 23, 2015

The Red Peak flag will be added as a fifth option in the flag referendum, Prime Minister John Key has confirmed.

The Government has agreed to pick-up legislation that was put forward by the Green Party this afternoon, which means the Red Peak design will join the four flag alternatives already selected.

"The whole way through I have said my preference is to stick with the process that the officials gave us - accept the four [designs already selected.

"I said I was prepared to go outside of that but I just didn't want people playing games. The Greens have been very, very straight - they have said, here is a straight bill.

"In the end, I'm not wanting to be the one that stands in the way of people having some choice."
