Quote: Adelaide Crows coach Phil Walsh has been stabbed to death and police say his son will be charged with murder.
Police and ambulance crews were called to Walsh's house in Bungey Avenue at Somerton Park in the early hours because of reports of a domestic dispute.
Paramedics treated Walsh, 55, at the house but he died at the scene from multiple stab wounds.
Officers searched the area for his son, 26, and detained him a short time later in First Avenue at Glenelg East.
A mind for midfield
Phil Walsh's death will be felt across the AFL after his coaching stints left lasting impressions at Port Adelaide and the West Coast Eagles. I don't think it's reasonable to ask them, from learning this news on Friday morning through to Sunday, to even think about football. Gerard Whateley, ABC commentator Police said he was taken to Flinders Medical Centre for a psychological assessment.
Walsh's wife Meredith was taken to hospital to be treated for a leg injury.
SA Police Superintendent Des Bray said police were called to the home shortly after 2:00am.
"I can't tell you anything about the argument or the circumstances of that, but as a result of that both Mr Walsh and his wife received the wounds and the wounds ultimately caused Mr Walsh's death," he told reporters.
Superintendent Bray said a knife was found at the scene, but did not say what sort.
"As you would appreciate, the investigation is in its infancy," he said.
"We can't speak to the son at this stage and obviously [the] wife is receiving treatment so as the investigation unfolds, I'm sure we'll find out exactly what happened."
Superintendent Bray said no-one else was at the property at the time.
Crows players are gathering at the club's headquarters at West Lakes. They are scheduled to play Geelong on Sunday afternoon.

Please be respectful in this thread and avoid legal issues. I'll leave this open for sensitive discussion but if it goes off the rails at any stage, it will be shut down. Please do not discuss the murder charge circumstances or allegations as that is now sub judice.

Has to be rescheduled. Unless they call the game a draw. I dont know how the players and staff can get up for the rest of the year. So shocking

This week is the last one. Play it as a midweek game later in the season or just scrap the round entirely and have each team play one less game. Walsh spent time as a player at Collingwood and coached at West Coast and Port. He's reach is well beyond the crows so it would be reasonable if they just called the whole round off.

In absolute shock and disbelief.
A master tactician who finally got his chance this year to be an AFL head coach after long periods of being an assistant and senior assistant coach. Very sad news.
Words can't describe waking up to this and as others have said I can't see the Geelong/Crows game going ahead.
#RIP PHIL WALSH

Tragic stuff for his family right now, Phil seemed like such a great bloke and will be sorely missed.
Apparently some of the players thought this was a joke when word started spreading so I can't even imagine how shocked they are right now, I think the decision on what happens with their game this week has to be made by Adelaide and not the AFL. Walsh would have wanted them to play but you can't blame them if they want to postpone, I don't know how they'd be able to get up for this.

Well the TV execs, betting agencies, sponsors and the like can go and get nicked, the Adelaide game this weekend, or the weekend’s remaining AFL games, have to be called off.
No one will be in the mood to play, let alone watch.
Terrible news.
Phil was part of some famous Richmond-Collingwood trades in the 1980s, involving Geoff Raines and the like.
Social issues over commercial interests here, the rest of the games this weekend have to be called off. Channel 7, Fox and TAB can go and jump.
Seeing as there is no post season activity in the AFL they could easily accommodate this and push finals back 1 week.
