I've gotta say, I'm a Triple J listener myself (except for when they try to talk and be funny) and I think this hijacking is the best thing that could happen, given the previous misgivings about the station's editorial cliquism I posted in a previous thread, the current regime at the J's have two options: remove Swift from the poll and lose all #legitimacy as "the world's biggest music democracy" or let her win and lose all #legitimacy as hipsters who only profess the same six songs a month that those in the studio and their industry buddies want to play. Hopefully the result is a more open Triple J, accountable to it's stakeholders.

Taylor Swift shakes up Triple J's Hottest 100 poll

Australian of the Year … Taylor Swift? Not quite, but the online brawl over a campaign to have Swift's smash Shake It Off included in Triple J's Hottest 100 poll has taken a new turn, with favourites for the gong, Canberra duo Peking Duk, posting a video on Saturday admitting they're closet Taylor fans. Reuben Styles and Adam Hyde speak of watching the ebb and flow of the voting as it was hijacked via a campaign to have Swift's hit included in the polling. "Taylor Swift's gonna win … and if she does good on her. I kinda hope she does." That said, Hyde does lament the distortion in the voting. "There's trolls who are voting because it's funny and that's the bit where it gets a bit, 'Oh come on'." The duo say they will spend Australia Day having a barbie, sinking beers and listening to the countdown. "We'll wait for Taylor Swift to take out top spot. I've got love for T. Swift." But can she do it? Latest check of the odds has Swift third favourite, behind Peking Duk and Chet Faker.

Well played by the Peking Duk lads, good sports.

Taylor Swift for Triple J Hottest 100: Counter campaign emerges
January 16, 2015
Michael Koziol

Following a grassroots effort to lob Taylor Swift's Shake it Off to the top of the Triple J Hottest 100, a counter-campaign is underway to disallow the song from the annual countdown.
A campaign under the hasthag #Tay4Hottest100 – initiated by Mark Di Stefano, a reporter at the listicle website Buzzfeed – has seen Shake it Off catapult to second-favourite according to a leading online betting agency.

On Friday morning it was paying $4.25 to come in at number one, behind Australian duo Peking Duk and their track High, which was paying $2.20.
But the movement has rattled some Triple J listeners, who see the incursion of Swift's catchy pop hit into the more alternative Hottest 100 as sacrilege.
Perth's Hayden Davies, who describes himself as a lifelong Triple J diehard, has started a change.org petition calling on the station to prevent Shake it Off from appearing on the chart. He argued the song had never been played on Triple J and was more akin to the Top 40 sounds heard on stations such as Nova or Kiis FM.

"I am all for people's opinions and tastes in music, but Taylor Swift's Shake it Off should not be on there," he wrote.
"It would ruin the Hottest 100 and Triple J for a lot of its loyal listeners, plus half the people voting for it have not even a clue what Triple J is."
But as of Friday morning the petition, which had been running for two days, had garnered just 50 supporters.
The backlash has also begun to permeate social media, where debates raged not just about the spirit of the Hottest 100 but the quality and meaning of Swift's music.

Quote:
HughWilliam @Hughghhghghh
She's white, conventionally attractive, wealthy, adored in the western world. Strange choice to lead an argument about non inclusion.

The attempted #Tay4Hottest100 putsch, which began only on Tuesday, will need to overcome a significant amount of early votes (polls have been open since December 15) if it is to swing Swift into pole position. It could also face technical difficulties: the rules allow Triple J to exclude a song if it has benefited from "competitions or commercial campaigns".
And there is a strong likelihood that among Swift supporters, the vote could split between Shake it Off and Blank Space, the second single from her album 1989. Both songs reached No.1 in Australia and the US.
Still, the station bills the countdown as "the world's biggest musical democracy" in which the will of the masses must be respected. Voting closes as of midnight Sunday, eastern standard time and the Hottest 100 is revealed live on January 26 – Australia Day – on Triple J.
Many listeners host parties, barbecues and other get-togethers for the annual event. Almost 1500 parties have been registered in 48 countries, according to the Triple J website.
Last year the most popular song was Riptide by Melbourne-based indie singer-songwriter Vance Joy, which ironically was covered by none other than Swift late last year.

"I am all for people's opinions and tastes in music, but any opinions or tastes in music that aren't my own shouldn't be played on a taxpayer funded radio station based on a democratic poll."

