Yep prob the weirder choice of thread names. But I am back at it starting new threads to help ease the mid week blues. So far we have covered best moment - your away days and where are they now.

But I thought we could try something different.

STADIUMS we all love the great game but do we love where it is played. Now this can apply world wide to where you have been to watch or just know about.

Thought we could start a thread to look at the best worst and weirdest stadiums going around. Again I don't think I have seen a thread about this so if it is not up to par give her the flick but hey lets have some fun.

Feel free to give the positives and negatives about the place.

So far I have been too

AAMI PARK love this place. One of the best sporting facilities in Melbourne. Fantastic atmosphere and easy to get too. Food is in my opinion the best out of the sporting area of Melbourne. Cant really fault the place if anything might be to small but this is only an issue for victory
Directly opposite Hisense arena and near the MCG on a summer day you can watch your team play then trot off to the tennis or cricket to complete your day/night.

Etihad stadium - Not bad derbies are massive and the crowds flock in again easy to get to which is great - would prefer AAMI park thou. Has the ability to push the seats in which is awesome. Can be annoying if you are stuck up the top in rectricted view.
Food isn't to bad but car park is a killer they will charge you a home loan to park there.

Sydney Football stadium
Been a couple of times now, Not as easy to get to as the Melbourne venues but isn't the worst. Have found it to be a decent place to watch. The away bay seems very flat if I had tall people in front of me it be a struggle too see. The new screens look great on TV thou

That's about it for where I have been so you all get the jist of what the thread is all about.

So here is some random stadiums around the world that area interesting.

Swiss village side FC Gspon's stadium is the highest in Europe. Built on the only available piece of flat land it is so high that normal cars cant work and the players have to travel up via cable-car.

A very unusual looking stadium would be this one in Braga, Portugal.

No seats behind either goals.

Notice the wires, which are connected between the two stands.

Faroe Islands National Stadium - Just a cool stadium with a nice view

MAN U v Bolton - Old Trafford 1949

Buggalugs - you should...
Buggalugs - you should have listened...

Hindmarsh Stadium.

It is just pure pornography.

Ohh I like this thread.=d> =d>

Whilst I have never been to it, the Stadium of Light looks great, with fans right on top of it all

One that I have been to is El Molinon (Sporting Gijon) That stadium was great and the noise it generated was fantastic. Game was a cracker, Sporting were losing (and lost) and the guy sitting in front of me had the biggest vain popping out of his neck i have ever seen with him losing his shit throughout the game i thought it was gonna blow!

And my favourite which I have been to many times is Loftus Rd, Queens Park Rangers. It is a small stadium and you are literally sitting ontop of one another but there is no better noise generated from a crowd of 17K that I have even been apart of (and I have watched Real Madrid play at home)

Next on my hit list of stadiums to watch games at,

The Karaiskakis stadium where Olympiakos play

The Vicente Calderón Stadium where Atletico Madrid play (i gotta get there before the move to the new stadium too)

These are the stadiums outside Australia I've been to.

Mcdiarmid Park. Home of St Johnstone in the SPL. Saw the home side lose 3-0 to Celtic there last season. Nice little stadium with roughly 15k capacity I think. Good atmosphere even with only 6k or so there. Mind you more than half of which were Celtic fans.

Whit Hart Lane. Home of Tottenham. Saw Spurs demolish QPR 4-0, also last season. I thought it was a fantastic stadium. I was only 3 or 4 rows from the north-eastern corner flag yet still felt like a had a great perspective of what was happening even on the other side of the field.

Went to a match at La Bombonera, Boca's stadium, a few years back. Pretty incredible ground, and an insane atmosphere. You could feel the stadium shaking under you after Boca scored.

The new modern All Seater stadiums don't particularly interest me.

The Emirates and Eastlands might look very flash and fancy but it's hard to feel a real connection to them like Highbury and Maine Road did
.
The Taylor Report in the UK led to the destruction of some beautiful stadiums in England and Scotland, I can only listen enviously to the stories of past generations.

One in particular that stood out was the old Hampden Park, previously the biggest ground in World Football and definitely the most intimidating of it's time.
It was a shithole (still is for that matter) and nearly the entire stadium was terracing but it held a special place in the heart of World Football at the time.

You used to be able to fit over 150,000 people in this old girl for the big games like Cup Finals and Scotland games.

The official attendance for the Scotland vs England game in 1937 was 149,415 but it's been suggested that there were in fact over 160,000 who were actually there.

My old man still tells me of the days he went there with 130,000 people to see the European Cup final between Real Madrid and Eintrach Frankfurt in 1960 (pictured below). The crowd roared with approval seeing the skill of Puskas and Di Stefano as they humiliated the Frankfurt defence.

It still holds the record attendance for a UEFA match with 136,505 people attending the 1970 European Cup Semi Final between Celtic and Leeds United.

Sadly though, that was the last truly big crowd the old girl got as the Ibrox disaster led to the capacity being cut to 80,000 in the 70's and then later to 50 odd thousand in the 90's.
The decline of Hampden has reflected the decline of Scottish football over the decades.
These days it's another boring all seater and I feel that it's lost it's emotional connection with Scottish Football fans.

EDIT: Thanks for stretching this thread to fucking death machine

Inb4 A16 man but I genuinely love WIN Stadium. Note: no idea if these will stretch the page or not. Also, I don't think either picture has captured the West Stand upgrades properly.

It's a massively under-utilised stadium and it's in a cracking area.

Wollongong got dicked by the Super League war and SGI Dragons only play a couple of token games there now.

I still maintain that the grass hill should eventually be roofed and turned into a small single tier standing area like "The Shed" stand at the Kingsholm Stadium in Gloucester.

Stadia I've been to.

Links park in Montrose on East coast of Scotland. Synthetic pitch and they play in the Scottish 4th division. Saw them play out a 2-2 draw against dunfermaline in the Scottish FA cup about 5 years ago

Emirates stadium. Very comfy seats

Anfield. Very uncomfortable seats.

Two of my favourites.

Belmore Sportsground. One of the biggest single tier grandstands I can think of in Australia for stadiums around that 20-25k mark

And my home away from home, Sydney United Sports Centre. Still remember in the NSL when behind the goals at the south end I think, was all still terracing and being in there when it was packed in a semi against South Melbourne and not being able to see a fucking thing . And then they got the seats from ANZ Stadium after the Olympics.

Little bit of trivia about the Stadium of Light - seat for seat it is one of the lowest cost stadiums in the world. When we aquired the land from the local development corporation (it's a reclaimed colliery site), due to the condition of the land, the agreement was that the development corp would pay for all costs below land level. The architects promptly designed a stadium with the bottom tier of seats (plus changing rooms, warm up area, medical facilities, press-room, etc.) below ground level, as a result we (Sunderland AFC) didn't have to pay a penny for half the stadium! Costs of the upper tiers were also drastically reduced because they weren't actually that far 'up'.

The extension of the third tier around the North Stand (adding 6000 seats) actually cost the club as much as the initial 42,000 seater stadium!
