paradox here is we are actually decent defending in 1v1s but are still shocking defensively...............I suppose the theory is defensive structure can be learnt at a later age but its not like we do learn good defensive structure at a later age

@ SWandP
"The next evolution required in our game is to focus on teaching strikers to attack the near post successfully. We've never been able to do it" ....
..... Maccers was as frustrating as hell with this, instinctively he would choose the back post 99 times out of a 100 .... and yet he still scored 20. If it's not coached out of him he'll struggle in Germany.

The game finished 7-3, they hit the post 4 times as well and a couple of easy chances it could have been 12 or 14 goals....
Seriously why are not good at finishing i know they kids, at least its nice to watch, all players are comfortable on the ball in tight but their collective defending was a problem.

A smart coach would actually change the approach with this team where he want to protect his weakness which is defence and make the attack more effective and even play a different system i.e 4-2-3-1, we will never win games against higher level teams like this. Then again it doesnt bother the FFA and the coaches as results doesnt matter than much at this level but its acurring problem at all levels. I think the NC now needs to focus on developing better defenders now we are well equipped technically and even tactically.

The good news is that individual technique is present. Collective defending is all about the tactical structure, which is more dependent on coaching and discipline, and which I think can be addressed more quickly than a lack of individual technique EDIT You say as much in your next post...

The real tournament is in September? This is supposed to be the extended training run in realistic conditions. Assuming this group has to be brought together for intense team training, then I would be fairly happy with the hit-out.
The early goals looked like a combination of Indonesian excitement and adrenalin combined with a fair bit of "he's yours, that's your man, oh shit". As the game went on the kids settled down and started to focus on what they were supposed to do and they took the ascendancy. Fully expected to see the ball punctured by protruding jaggies on the woodwork.

There are some decent highlights there, and some of the goals we scored looked quite nice. The build up to the goals was generally smart and controlled. I like that some of these kids aren't afraid to cross the ball. It's something that only some of the current Socceroos do well. Indonesia seemed to largely be playing on the counter attack and that is something that always leaves our teams exposed. Obviously it is hard to turn and chase a forward at speed after they break through, but Asian players seem to be so much more nimble and a lot faster than most Australian players (even our wingers etc). I always wonder what is going on with that. Anyway, a bit more defensive structure would help stamp some of that out. It's also nice to see that these are our U15 boys and they are playing against U16 teams. Definitely some nice technical play in patches :)

What you will find is that this evens it self out in the older age groups. Ive watched these boys in the flesh and its hard to tell on tv but you will find that most of the Asian boys at 15-16 are more developed physically then our boys. Once they hit 17-18 there done and our boys start to bridge the gap.

Watching the youth teams of late, assures me why we need a national second division along with expansion of the current competition. The talent coming through is very promising we need assure them opportunities to play first team football.
We are missing out developing more younger players as a result of the current structures.

I believe wholeheartedly that physical development can be postponed
but I'm a little skeptical about postponing learning about defensive structure (mind you the 2nd goal from indonesia was actually just impressive play and the 1st a gk mistake)
A league clubs and socceroos don't catch up to the better teams around the world in terms of defensive structure
Perhaps thats not an argument to teach defensive structure at a young age but to improve a league coaching on this at a senior age though....I'm not sure but its a worry
finishing though is part of technical development so even if we don't modify the current philosophy that is something to address

Australia's Joeys Score Big Win Against Indonesia in AFF U-15 Championship Jakarta. The Australian youth football team, nicknamed the Joeys, sank Indonesia's under-15 national team 7-3 in the third match of Group A at the Asean Football Federation U-15 Championship on Thursday (13/07). In the match in Chonburi, Thailand, Indonesian striker Amiruddin Bagus Kahfi bagged a hat-trick but the team was helpless to stop Australia — playing in an aggressive 4-3-3 formation — from more than doubling his score. The end result was unthinkable in the first 10 minutes, when Indonesia led by two goals. Kahfi scored in the third and eighth minutes with a couple of his customary clinical touches in front of goal, terrorizing nervous Australian goalie Jamie Signorello. But the Joeys' Trent Ostler, probably his team's best player on the pitch, struck back after nine minutes, skipping past two Indonesian defenders before nonchalantly deceiving Indonesian goalie Ahludz Dzikri Fikri with a lob into the net. In the 11th minute, Ostler sent a low cross to Noah Botic who easily tapped in the ball for the equalizer, leaving Ahludz and his teammates stunned. The equalizer boosted the Joeys' morale and they ended up bossing the rest of the match with superior ball possession in midfield, led by deep-lying playmaker Ryan Teague. Lachlan Sepping, who plays for Sydney pro club Marconi Stallions, put the Joeys into the lead in the 14th minute as his deflected cross from the left flank fooled a helpless Ahludz. Sepping could have scored again eight minutes later if his powerful shot did not miss the goal by inches. In the 30th minute, Ostler danced around Indonesian defenders inside the box then passed to striker Botic who blasted a shot into the net for the Joeys' fourth goal. The Australian team added two more goals in the 35th and 55th minutes with two headers from midfielders Birkan Kirdar and the dominating Teague. In the 63rd minute, Kahfi tapped in a rebound into the Joeys' net after a counter attack for his first international hat-trick. Australia scored its seventh and last goal in the 64th minute through substitute Stephan De Robillard. "We wanted to steal at least a point in this game. It looked like we were going to do just that with the two early goals, but we just could not maintain our intensity for the whole match," Indonesia's head coach Fachri Husaeni said after the game. http://jakartaglobe.id/football/australias-joeys-score-big-win-indonesia-aff-u-15-championship/

tonights game at 730pm vs myamar i believe (can anyone confirm?)
In any case have a look at thailands games, won by one goal for all three games so they are probably a big drop in standard below us. It just shows what a bogey team they are for us at all levels
I think its their speed off the mark that throws us!