And the guy tweeting using the privilege argument to feel good about excluding her. Easily enough for me to join #teamTay.

Delusional Triple J supporter sends death threat to fan voting for Taylor Swift in the Hottest 100
JANUARY 16, 2015 2:27PM

Haters gonna hate ... Taylor Swift has angered some unstable Triple J fans by existing and making music people like.

THE Taylor Swift for Triple J’s Hottest 100 crusade has turned ugly with a fan of the Shake It Off hit maker receiving death threats.
Deluded Triple J listeners have also compared Swift fans to ISIS, claiming both need to be wiped out.
Melbourne’s Eliza Day, who helped start the Swift campaign two weeks ago, was told “I hope you die a slow, painful death” last night by an Instagram user called dermy.wormy.
“When I first saw those Instagram comments I just shrugged, turned Shake It Off on and danced around my house singing “haters gonna hate hate hate hate hate ...”,” an unscathed Day said this morning.
“I have blocked the people who made the comments. Cyber bullying is never ever OK. Like, ever.”

Cyber bullies ... Instagram users hide behind anonymous profiles to spew venom

However she said the offensive actions have rallied people to react against the Instagram pest.
“I was talking to some friends yesterday and asking if they were going to vote. They said that although they don’t mind Taylor Swift they had no plans to vote. For her or anyone. But following the unpleasant comments left on my Instagram account they said they would absolutely be voting now as a mark of solidarity against cyber bullying.
“Up until now I’ve been in a Swiftie utopia where everyone is on board and being super supportive. I voted for Taylor a few weeks ago, and anyone who knows me or follows me on social media knows I am also a fierce and loyal supporter of many lesser known bands and artists, so I think most people understand that I simply voted for the songs I loved. They just happened to be by someone well known.”
Day said she cannot understand the hate and anger that has surrounded the campaign, which was started in jest by Buzzfeed and has snowballed over the last few days.
“The biggest misconception is that being a Taylor Swift fan and being an avid Triple J listener are mutually exclusive. While it’s true in some cases, I and many other people fall into both categories. I’m passionate about the music I love but I certainly don’t resent anyone for disagreeing with my tastes, nor can I comprehend wishing death upon someone over it.”

Seems a bit strong ... One of the offensive death threats.

Voting for the Hottest 100 closes this Sunday at midnight, with the results aired on Australia Day.
Ironically while the thought of Swift infiltrating the Hottest 100 has alarmed many ardent Triple J listeners, Melbourne’s Vance Joy, who won the Hottest 100 with Riptide last year, will open for Swift in concerts across the US, UK and Australia this year.
Swift’s best friend, Lorde, was No. 2 on last year’s Hottest 100 and Milky Chance, who are tipped to poll well with Stolen Dance, covered Shake It Off for Triple J’s Like a Version last week.

While Shake It Off was not played on Triple J last year it, like any other song released last year, can be voted for if entered manually.
Station manager Chris Scadden said on Wednesday: “We supply a list of over 2000 songs that have been played on Triple J in 2014. People are welcome to add songs manually to their voting shortlist and those votes count exactly the same as anything voted from the Triple J list.”
Some fans on Twitter were curious if one of the rules — “Triple J reserves the right to remove artists from the list who have benefited from competitions or commercial campaigns that incentivise fans to vote for them” would make Swift ineligible.
One fan has started an online petition titled “Do not allow Taylor Swift to feature in the annual triple j Hottest 100” which cites the above rule and adds Swift’s songs being heard on Triple J would “ruin the pure essence of triple j, sure we have had songs like Thrift Shop and Pretty Fly For A White Guy win, however this (sic) were at least played on triple j at least once and were listenable before it became overplayed to death” and “If wanted to listen to this song, I would not be listening to triple j. I would listen to NOVA or a TODAYFM program.”
Triple J’s publicist declined to comment on the potential impact of the voting clause and said the station has no more comments to make on the Taylor Swift story.

The reaction to the voting for Shake It Off (as well as Blank Space and other Swift songs) highlights how passionate Triple J listeners are towards the station — a loyalty commercial radio spends millions each year trying to foster.
Swift dominated commercial radio last year, with Shake It Off the year’s third highest selling single.
Another favourite this year is Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’ Uptown Funk. Some have questioned whether if it was a solo Bruno Mars song, not including Triple J favourite Ronson, the national station would playlist it.
In the past both Madonna and Kylie Minogue have lodged songs in the Hottest 100, while ‘cool’ mainstream acts such as Beyonce and Drake have never had a song chart in the poll.

