This article shows how far we have to go to take on the afl. 1 in 28 Australia's is an afl member. With the total over 800,000. Daunting figures. http://www.9news.com.au/national/2015/08/26/11/58/port-adelaide-membership-higher-than-crows-for-first-time

I wouldn't worry too much about comparing with the AFL. The league has been around for well over a century now. I'm sure the A-League's memberships would be sky high too if it started in the late 1800s.

Besides, the oval stadiums are often far bigger than the rectangular ones. Even if Melbourne Victory and City were the two biggest teams in the country of any code, they'd still be capped at around 25k members.

Roar membership is down by about two thirds on the same time last year. Roar cracked 10,000 members by September 16 last year. Brisbane had the third-highest tally last season with 12,113 members a jump from 8,112 in 2013-14

Given the number of fans being vocal on Twitter and Facebook I’d say about 1/3 are waiting for the Bakries to go and the other 1/3 were unlikely to renew anyway given last years form. If the Bakties hang around it’s reasonable to assume that we might struggle to crack 5,000 members even with the lite options due for launch in September. If the Bakries go we might hit the 8k mark before season kick off

Can't imagine the Bakries sticking around. If it wasn't for Newcastle I reckon they'd be gone by now. Hopefully Newcastle will sell and then the FFA can get Brisbane sorted. Big market and lots of potential. It's not a team we'd want to see go under.

I know NJ had them last year. See link below for Marco Flores' best contribution all season.

There's no doubting that the AFL has a huge number of memberships. But they count everything, interstate members (no access to games), baby/toddler memberships, pet memberships, 3 game memberships, 5 game memberships, 7 game memberships etc. Nobody we'll ever know the true numbers, but I'm sure they've fudged to some extent! Collingwood supposedly has 80k memberships, yet they've had numerous games this year where 30-40k have showed up, including the other teams' supporters. That's not even 50% of members attending! If anyone ever thinks the entire 800,000 are season ticket holders they're kidding themselves...

Spot on. The afl has huge figures regardless but the 800k is taking all membership types into account. If we were to do the same our figures would probably be 150k. Either way a still long way off.

Question is how much of the ago figure is based on purely season ticket holders? I would say the figure would be closer to 500k

There was actually an article in the papers a few months back that showed the full time member numbers of AFL teams compared to member numbers they release to the public. I can't recall specific numbers but i do remember the gap being a lot larger than i had expected. The Swans say they have 40k+ members but I'm fairly sure their full time member numbers are under 20k.

This. The AFL is a juggernaut not only in numbers, but in PR spin as well.

Melbourne City has passed the 6K mark now.
May not be a lot some for but with the non villa hype this year to hit 6k at this point is not a bad effort.

Victory need just 2,096 more to beat last year's record. Anyone know what AAMI Park's membership limit is? Or would they then just allow 'Etihad only' members?

Well, in this number are 5 game memberships which are Etihad only.

As far as I understand it, and based on response from the club and the membership pack received, there is no limit for AAMI, just a few games that are fully ticketed that you'll need to reserve your seat for if you are a GA member or you'll miss out.

Both mariners and phoenix have moved less than 100 spots each in the space of 10 days.

Phoenix adding lots of value to the a-league as usual... But fair enough the phoenix didn't make the finals last year...oh wait.

Gee I hope the Nix find a smaller stadium. The cake tin with a capacity of 35k isn't going to look very nice with 1500 members, 4000 walk ins and 20 travelling fans.

i never thought sydney fc would count pet memberships, the afl on the other hand i am not too sure about, it will be interesting to see how City and the Jets end up membership wise, how many members did Adelaide United have compared with City at the start of last season?

City aren't going to get the same numbers as last season because Villa sin't coming and thus the media support just isn't there. I recall full page spreads last year. You will be lucky to get a a two inch column in the herald sun on a daily basis this season. CFG really needed to put their foot down and make a real statement, but unfortunately they didn't and instead kept the marquee and staff. The only great signing was Mooy as he's a proven talent still on the up.

Only NT is sold out at AAMI so far, NT and ST at etihad is sold out

I don't think the club has come out and said it publicly, as they're probably waiting to see how the membership sales go, but I've heard that our membership cap at AAMI is 26,500.
Let's see what happens, we could probably get to that number this season...
