I agree. I welcome them to Sydney, but perhaps they should be resettled in some regional areas .

And what are they gonna do for a crust when they get to these regional areas?

The same thing they would do in Sydney

I'm sure some people on here don't have a brain.

Let's do some maths shall we.

Let's send 1000 refugees to a regional centre with a population of roughly 30 000.

Let's say half of those 30 000 people work (15 000 for the arithmetically challenged) of those unemployment is at 8% (conservative for regional towns.)

That's 1200 people that are out of work in that town.

Now refugees, initially, are men who come first and bring their families with them. Let's say 750 out of that 1000 are now looking for work.

The working population pool is now 15 750 people.

The number of people looking for work is now 1950 boosting the unemployment rate to 12.4%.

That's a 50% (+) increase.

I realise this is a simplistic overview and there are other factors but as shitty as it is lumping them all in Sydney or Melbourne the opportunity to absorb them is clearly more easy in a city with a larger population base.

Not to mention facilities, support, etc etc.

Yes, regional areas where hundreds of thousands of people live.
You brought up towns.

Forgive me if my first reaction is to call your statistics bullshit without offering my own.

I'm calling BS on the stats as well.

I'm sure if people were provided with the opportunity to have meaningful employment to support and advance themselves and their families, they would.

In any event, of the 12k we are taking in, you would hope that we are screening people properly and a decent portion would be skilled and able to find some work in Australia.

Sydney grows by roughly 60-70,000 people every year. 7,000 Syrian refugees will make no noticeable difference.

And if we want them to be near services, jobs and support networks, sending them to the country is fucking dumb. Especially in the areas of education and mental health, these people need to have easy access.

Shove over everyone (again).

Actually, 7000 is not that much. There's been something like 60,000 Iraqis move to Australia in the last 12 years, they just didn't all come as refugees so the stats don't jump out.

Stats published a couple of years ago said that the employment rate among Afghani refugees was 5%. HOWEVER, I would be a lot more confident of people from Syria being able to adapt faster to working in an English speaking, developed country.

If your job is taken by a fresh off the boat refugee with no skills, no clothes and limited english speaking ability then i think it is time for you to up skill. I think all these refugees will end up like the mexicans in the USA. They will do the low skilled, hard labour jobs that most 21st century Australians don't want a bar of.

Your comment is not without merit but If only lowerclass poverty line "Bogan" Australian had the support of a tax payer funded multicultural industry that ensures them quality access to health, accommodation (possibly heavily subsidised), training, education and employment etc.

Regardless this issue is much more complicated than more competition for jobs.

They support these policies knowing that the migrants won't be settled in their neighbourhoods, but will be out where the working poor live. They get to display their moral superiority without suffering the consequences.

The upside of that is that these scumbags will be in Western Sydney, not proper Sydney. Enjoy the extra drive bys, gang violence and longer lines at Centrelink.
