couldn't watch second half as i decided being fresh for work is more important. anyway between patients, have to say even if Vietnam was our weakest opponent I was happy with that. Most of our time in the first half our play out from the back was good, neat, tidy. We had some nice combination play in the final third, I was really glad with that. A few times we got caught out playing from the back but dealt with the high press a lot better than I have seen in the past.

interested in seeing the second half.

unless UAE draw with vietnam, we are likely to come second in our group with a win over Jordan.

Good to hear, Jono.

You've been underwhelmed recently.

At CB position, playing players not playing for clubs, regularly like the injured Ansell and Chapman, or the unavailable Irvine, with Donachie and Gallifiuaco, is desperate. I wonder if we can play Geria as CB? He has been decent for MV at CB when needed.

In this game I also noted one of my first preferences on the team sheet based on form - Brandon O'Neill. A great ball winner in the rough and tough HAL and a player who keeps distribution simple. How did he go?

If we beat Jordan, we'd have to rely on Vietnam to take points off the UAE to finish on top.

O'Neill was vital, one of the most important players in the first half. You need someone like that in your team. =d>

Just based on the HAL I thought O'Neill should be one of the first selected. He has been keeping Tavares and Dimi out at times of SFC.

I rate Antonis and Brillante highly rated on what they've done in the past, but neither have played a lot of football recently.

Brillante has regressed too from what he was. O'Neill is better at winning the ball than what either of Antonis or Brillante were in the HAL. So is Melling who is out of the squad.

Amini looked superb on the ball on a couple of occasions against UAE. Unfortunately, his work rate and involvement in between those classy actions was poor though.

Amini going forward is fun to watch, I never really bought the hype around him in the HAL. Always felt far too incomplete. He still does at 23. He has great vision, disguises his through balls really well. Looks a little too casual at times. He is not at the level offensively to have his poor work rate / defensive work ignored.

Agreed on Melling, enjoyed his play in the past two seasons. Breaks up play well, decent passing, rarely coughs up posession stupidly, plays it simple. Can read a future play well and place himself into the other sides passing lanes.

Never rated Brillante, Antonis showed glimpses of being a good player in the future in the HAL. He never looked to me as if he wants to be the best, or wants to strive to be the best. Possibly lack of belief. I thought the move to PAOK was a little too early. The Greeks have a decent league, some good foreign players who play for National Teams. Not easy to break into leagues like that.

South Korea to play Iraq the day before we play Jordan. A draw or win for Korea will see them top their group and likely play us in the QF. (Though hoping for the Viets to pinch a point off UAE)

It is better for us (Korea), Australia, and Asia that we dont meet each other in quarterfinals. I hope that Australia beat Jordan and Vietnam beat UAE. Of course we come frst in group C.

Gee i hope Vidmar doesnt change the team again.

The team we had in the last game is probably our best line up we have, maybe Galloway for Geria but that's about it.

Don't see the problem with using Taggart up front. Although....

How good is Maclaren chesting the ball down off of diagonal passing.

Can't imagine Tagz doing th@ stuff and peeling off the shoulders looking for as much action as possible. Probably the problem with Taggart he's always looking for easy scraps. Who else is good that's been sitting.

Can't say much about Brilliante. The guy looked 90 minutes of complete shite, this guy absolutely fucking amazes all who hope he comes good. If I was him I'd starting by kicking myself in the scrotum a few times, shaving th@ shitty beard off and start playing mans ball

I didnt really want to start a completely new thread for this, but, can anyone outline the process that occurs once the AIS FFA COE players go through after completing the initial 2 years of attending?
Will they be approached by clubs in Aus and possibly overseas?

Jamal Reiners was with the squad initially but is now with Perth, is that because he was possibly the most outstanding player did he want out or even other wise? if anyone can clarify this process that would be appreciated

Not 100% sure but from my understanding during the final 6 mths of their tenure ais management try and place them with a- league clubs. Part of their contract states ais must assist in finding clubs for them. Obviously the ones catching the eye would get snapped up first as the a-league clubs have been playing against them in youth league for the past two years.

