Tim Cahill could be set to move to China, with local reports claiming the Socceroos star is on the verge of a switch to Shanghai Shenhua.

Cahill, who scored three goals in Australia's march to Asian Cup success, still has a year remaining on his $US3.5 million ($A4.52 million) contract with New York Red Bulls, but the club left him unprotected for last December's MLS expansion draft.

Teams were allowed to prevent 11 players from their squads discussing terms with other clubs and Cahill was not included.

This means there is unlikely to be much resistance from the Red Bulls if Cahill requested a release and Shenhua, who are coached by Frenchman Francis Gillot, are reported to have tabled a $3 million offer for a single season.

Young Western Sydney striker Tomi Juric was a target for Shenhua last month after the Wanderers accepted an offer from the Chinese Super League (CSL) outfit.

But the 23-year-old Socceroo rejected the approach on the advice of Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou.

Wellington's Nathan Burns, who was part of the Asian Cup winning squad, was also a target, but Shanghai powerbrokers were put off by his $1.5 million price tag.

Will go down hill fast in China like the middle east no one really goes there and improves. He deserves the cash but you have to wonder playing EPL for almost a decade then 2 as a marquee for NYRB shouldn't he already have a ton of cash ?

its a similar timezone where the league is technical, fast paced and has similar conditions to what he will encounter in international football. He is unlikely to go down hill as quickly as he would in the middle east