Even betting agencies are trying to make money out of the campaign now.
Shake It Off has gone from $251 to be the favourite to win the Hottest 100 for Sportsbet today.
The company have been following the campaign on Twitter and claim they stand to lose $50,000 if Swift somehow became the first woman to ever win the Hottest 100.
“We have a novelty trader who specialises in this type of thing,” Sportsbet’s Shaun Anderson said. “A lot of research is done at the beginning including looking at charts etc to set the initial market. But the punters really play a big part and we respond to where the money goes. Hence Taylor has been so well backed we have had to cut her price.”

I read an article claiming they had but now cant find any others to support so it probably hasn't been. Not that I think for a second Kingsmill will let it happen, no matter the votes.

To be fair though I'm pretty sure there is a clause that they can exclude a particular song or artist in the event of a public campaign or movement to compromise the countdown.

I resent the notion that jjj is just for hipsters and it's only hipsters being pissed off by this. Australia Day is arguably the best drinking day of the year and the hottest 100 countdown is a huge part of that, personally I just don't see the point in compromising a good thing that many enjoy because people think it will be funny to piss off some hipsters. Also, I think Taylor Swift is a c*nt so I'd probably be a tad less bothered if it were anyone else.

Most hipsters I talk to when driving Uber (at least 80% of Uber riders are Fitzroy hipsters) hate TripleJ because it's too mainstream.

I love the countdown and absolutely hate Taylor swift, but it's hard not to smile seeing some of the comments on their facebook posts. So many that listen to jjj are far to elitist about the countdown these days. No matter what gets number 1 most people will complain. I just hate the people that complain when a commercial picks up a song that jjj plays, as if they have some right to music that the rest of the public don't.

I haven't got a problem with a pop song winning triple J hottest 100. Most of the winners these days are very "poppy" anywhere. Its almost always a "girl friendly" song that wins anyway.

But doesn't the song have to have been played on the station throughout the year? I thought her song had never been played and that's why she's ineligible.

According to one of the articles I posted:

the rules allow Triple J to exclude a song if it has benefited from "competitions or commercial campaigns".

Seeing as the online campaign was clearly not itself commercial in nature then that rule won't wash.

I, too, was upset about Gangam style's non-inclusion during its year of dominance.

You can vote for a song that wasn't played on Triple J throughout the year, you just have to physically enter the details in yourself and add it to the list.

Half of what JJJ plays these days would be classified as pop anyway. Seriously I can't tell if i'm listening to Nova or Triple J sometimes.

She wasn't played on triple J, she doesn't deserve to be there. This has nothing to do with hipsters or mainstream music.

For what it's worth, I've never voted in it before. I've never really listened to triple J unless I'm in a mates car and that's the station its tuned too. However, this year I'll vote for Tay Tay, and hope she wins, and I'll relish in the butthurt of mad hipsters who will probably burn down the majority of Newtown & Enmore in anger.

I grew up listening to the most obscure bands etc, that were apparently on jjj, I never got onto that train for whatever reason, infact my car radio is either on an AM station or IPOD, this year will be the first time of doing something that will include the countdown cause Ive always gone to the victory Australia day game, everyone has been posting their picks on fb, can honestly say I've never heard of any of these musicians. I must be old. I love this taylor swift thing, I fucking hate these hipsters, I don't get it, one of my greatest loves is craft beer and that scene is now being overrun by stupid beards, bad hair cuts and man buns. To me that all seems a bit similar to the punk movement where everyone professes their individuality by dressing the same, listening to the same music and calling anyone out who isn't the same as them!

What people don't realise is that the term hipster now describes a different group of people. When the term became prolific 5 or 6 years ago, the to described a certain dress style and a few other things to go with it, but for the most part, those people now dress differently. Most GENUINE hipsters now dress poorly in an ironic sense.

Basically because the indie fashion sense just became the norm for most young people, hipsters have move to ironically dressing in very plain fashion. You'll probably also find that triple J's style of music is pretty popular right now, as it's moved away from indie rock and folk to electro pop. That transition has met pop music on commercial stations half way, so that you get the likes of 'Peking Duck' who are loved by both a triple J audience and a mainstream audience.

Most people who Coin the term 'hipster' are just so far off the beat that it's not even funny.

