Last year I had an U7 and U11 team so I'll add my 2c.

U7
I did the Grassroots Certificate at the beginning of the year so I was up-to-date with what the latest preferred methods.
Not sure what the actual KPI's should be but I set out to improve each of the kid's abilities in:
- striking the ball
- dribbling
- passing
- start to work as a team (ie get them to pass a bit)

I totally discouraged the big boot upfield. Unfortunately the kids were beaten on more than one aoccasion by the kid that could boot it from half way and score. The kids get very disheartened by this and I could tell they looked at me sometimes like "you told us not to do that but they are". It's a tough one to swallow but I know it will benefit them in the long run but a 7 year old doesn't know that.

U11
The team I had were in the E's so these kids weren't technically gifted or fast etc. This is the norm for kids further down the divisions. Most of them had never had a coach who really taught them how to play and give them proper training. I did the Skill Training Certificate at the beginning of the year so I had some idea what to teach them and how. So I set out to teach them per the program except we only did 1 1hour session per week so I did what I could in the time. So essentially the goal for the year was to improve:
- striking the ball
- running with the ball
- 1 v 1
- passing
- 2 touch

At the same time I tried to get them to support each other and start to make runs and put through balls into space for runners. It took 3/4's of the season before I found a good formation for them based on their skills (1-3-2-2-1). It was good enough to get us into 3rd in the comp, into the semi's, win every game there and win the grand final.

The kids and parents were astounded at the improvement in the kids abilities and the way they played and everyone had a ball.

They are all backing up again this year.

(Note: we play in the Sutherland Shire association who do have semi's etc for U11's).
