A KOREAN baseball team has taken creepiness to a new level after announcing it will fill its stadium with cheering robots.

The Hanwha Eagles have dedicated a section of their stadium’s seating to the new robots, which will project messages and photos sent from fans who are unable to make it to games.

The Eagles have branded them “Fanbots” (disturbingly close to Austin Powers’ deadly “Fembots”) and have given them team uniforms and neon message boards.

In an even stranger twist, fans can take “selfies” with the phones and have their image appear on the robots’ faces.

A team video promoting the new technology comes off as something Kim Jong Un might have put together.

“At important moments, the fanbots encourage group cheering,” the video explains.

Former Minnesota Twins pitcher Andrew Albers also features in the video, feigning excitement at one of the most bizarre ideas in recent sport memory.
“Some signs out there in the outfield, it’s a pretty neat idea. It gets the crowd into it and really gets them involved,” Albers says.

It’s hard to see the technology taking off in Australia. How long before someone would manage to get “Paul Gallen’s a tool” or thoughts on the umpires’ intelligence flashing across our screens?

We can only pray that the robots don’t become self-aware and start hunting rival supporters in packs.