I love JJJ but I love #bantz even more, so I am so happy with both the fact that the Hottest 100 is getting trolled, but also that so much publicity is going towards the Hottest 100 - even more than normal!

Yeah and Vertigo by U2 made the countdown with out ever being played on JJJ.

Mind you there were no organised campaigns backing those songs.

I like that swift song, but I also see the integrity of the count down is important. Her fans voting for her are not going to be listening to JJJ and even on the day wont listen.
They would just be waiting for a twitter update saying they had won, So I support JJJ culling her for that reason.

Ha ha, Just remembered some 'HIPSTER' (tm) band covered Taylor Swifts shake it off, only 2 weeks ago for like a version.....?!?

Ironically while the thought of Swift infiltrating the Hottest 100 has alarmed many ardent Triple J listeners, Melbourne’s Vance Joy, who won the Hottest 100 with Riptide last year, will open for Swift in concerts across the US, UK and Australia this year.
Swift’s best friend, Lorde, was No. 2 on last year’s Hottest 100 and Milky Chance, who are tipped to poll well with Stolen Dance, covered Shake It Off for Triple J’s Like a Version last week.

Most major artists who will feature in the countdown have been using their facebook and websites to campaign for votes so I don't think they can rule her out on that front.

So much this, it's thrown around way too liberally. I feel like the whole hipster hate movement is just a massive bandwagon/social media fad that few people really understand what a hipster is or why they are supposed to hate them, it's just easy to call something or someone hipster and criticize because everyone else is.

JJJ is really popular these days and I'd wager that the percentage of actual hipster's that make up the audience would not be much at all tbh.

Also at the end of the day they are huge supporter of New australian music.
It is a hard line for them, they play a diverse range of music which means you are going to hear things you will hate amongst the things you love, but the moment they start catering to one audience is the moment you whack an Austradio sticker on them and they become a commercial station.

Also I am far from a hipster and alot of people I know are and we all grew up on JJJ and still listen.

Said like a true hipster ;)

But hipsters have always despised it when something they associate themselves becomes popular, and usually very quickly disassociate themselves with it.

I agree with your point about the word being misused and overused. I find the term bogan is used just as badly

Take 40 wrote:
Taylor Swift allegedly disqualified from Hottest 100 because of KFC social media post
20 January 2015

Taylor Swift has apparently been disqualified from Triple J's Hottest 100 because of a social media post made by KFC which used the #Tay4Hottest100 hashtag.

To recap: Last week, Buzzfeed started a grassroots campaign to get Taylor Swift's song 'Shake It Off' to #1 on Triple J's Hottest 100 - the annual countdown of the biggest hipster songs of the past year.

Most people thought the article was cute when they first saw it... but that was before Taylor became the second favourite to win the comp! Read more on that HERE.

Yesterday, however, ex-Triple J presenter Angela Catterns claimed that Tay Tay had already been disqualified from the music poll!

Speaking on a panel for ABC's The Drum, she said 'You probably know that there was a push to get a Taylor Swift song in [the Hottest 100], which has now been disqualified because a fast food chain became involved in the whole process'.

The fast food chain she's talking about is KFC, and the way they got involved was by posting this seemingly innocent and informal competition on Facebook:

The rules of the Hottest 100 state that '[Triple J] reserves the right to remove artists from the list who have benefited from competitions or commercial campaigns that incentivise fans to vote for them.'

The good news: KFC does not explicitly tell people to go and vote for Taylor Swift in the ad, so there is a good chance that Angela jumped the gun in announcing the disqualification.

The bad news, however, is that there is every chance Triple J may choose to disqualify the song because of KFC.

There are a whole number of problems with this, mainly because KFC was not acting as an agent of Taylor herself.

What if KFC decided that tomorrow they were going to run a similar Facebook competition with Peking Duk instead of Taylor Swift? Does that mean that Peking Duk would automatically be disqualified, even though they had no part in the actions of KFC?

Punters aren't able to bet on the Hottest 100 currently, but at last look, Taylor was the second favourite on Sportsbet, and the fifth favourite on Centrebet to take out the Hottest 100 title.

Certainly could provide JJJ with their out, soft though it is.

The whole hottest 100 is a joke now anyway. There use to be a good mix of stuff but it seems very genre biased. The best metal/punk albums of the year can't even get a song on the list while you've got up to 10 songs of the same shit pop group listed. I don't listen to the radio anymore but it seems JJJ went the way of the commercial radio stations there really isn't any difference.

