I'd be amazed whether ccm can go anywhere near the finals this season. I know every year they over achieve but they don't have Arnold now... And there squad looks very weak. I see potential for finals in squads like jets and glory. If brockie doesn't fire then phoenix will be in trouble...

Looked decent enough against us, its pre-season etc but they look alright imo, top 6 i think they can scrape in. Edited by MrBrisbane: 13/9/2014 02:29:22 PM

By now, American Samoa must have realised that Australias 22-0 win over Tonga two days earlier was no fluke.

My only comments now would be MV favourites with Jets and Glory to fight out the wooden spoon. The other 7 to fight out for the remaining 5 final spots.

I'm pretty confident in my top two and bottom one. I'd hope Adelaide United finish higher but it will be the most competitive season to date and fifth is still better than 6th. If they make the top four, I'll consider it a successful season because we'll have improved on the previous year. I sense that each season we'll be better than the previous until eventually we're a genuine challenge.
1 and 2 could be in any order, along with 3,4,5 and 7,8 and 9. If City don't make the finals, it'll be the Mariners, hence why I put them as 7th.

1. Mvfc. Have strengthen in the weak areas of def mid & c/h 2. Brfc. Never discount a side who know the system of play blindfolded. 3. Wsw. Defense always gets you points when you don't deserve them. 4. Wpfc. My surprise package, have signed quality players in midfield. 5. Aufc. Will win with style, but the barca style leaks to many goals to challenge, boogard & Malik lol good luck.
6. Mcfc. Have signed a lot of decent player's & with Villa for 10 games that should get points early. 7. Sfc. A lot of proven A league players up front but the defence is still woeful. 8. Pgfc. Same as last season for me, not enough goals in the side. 9. Ccmfc. A lot changes at the club and will probably finally see a drop off. 10. Nujfc basically a new team and will struggle to come together in the 1st half of the season.

Every always underestimates the Mariners. They have a very stable squad this year and a coach with a full preseason. Not like last year with chaos everywhere and they still finished 3rd.

Going out on a limb with Wellington making the finals here I guess, but traditionally they have always been a very hard side to play away and Merrick is a pretty crafty coach. They've also added some quality to the squad, so I reckon this season will be much better for them than last. This season was difficult to pick though, and I could easily see 3 or 4 of my top six not even making the finals. I still don't have much faith in van 't Schip,

CCM still have a decent core left, a bit of 'Arnie' momentum still but since I ranked them 9th as I don't think they'll be a factor, and it's pretty close between the Gyppos and Bogans really. Bottom three could all easily trade spots, Wellington a smokey for the mediocrity stakes if Merrick can't shore up that defence and the imports fails.

Do people really think WSW are going to do that badly? They've just made the ACL final out of season!

Interesting point by Fozz last night. The number of coaching changes last year meant the settled teams look very good as they took advantage. i.e. Bris and WSW
My picks
MVC - too strong SFC - a chance because Arnold values the premiership BR - still a very strong team WSW - to start well but fade after their sustained ACL campaign ADL - very good team but lack depth and will struggle if they have key injuries CCM - settled team but look for some youth breakthroughs and Mane with fitness will be interesting MCI - Villa to show his class and City to start very well but fade quickly with Duff, Mooy and Chapman all disappointing NIX - good attacking options but a bit light in defence PG - Lowe still a problem NUJ - too many changes - rookie HAL coach