Looking at past ais players some go on to a league NYL, some to lower age groups to a -league clubs that have youth systems playing in state league( like under 18s )and some to state league clubs. Some try their luck overseas.

Brillante is a shadow of the player he was a year or so ago when he was playing for the senior Socceroos. Just goes to show overseas sojourns often don't go well for players of his age relative to playing regular HAL football particularly going to Serie A. Needed a few more seasons of HAL to consolidate.

Now I've seen the replay I wonder if Vidmar actually watches HAL games?

HAL regulars at senior level performed well against Vietnam.

O'Neill - was immense, as I predicted he would be. How did Viddy play Brillante and Ugarkovic in front of him? O'Neill really hurt Vietnam winning plenty of hard balls, playing the simple pass, and even some killer passes. His decision-making was top notch.

In Vietnam's pressing of our defensive line, they often left him unmarked. If the defensive line got the ball to O'Neill it was usually played forwards.

Deng - not sure we can call him a HAL regular, but was also immense. His penalty box defending was superb. How did Vidmar play Gallifuoco in front of him? His injury could be decisive.

Geria- very good apart from being dribbled around all ends up in the last few seconds. Has played regular HAL football whilst Galloway has been on the pine. Why didn't Vidmar play him instead of Galloway?

Borrello - good game against some very rough and tough defending.

McLaren - profited from better service from better teammates. Played well.

Hoole - far better on the left than Pain. Displayed adaptability.

Even with out the European players not released, imagine what A Oz could've done if Viddy had played and selected more HAL regulars like Mauk, Melling, Retre, Blackwood et al.

How old are McGing, Elsey and Poscielero?

Playing players like Edwards, Galloway, Donachie, and Pain seems bemusing as they aren't good enough ATM, or as is most likely the case, have not played enough regular football after recovering from injury in the last few years, whilst others have.

Thought Vietnam were very impressive and have improved out of sight.

According to Nickk they have some sort of flash , French academy based on Clairefontaine.

I was astonished how physical they were. I thought they were better than the UAE. They would have beaten the Oz team who played UAE.

Vidmar should send out an SOS to Retre and Melling.

If Deng is injured, it might be prudent to play Geria as CB and use Retre as RB.

He could use Melling as a twin DM with O'Neill and risk pushing the full backs up higher to attack. If Jordan is as physical as the seniors there is no better player than Melling for the rough stuff in midfield. His distribution is decent too.

Amini showed class on the ball at times, but his ball winning is poor. His workrate must improve.

Gersbach is great going forwards, but his 1v1 defending needs to improve.

By having the rugged Melling in to partner O'Neill as midfield screeners , Gersbach can attack more whilst two screeners in a defensive midfield triangle can cover for the full backs providing overlapping width in attack.

Ryan Edwards - how is this guy captain? Is Viddie an old mate of his Dad Alistair's?

Edwards composure on the ball is not good enough and he is not a good enough ball winner either. His greatest strength appears to be his engine, keeping the shape compact between defence and attack.

Someone else put up his career stats and he has virtually played no regular club football. He has played more football for Aussie underage teams.](*,)

A better option at full strength and injury free:

...................................Duncan/Hall

Geria.................Chapman................Ansell................Smith/Gersbach

....................O'Neill.................................Irvine

..................................Da Silva/Antonis

Mabil/Borello..............................McLaren..............................Ikonomidis

Subs : Deng, Melling, Retre, Blackwood, Mauk, Hoole, Elsey.

Jamal Reiners was with the squad initially but is now with Perth, is that because he was possibly the most outstanding player did he want out or even other wise? if anyone can clarify this process that would be appreciated

7 of them have been picked up by Sydney FC

Well done Sydney, i thought Dragicevic the keeper would go to Sydney for the coaching but not another 6. I understand 3 to the Roar and one to Bruges.

Which lad has gone to Club Brugge? Also what other lad is going to play overseas?
