So I was speaking to my mother in law about this, and she told me in a matter of fact way that my wire and her were almost shot at a school when the serb forces came and took over the school. Luckily the teachers hid everyone, and my father in law was lucky when he was in a serb town that the truck driver he knew didnt say he was a bosniak. Or he would've been killed on the spot, also been told that every time a check came he got hoarded off a bus and searched because he looked "muslim".

Karazdic, Izetbegovic and tujdman were all pieces of shit who sold there own people for a little bit of political power. Glad this piece of shit will now rot but there are so many other from all 3 sides of the war who deserve to be serving prison time but alas they wont because they were considered to be on the "good side".

So much hostility in this thread. A true omen to such a barbaric individual like Karadzic.

People who have seen some of the worst things rarley speak about it. They don't like to relieve it. They rather focus on their future .sadly my some of my wifes family's friends have Ptsd . Heck my mother in law cant look at a tank as she gets panick attacks. Family friend is so paranoid he has shut himself off from everyone besides close relatives

That's horrible. I don't know whether finding a relatives body would be good or bad at this late stage. Such a long time after the war it would only open old wounds. Out of curiosity (feel free not to answer if you're not comfortable doing so) but do the mrs's family speak much about those times? None of them speak on it. Hurts to much. But my mother in law has her brothers medal. My wifes friends husband has his fathers medal as well. He got the equivalent of the vic cross. By and large, I think that's how people have been about the First and Second World Wars. You get some real exceptions to the rule, but that seems to be the case. My grandfather was very quiet about his time in the war when operating against the Japanese. And, of course, however horrific the First and Second World War were for most Australian and British troops, they were still soldiers fighting a war. I'm not trying to suggest that means they don't deserve any less of our respect or support, but the thought of innocent civilians being targeted in a genocide is another level of evil by way of comparison.

We should always care when this kind of evil occurs. Whether it's done to people in cosmopolitan Western cities, Eastern Europe or the Middle-East. Whether it's done to Christians, Muslims or atheists. Whether it's done by Christians, Muslims, atheists or whatever. We should always care and we should always care in as equal measure as possible.
We should also always defend the individual's rights such as freedom of speech. These kind of values ought to be defended to the death. However, although anybody has the right to say whatever they want (as long it doesn't directly incite hatred and violence), we should remember that there are some things we should not say or do.
We must remember that cause and effect is every bit as relevant in history and sociology as it is in science. Things like terrorist attacks and genocides do not occur out of nowhere. We have a responsibility to work at grass-roots and institutional levels to ensure they don't happen. This is best done by treating people the way we wish to be treated.
Nobody wants to be treated like shit, so don't treat others like shit. It's really that simple.
Finally, it's important that these kind of criminal prosecutions are carried out (when done so fairly and with proper legal representation all round). You only hope that those Western political and military leaders and personnel are held to account in much the same way.
Otherwise there's no point.

Because you just assume that no one knows about the war, or knows anyone who was affected by the war, or doesn't care about the war. It's disappointing that you immediately dismiss any form of discussion. Especially given your wife's family who i'm sure were directly affected by the war. Of course the Baghdad article is newsworthy. Don't put words in my mouth. My point regarding the that thread (which is not remotely relatable to this one) is that it is such a regular occurrence in that country/region that we are desensitised to it and thus do not react the same way as we do when the same thing happens in Belgium/France. This is irrelevant to this discussion. If you want to have a discussion fine, but cut the petty shit out of this thread before it gets a chance to start please. Out of curiosity, have all of the victims of the Srebrenica massacre been identified? I recall approx. 12 months ago several more bodies were uncovered. Not a nice way to open wounds for the country. I have not been to Bosnia. What is the reaction to this news in Bosnia? They are always finding bodies. My wifes mum lost one of her brothers in the war so did my father in law my wifes friends husband lost his father as well. He got sent to sn interment camp and was totured .
