Brisbane Roar coach John Aloisi says club can challenge for A-League despite off-field issues

A candid John Aloisi has opened up on Brisbane Roar's nightmare A-League off-season, revealing he was kicked out of the club's former training base Ballymore on his first day as coach.

But the Socceroos legend says he has placed his trust in embattled owners the Bakrie Group and believes the Roar can contend for the A-League title this season despite all their off-field issues.

Speaking in front of more than 100 supporters at an intimate fan forum held in the team's Lang Park changerooms on Tuesday night, Aloisi admitted his short tenure as Brisbane coach has been fraught with difficulties.

"Has it been a hard preseason? Yes, I won't lie," Aloisi told the crowd.

"It's not easy when players are owed money or haven't been paid on time. People I brought in haven't been paid on time.

"But all I could say and I re-emphasise with the players is there will always be a Brisbane Roar, no matter what happens in terms of ownership.

"Having worked for Fox Sports, I know - Brisbane Roar have to stay.

"Who would get rid of the most successful club in the A-League? It's not going to fold, no matter what.

But all I could say and I re-emphasise with the players is there will always be a Brisbane Roar, no matter what happens in terms of ownership.

Aloisi got an early taste of Brisbane's financial issues on his first day in the job, when he was evicted from Ballymore due to the club's legal battle with the Queensland Rugby Union over unpaid rent.

That left Brisbane with no training venue on the eve of pre-season and very little money in the bank.

"So what did we do? The next day, we didn't cry - I went out with (interim chief executive) David Pourre and said to him, 'drive me around every pitch possible in Brisbane,'" Aloisi said.

But Aloisi moved to assure fans that the picture at the Roar has changed significantly since the arrival of Bakrie Group representatives Rahim Soekasah and Demis Djamaoeddin, who have guaranteed on behalf of the Indonesian conglomerate to clear all of the club's debts by January.

"There was a period there where we didn't know what was happening," Aloisi said.

"But now that Rahim and Demis have arrived in the last couple of weeks, it's settled the club and settled the players a lot more.

"The players have kept their focus the whole time on football.

"Sometimes away from training it's hard for us ... players have family and friends as well and people are talking about it, and making some not-so-nice comments to people on the street, like 'are you going to get paid this week?'.

"But we've got trust in the owners now and we've got to make sure that we concentrate on our football."

The Roar will travel to Sydney on Wednesday ahead of their A-League season opener against the Western Sydney Wanderers on Thursday night.

*yawn*

You're just comparing apples and oranges there my friend. 9 out of 10 clubs have launched their full range of membership programs from full down to 3-game packs. 1 out of 10 hasn't, that's Roar. With roughly 12,500 members last season 6,000 were full members and 6,500 light membership packs so compared to last season Roar full members are 3,873 v 6,000 (about 63% of last years sales) and on lite memberships Roar have sold 0 v 6,500 last year (0% if that helps you?).

On the assumption lite memberships outsell full membership by a factor of 1.1 Roar look to be heading for 4,250+ full season members so - when lite memberships go on sale next week - they should sell 4,700-ish giving a likely total membership of around 9,000 .... continued off field improvement and a decent on field performance may even push that over 10,000 ...

But hey, don't let facts get in the way of your bogan-like comments buddy :)

It was discussed in the fan forum and you can go have a look. only full membership is currently up. I think we will see a spike pending the WSW, think the new signings will help bring some more fans in along with last night discussion.

That's right - full membership sales tend to peak after the first couple of home games are done whereas lite memberships tend to sell reasonably well throughout the season given Roar has a huge stadium so availability is not an issue. Last season we'd sold 10,000 at the season start and over 12,500 by January so there was an uplift between game 1 and Christmas of 20-25%

So in other words your fans want to wait and find out wether or not your going to have a decent season before they buy a membership.

That's the very definition of a bandwagon

Ha Ha - I love it when people don't read what others have written but reply anyway. The lite memberships haven't gone on sale for Roar yet (unlike the other 9 clubs) so that particular "bandwagon" isn't available to be jumped on. So when people compare Roars membership numbers with other clubs at the moment it's not a like for like comparison.

After the season starts people continue to buy the lite memberships (normally 3,5 or 7) for games and I believe they're popular gifts at Christmas for example. And this true for all clubs so if Roar fans are "jumping on the bandwagon" as you say they're doing it no more or less than other supporters with the exception of wanderers (but that will change with a bigger stadium). And if Roar fans were jumping on the bandwagon last season they were doing so in spite of the awful start and results, so credit to them hey!

There looks to be a membership boycott on going at Roar but until last week (7 days ago) many feared they would lose their membership if roar went bust and the squad was two short of the minim requirements with rumours more players were set to leave ...... you can hardly blame fans for a wait and see attitude really .... hopefully with things now returning to normal sales might improve - they certainly will when lite memberships go on sale ...

I can't actually believe anyone can be bothered to post sh*t like this, even more that I'm bothering to reply. However, here goes:

Roar Full memberships are at 4,808 (versus about 6,000 last season so we're at 81% of last seasons total now) lite memberships still aren't available so Roar have sold about 0 v 6,500 last year .... Mariners on the other hand have sold 5,330 memberships with (an unreported mix) between full and the lite memberships (which include anything from 3-game packs to global memberships with no actual game-day access). So the numbers above are like comparing apples and oranges, they're both fruits but .... The numbers above are for memberships and one is for full members only, the other for full and lite memberships.

So what is the point of this comparative post Buggalugs? You might have talked about:

(1) Roar having sold 1,100 FULL memberships in the last week which is not bad and probably more than any other club achieved in the same period
(2) you might have talked about the 3-1 victory over Wanderers indicating the off field dramas haven't affected the players, or maybe Aloisi's part in that win?
(3) you might have talked about Roars new striker, MacLaren looks more than a replacement for Berisha
(4) you might have talked about Roars two Spamish signings - Corona was nominated most impressive new signing over R1, surely that's worth commentary?
(5) what about Theo's return to form and fitness, surely the most successful goalkeeper in HAL history coming back is worth a comment? (especially when Wanderers don't seem to have one decent keeper on their books while Roar are spoilt for choice)
(6) you might have commented on how that win elevated Roar to the top of the all-time HAL league table above victory, after ten full seasons and 1 game no one has accumulated more points than Brisbane roar
(7) if you were getting desperate you could have talked about Roar becoming only the second HAL side to score 400 league goals (after Victory)
(8) you might even have talked about Roar only committing a round one low of 11 fouls and whether they are competitors for the Fair Play award again this season, runners up last season and winners on 5 previous occasions (more than any other club) they do play fair and are successful at the same time

Or you could have spread your attention further afield, maybe posted about Adelaide and how poor they played, or maybe Isaias and whether he should be disciplined for faking injury in order to get an opposing player sent off??

All of these things were available to you and many, many more but you somehow think an apples v oranges comparison of memberships between two clubs was worthy of your time. Are you a sad little man in real life??

Tbf if he posted anything positive in here, then it wouldn't be called the Roar Circus thread.

Why aren't Roar selling their other memberships yet?

At the fan forum the cited three reasons (1) technical (with Ticketk presumably) (2) Cost and (3) available resources. I'm not sure there isn't something else behind it but that's what they stated. Also said they'd be on sale this week but so far nothing.
