I used to lean very much to the left to be honest but over time could no longer stomach the delusional aspects of it that did more harm than good, some of it very intentional and orchestrated. That is not to say I have turned rightwing either, they also have very self serving elements and do not have the peoples interests at heart. I took a political test recently, i'm pretty much bang on centre. However it seems as though 'right wing' labels get thrown around liberally when an opinion that people should be responsible for their own welfare is thrown about. Maybe right wing or conservative is the new taboo word to insult someones political opinions with?

There is no need to get defensive about being misguided by some right wing ideals. Its a process of learning and better education that is required such that we can all lean forward together.

Not all right wingers are religious and not all left wingers are atheists. But, on average, religious people are more likely to vote right wing.
Apart from the large amount of research and polling on the link, you can see stark current evidence for Australia, if you go to the ABC Vote Compass and filter the religious related questions (abortion, gay marriage, euthanasia) by ideology. It clearly shows a sliding scale of support from extreme left wing to extreme right wing.
