Quote:Researchers at Flinders University have accidentally discovered a way to remove mercury from water using a material made from industrial waste and orange peel. Mercury is a dangerous pollutant that can damage food and water supplies, affect the human nervous systems and is especially poisonous for children. Synthetic chemist Dr Justin Chalker said his team initially set out to make a useful type of plastic or polymer made from something widely available.... ....Because the material needed to make the polymer is so inexpensive, large quantities can be deployed at a site of contamination, in rivers, lakes and other waterways. "We've also done toxicity studies to make sure that the polymer itself is not harmful to the environment so that gives us hope that we'll be able to commercialise and actually use this in the environment," Dr Chalker said. The substance could be used to literally suck up mercury at sites where it is contaminating water. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-10-19/researchers-discover-a-way-to-remove-mercury-from-water/6865462

People who say science is bullshit without any research or proper scientific study to back up there claim should be shafted to ISIS.

Just rename it the "Research" thread and this could be quite a goer.

Ricy 2.0 has his panties in a twist because of my comment in the data retention thread over academics.

Oh hey, look, it's the lukerobinho and ricecrackers crew that think climate change is a hoax and that all scientific research news is left wing propaganda that would like to welcome SocaWho into their fold. I think it's dangerous to say left wing=this, or right wing=that. There are plenty of highly intellectually gifted right wing (and centre-right wing) academics (and educated people in society) out there. Likewise there are some truly stupid left wing people. And vice versa. Moreover, using left wing and right wing is very dangerous. I don't think you can categorise a person as entirely left wing or right wing. I'm fairly left wing about some things (or so people would interpret) and I'm fairly right wing about others (or so people would interpret). Where does that leave me? How do you categorise Barack Obama? In terms of foreign policy, he's very right wing. In some respects, more right wing than George W Bush. In terms of health care and internal gun laws he's (by American standards) very left wing. By Australian standards he's probably bang on the middle in terms of health care and gun laws. I'm not comfortable referring to Obama as left wing, right wing or whatever. Similarly Christopher Hitchens was probably a bit here there and and everywhere (but he was not inconsistent, by any means). I think society would be best dispensing with labels of left wing and right wing.

The problem is that people like to put everything in a box. There seems to be a anti education thing going on as anyone who seems to be an intellectual gets painted as a out of touch person

True, it isn't dichotomous, it is along a scale. That said, to make things easier for the wider public, it is often simplified into two categories. Regarding its relationship to intellect there is quite an amount of research on the link between political ideology and both IQ & education.

It is also not a one dimensional left v right line but rather is two dimensional and some would say three dimensional. I would argue that the authoritarian v libertarian line is more important. Some people make the assumption that right wing = authoritarian and left wing = libertarian and that is not true necessarily.

True, it isn't dichotomous, it is along a scale. That said, to make things easier for the wider public, it is often simplified into two categories. Regarding its relationship to intellect there is quite an amount of research on the link between political ideology and both IQ & education. Without knowing about the research, I'm gonna pre-empt that it points to a correlation between left-wing (or what it describes as left-wing but I wouldn't necessarily) and greater levels of IQ and education. It might not utterly wrong. I think, in the States especially, there's quite some link between the totally stupid and support for authoritarian Republican policy. So it's not without merit. But it's too superficial to go that way. I know countless people who identify as very left wing and boy are they stupid. They often miss the point entirely and there's some kind of ridiculous agenda. Likewise, I know plenty of people who live in high socio-economic areas, are very well educated and they are regarded as highly intelligent (although sometimes this is questionable, imo). Some of them are fairly left-leaning. But guess what. A heck of a lot of them are very right wing. This is because it suits them to pay less tax, etc. So I'm sceptical about drawing these kind of links. Just as I'm sceptical about this labelling of left-wing and right-wing. It's largely bullshit.

I've never had a problem with science and its findings....I only have a problem when its used to bolster propaganda for one's political persuasion. Edited by SocaWho: 22/10/2015 07:38:47 AM

The Christian right are threatened by the discoveries and rules of science. True - it is from the right wing. And it's a furphy when it's stated that science is compatible with religion. It isn't. The reason the statement is made is because science has progressively eroded the areas where a deity can be ascribed to cause or existence, thereby increasing the prevalence of evidenced based thinking. Religious institutes are simply 'digging their heels in' with what little they have left, in a desperate attempt to remain relevant. Thank goodness that progressive thinking has lead to religious instruction being removed from the Victorian State School Curriculum.
