A reported plan to stream AFL games online rather than broadcast them on television would benefit both fans and the competition, according to Western Bulldogs president Peter Gordon.

The current arrangement for broadcasting AFL games on television ends in 2016.

The Australian newspaper has reported that the AFL is considering keeping the broadcast rights to one game per week in any new deal.

The league would stream the games direct from its website using in-house resources.

Mr Gordon said the internet is changing the way people watch sports broadcasts.

"Good on the AFL for keeping pace with it," Mr Gordon told 774 ABC Melbourne's Jon Faine.

"We're at the dawn of an age now... where you can actually think about bypassing traditional TV stations and watching things on your TV direct from the internet."

He said there are now more than a million people using their mobile devices to watch AFL matches.

Mr Gordon defended the AFL's right to make as much money from matches as it can.

"Certainly the need to maximise the revenue is always part of running a good business," Mr Gordon said.

"I think that the mindset is what's the best way for us to use these technologies for the benefit of the competition and the benefit of consumers."