This is why I cannot see the fuss with Taylor Swift? Look at the top 10 from last year. She fits right into this list.

Metal and punk bands still get a shout on the J's. it just depends on how the voting goes. BMTH and Karnivool always get a go when they have stuff out. If you look at the lists over the last few years, it's decently balanced.

This year though, Chet Faker will destroy it and rightly so. His only challenger is Mark Ronson with a very late charge...

Also why is Chet Faker rightly destroying it?

I honestly don't rate his music that much.

To be fair, his last album was infinitely better than the one that is getting all the plaudits (my real opinion), but his new album has been the most popular with Jsters this year by far.

Taylor Swift’s ‘Shake It Off’ Hasn’t Been Disqualified From Triple J’s Hottest 100…Yet
Written by Nastassia Baroni on 21st January, 2015

It’s been a controversial few days for Taylor Swift in Australia, likely unbeknownst to Swift herself. The eligibility for her song Shake It Off rank in triple j’s Hottest 100 being called into question, and now a former triple j presenter has retracted her earlier claims that the Shake It Off singer had been disqualified from the competition altogether.

Earlier this week, Angela Catterns made the assertion that Swift was no longer eligible to place in the Hottest 100, despite an online push from fans, because a “fast food chain” had become involved in the process, in defiance of triple j’s voting rules.

However, reports Fairfax, Catterns retracted her comment on her 2UE afternoon show on Wednesday, saying she “may have spoken too soon, that hasn’t happened yet … that’s not my call”.

“Triple j is not saying anything,” Catterns continued. “But as I understand it if there’s a commercial involvement it defeats the purpose of having a listener-driven poll. I still believe with a fast food chain jumping on the bandwagon it’s a classic example of the commercialisation of youth culture.”

She later added that she believes “it’s a bit of a corruption of the whole [countdown] to have her on there”.

While Catterns never elaborated on which fast food chain she was referring to, KFC had posted a Facebook image week of Swift with the hashtag #tay4hottest100. KFC have since removed the post and clarified they did not intend to incentivise followers to vote for Swift in the Hottest 100 poll. Voting in the Hottest 100 closed on Sunday.

Triple j have thus far stayed silent on the issue, but a leaked email reportedly from station manager Chris Scaddan has surfaced, informing triple j staff not to publicly (or even privately) discuss the social media campaign to get Taylor Swift’s Shake It Off into the Hottest 100 of 2014. “Don’t worry… It will all become clear when we get to the countdown next Monday,” the email continues.

Triple j’s Hottest 100 of 2014 countdown begins at its traditional time of midday on Australia Day, Monday, 26th January.

Fucking cowards staying totally silent then hiding the announcement on the day in an article with an unrelated headline.

Love Chet. Is amazing live and thought that would be his highest song. Amazing to think he wrote and produced the whole album himself. Thought Peking Duck would get 1 but glad they didn't. Sis might've actually been a victim of mainstream success, almost guarantee chandelier goes higher if it wasn't absolutely flogged on mainstream radio to the point many J listeners hated it.

I love this "musical democracy" as much as the Democratic Republic of North Korea loves democracy

Good to see that Triple J banned Taylor Swift so they could provide a launching pad for up and coming artists like Bruno Mars & Foo Fighters, would've been a travesty if they'd missed out

Well the person who would've missed out had they not disqualified Swift would've been an 18 year old female rapper from Adelaide.

As for the Foo Fighters, they have their rightful consideration for the 100 as a legacy artist, as did Uptown Funk which got a shitload of playtime on JJJ this year, Swift not so much.

As they wrote in the "8 reasons you won't hear Taylor Swift" article, if they let this one go they open the voting up to any song released that pop-bandwagoners want to jump on next year for the sake of da trollz. Someone mashes up Crazy Frog feat. Rick Astley and releases it, number 1 hit lol!

Was only going to get to #12 anyway apparently.

Hipsters don't want their party crashed

They want to listen to their type of 'music'

Once revolutionary, 'alternative' and 'cool', its amazing how tepid and bland it becomes when the alternative penetrates the mainstream

Its like the political pov triple j harbours, believing they should legalise marijuana every 6 weeks, because they feel the need to run with that story

Its the other side, being the other side, for the sake of being the other side

Now, get a haircut and get a real job!

Yeah pretty much, it's Triple J's hottest 100, if it's been played on the station it can get a vote.
