A scuffle that broke out between players during a game of lawn bowls in Bendigo this weekend is being investigated by Bowls Victoria's disciplinary committee.
Tempers flared at a match between Eaglehawk and Bendigo when one player who was celebrating allegedly bumped into the opposition.
Bowls Victoria's Graeme Bridge said the behaviour did not paint a good picture for the sport.
"Usually the biggest thing that might happen at a bowling club in regard to a play underway might be that somebody didn't put enough pickle on the ham sandwiches," he said.
Mr Bridge said penalties could be applied but said he was still gathering details about what happened.
"It's obvious that some people could just not hold their emotions and have expressed those in what I would say would be a rather distasteful way if it's found out that there was some argy bargy and any sort of physical contact was made," he said.
Bowls Victoria said heat and aggression may have contributed to the altercation.
The Bendigo Bowls Division confirmed there was an incident and said a statewide disciplinary committee would investigate.
The Bendigo Bowls Club declined to comment while the matter was before the tribunal.
Mr Bridge said Bowls Victoria did not condone violence in the sport.
"We don't want that sort of thing sneaking its way back into bowls, which has always been regarded as a friendly, non-aggressive type sport," he said.
"I don't think there's anything in the rules that permits full on contact bowls and if there did, I just don't think that would be the way for the sport to go."
Bendigo won the match, but it is understood Eaglehawk has lodged an appeal against the final result.
The Bendigo Bowls Division is expected to hear that challenge.
