History Of Football In Australia - Bill Murray & Roy Hay

Normally I'd put this book in the Football Books thread. However, this is a definitive history of Australian football, with Frank Lowy writing the precursory Foreword section.

Paradoxically, Murray and Hay talk about how they agree on the positive impact of migrants on football. Yet they disagree on the significance of the games played in the middle of last century, and, the extent and causes of violence in football.

One of the sources for the book is Chris Hudson in Tasmania. I've never heard of, or met him. I'll have to consult a good mate, Tassie's eternal football journo and another football historian , about Hudson.

The illustrations in the book are excellent.=d>

It also covers women's football, but more it is briefly covered than men's football.

Along with Sheilas, Wogs and Poofters, this is a must read for any Aussie football fan. In terms of performance, history evaluates and records performances.

This book draws on about 100 odd people as sources of information.

This includes many who are well known in the general Aussie football milieu - Rale Rasic, Mike Cockerill, Peter Desira, Steve Darby, John Kosmina, Joe Marston, Kyle Patterson, Jack Reilly, Jimmy Rooney, Les Scheinflug and Paul Wade.

I have no financial interest in this venture, but Murray's and Hay's book makes for some very interesting insights into the game of football in Australia.:)