1. Adelaide United 2. Sydney FC 3. Melbourne Victory 4. Brisbane Roar 5. Western Sydney Wanderers 6. Melbourne City 7. Central Coast Mariners 8. Wellington Phoenix 9. Perth Glory 10. Newcastle Jets I think Adelaide are going to be the dangerous darkhorse this season. Predicting them to be deadly at home, and pinch some big wins on the road - results wise, if not scorewise. I honestly have NFI how we're going to go this season. Simply put, I haven't felt this amount of optimism in a very long time, and I think it could be dangerous to get too optimistic. I'm too used to going into games preparing for a loss and enjoying the wins. I have us at 2 simply because I think that'd be a fantastic result for us. However I think we're going to drop some serious points if we continue to have players taken by national teams. Get the feeling that's going to be the thorny dagger in our side. Like I said, top 2 would be nice, but I'll settle for top 4. Melbourne Victory are going to be another dangerous team. They always are. I was very impressed with them in our friendly down in Hobart. They seem to be doing the simple things right. Can see them pushing for a top two position from a very early stage. Despite losing Berisha, I wouldn't write off the Roar either. They are still a very dangerous side. They've had an average pre-season, but I think once they get their league match fitness in shape, I think they're going to definitely push the top 4. Anybody who writes off the Roar, or doesn't adequatly prepare for them - especially at Suncorp - could be in for a painful 90 minutes. Personally, as a Sydney fan, I'm hoping to take 3 points away from Brisbane, in Brisbane. The first time in 7 odd years. 5th might seem harsh but I think the Wanderers are going to have one of those seasons where results won't come as easy as they previously have. They'll still be a formidable opponent, especially at home, but can see them dropping points in big games. I think they'll battle it out with Brisbane for a top 4 position. In saying that, Popovic seems to have the ability to get results whatever the team. Melbourne City I think will struggle, but be competitive. I get the feeling they're going to have similar issues in the first 10 or so rounds as what Sydney did with Del Piero. I think most of the team are going to be playing with stars in their eyes, and will struggle to play on the same page as David Villa. Unlike Sydney, City won't be able to get used to the fact they're sharing a dressing room with a superstar, and it's going to get cold and lonely once he leaves. So I'm predicting City to be a flash in the pan for the first 1/3 of the season, and will use their potential good position after Round 10 (or whenever Villa leaves) to ride out the rest of the season. They'll battle it out with the Mariners for top 6. Central Coast. The little train that could. Everybody hates writing them off, because they really do seem to prove everybody wrong and pull wins and grind out results where it looks barren and bleak. I honestly think this is the weakest squad they've had in a while, and unless they start strong, I feel Moss could be out of his depth. The games vs. Sydney are going to be really interesting. The Mariners will know Arnold's style like the back of their hands, but Arnold will know Moss and the Mariners even better than they know himself. I'm predicting those matches to be really interesting and close. Expect a few more classic 3-2 games. Wellington will struggle away from home, and I can't see them dominating too many games. They won't come last, but I can't see them making the top 6 at the expense of any of the above teams. I'd like to see them compete for a top 6, but I think they will struggle again. Ernie Merrick would surely have to be in the mix for one of the first coaches sacked along with Stubbins and Kenny Lowe. Perth may grab a few big wins early on, but inevitably they'll do their normal thing on imploding on themselves, much to the hilarity of the league. I reckon Kenny Lowe is odds on with Stubbins on getting the sack before the seasons out. Like Perth, struggling to see Newcastle make an impact this season. A fit and firing Marcos Flores could make things interesting, I just don't see the Jets having the fire power to make any impact this season. They'll battle with Perth for the wooden spoon, and that fight might come down to the last games.

melbourne and sydney teams to dominate this season should make for epic derbys, BR and AU just to be off slighty but will give the top four a run for their money and for the rest you will be dominated by the top six

Going on the strength of the squads and pre season results this is my ordering
MV SFC AU WSW BR MC CCM WP PG NJ
I think the wheels will fall off CCM this year who also look weaker on paper than last year. Brisbane had the strongest squad on paper at the start of last year and they don't this year, several teams have got stronger and BR have a weaker squad and will really miss BB. WSW may well be the AFC champion club but their squad is weaker as well. Ruka would make a difference to my opinion and would push them higher if he joins WSW MC will do better but the results so far are not encouraging and I expect some of their signings to find the HAL is not a piece of cake compared to where they played last year as they may be expecting...
Looks a long year for NJ and PG WP and CCM may surprise, lets face it CCM seem to find a way, but I cant see it this time.

I'm finding Perth to be pretty underrated in this thread. I expect big things from them this season - they've got a lot of proven talent on their books and I was honestly surprised how good Keogh was in the FFA Cup game v the Jerks.

Can't help but feel they're going to be hot and cold like Sydney have been for the last few seasons. They'll string together some impressive performances, but they'll drop points where it's crucial and that's going to hurt them in the long run of things. Remember, you've also got to factor in the inevitable off-field board dramas's/coach sacking/old boys club shenannigans around January which just isn't going to help things at all.

Central Coast Mariners With Arnie in charge CCM are always going to do decent. But they have simply lost too many talents (Bojic, Ryan, Ibini, Bozanic, Zwaanswijk, McBreen) this year I think they will be at their lowest since 2009. May have problem with their goalkeepers.
And that was just from a quick, lazy look ;)

Adelaide the only team to be tipped for finals by every tipper.
