Being smaller cities, Osaka and Kyoto on the other hand at least acknowledge you and you can get a smile or two from passer bys. Out in rural areas and small islands like sukoku they would buy me drinks all the time. Really excited to see any foreigners . And if you saw another non Japanese ( Indian guy or African American woman ect) you would wave at each other and at least nod heads to window ledge each other . Like a special club. Kyoto were ore used to westerns but VERY friendly.

Try to speak a bare minimum of French when you are there and you will have a completely different experience from your normal tourist yob. This is how I imagine Japanese and the rest of that region see us as. Growing up on the goldcoast I worked a few tourism style jobs. I remember during a brief stint at White Water World in one of the food stands you could see how some people reacted to asians not being able to say what they wanted (other than the word Coke). Some people would handle them fine and calmly figure out what the wanted to eat. Others would snap almost instantly and go straight into snob/rude mode as soon as they couldnt articulate hotdog correctly. Some where on a 442 japan forum, someone is writing how beutiful OZ is but the people are arrogant pricks.

Of my very limited travel experience i found londoners to be unfriendly... watched probably 50 people walk passed this women who was trying to get her kid in a stroller up some stairs while holding the hand of another child before my wife and i gave her a hand. She was super greatful. In Spain the people in madrid were friendly... same with seville and in valencia we were looking for a deutsche bank to get cash out but the two that were on the map on the westpac app had clearly moved or closed down. I asked a guy in a booth for a carpark in terrible "valencian" if he knew where it was, he spoke a little English unlike most in the rest of Spain and he shut up shop and walked us there, he was so awesome! Then we went to Barcelona... safe to say everyone were assholes except for one guy in a supermarket who had emigrated from Pakistan and knew we were aussies straight away and just wanted to talk cricket! Was really good to be able to have a conversation in English with someone other than my wife!

But when I was there years back, on my last day, I bought some mini Eiffel Towers from the African vendors (working illegally) near the bottom of the actual Eiffel Tower. I handed over a 50€ note (if memory serves) to this bloke and was waiting for him to give me change. He was trying to find change then police turned up and he had to scram. He ran off with my 50€ note. I was resigned to the notion that I'd never see that 50€ again. I was a bit annoyed. My friends and I did the Eiffel Tower tour. We got back down an hour and a bit later or something. After we got back down, the bloke went and found me and gave me back the 50€. Seriously, France would have a far better reputation if they let more people like that work legally in their country.

I have had people just walk up to me and stare in Korea, once you get out of Seoul many have never seen a foreigner.
My nephew lived in Cambodia until he was about five, and being blonde haired and blue eyed he thought it was natural for people to stop him in the street for photos. He was crushed to move to Australia and discover he wasn't a rockstar.
Amman is the friendliest city I have ever been to, love that place, and anywhere in Morocco has the friendliest women. Basra and Kandahar are tied for the worst.

Sydney is one of the snobbiest and rudest cities in the world with a tryhard complex. Melbournians and Brissie are way friendlier. Sydney = B grade celebrity capital. ive lived in syd my whole life and been around Mel and syd and coastal townd many times. it pains me to admit this but its true

People are very friendly all over India and Nepal.
North of England is great. Ditto Scotland. They love Aussies.
Italians are charming. Greeks are great on the islands. Spanish are renowned for friendliness.Swiss are goo din Italian speaking Switzerland.
Arabs are very hospitable in Jordan and Oman. Southern Iranians are very friendly. Thais are great hosts. Malays are happy and laugh a lot.
Arabs are shocking in Saudi and the first class Kuwaitis. Overall Kuwait is friendly with all the immigrant workers from the sub-continent, Phillipines and other Arab countries without oil ( Jordan, Palestine, Egypt).
Burmese are also very friendly. Balinese kids are very welcoming.
Gee, overseas tourists must get a shock in Sydney.](*,)
Tourists tell me ( I have tourist accommodation on Tassie's East Coast), that east coast Tasmanians and Far North Queenslanders are friendliest people in Australia. I've found people friendly in all Aussie states in rural and regional areas.
Canberrans who've travelled a bit are alarmed they think Canberrans are not particularly friendly when they return.

Mate, I've lived in Sydney. I hate to offend people who live there, but it is the unfriendliest city in Australia by so far it isn't funny. Other unfriendly places in order. 1. London (a disgrace to the English speaking world, and very different to the English north). Without doubt, the unfriendliest place I've ever been. I have Pom parents and many Pom relatives too. 2. Istanbul ( too many touts, the rest of the people in Turkey are very hospitable). 3. Paris Can't think of any other unfriendly cities and I've been to 25 countries. Friendly cities in Australia - most places other than Sydney, where nobody trusts anyone else. Friendly overseas cities in no particular order - Lucerne, Rome, Madras (Chennai), Chang Mai, Singapore, Surabaya, Penang, Ipoh, Hamilton ( NZ), Rarotonga, Delhi, Calcutta, Darjeeling, Siena, Florence, Athens, Hong Kong, San Francisco, Toronto, Katmandu, Manchester, Chesterfield, Durham, Sheffield, Derby, Lincoln, Edinburgh, Inverness, Cardiff, Kuwait City, Dubai, Izmir, Fetiye (Turkey), Denpasar, Rangoon, Barcelona.

I was in Guangzhou and Shenzen as a teenager in the mid 90s, when there was heaps less tourists and remember the stares I got. Like, just unashamed stares. I was pretty cocky so it really didnt bother me. My kids are Eurasian and still very little. When we were in Hong Kong I had multiple strangers try to take their photo on the subway. As a protective dad it gave me the shits. At a relatives funeral, other relatives we had never met were literally lining up to take a photo with my little girl. On topic, I'm Sydney born and bred and we are rude as shit. Queenslanders are the lovely people I've met. Could easily live there. It's the ones in China that do it without your permission that gave me the shits. In HK I'shake my head at them and they would put it down, but if someone went ahead and did it I reckon I would rip their phone out of their hand. I'll say this though, I'd much rather take a pram and baby through TST in peak hour than on any Sydney CBD station Agree with you about Hong Kong, even on the trains people are very courteous. Different kettle of fish on the mainland though especially if you head out of the popular tourist cities.
