Except the asylum seekers choose to run the risk of being locked up, bypassing many nations where they could also find refuge.

[-x no dealing truth bombs here bud.

I don't particularly like that we virtually imprison people for up to 18 months, all it does is make them angry/frustrated and this isn't the kind of people we want in our country, but I do love how people ignore the fact you alluded to above

Feel sorry for you.

When we moved factories the Boss made a no radio rule. At first things seemed quiet but it didnt take much to adjust. Before you would have 7 different radios all louder than the last all with different songs and different shitty stations.

For a start, those 'many nations' often deport asylum seekers (Indonesia does it all the time) so they're hardly safe havens. Many aren't signatories to, or don't enforce, the UN Refugee Convention. Aside from that, are you really blaming people for taking a shot at moving to Australia instead of remaining stuck in limbo in Malaysia (or wherever else)?

Which concerns me. Apparently we're the worst for violating human rights and yet we're not the ones sending these people back to die (yet....).

I don't blame them. However these people are coming from all over the world here. Many of them could get to Europe much easier than Australia. I have to wonder what they're being told which makes them take such big risks to get here as opposed to other countries.

TheDecider wrote:

But aside from the justifications on either side, I think the fact we lock innocent people up in virtual gulags is something we'll look back on in a few decades' time with a sense of national shame. There may even be an official apology from the PM.

I agree with this. These people are not criminals.

I also do not understand why they're imprisoned for so long at such an extreme cost. Would be cheaper to let them in and pay for a trade education so they could actually support themselves.

False dichotomy, again.

Anyway, whatever the alternatives are, it's a fucking shameful solution, and in a few decades' time it will be viewed as just another black mark in Australian history.

If you didnt implement the policy or support it I hardly see why you would ever have to feel shame about it.

For the same reason I feel pride when Australia does something positive.

Being nationalistic goes against leftard tradition. If you ever want Australia to be as good as Sweden or Germany you should stop supporting the notion of nations.

Is this an unpopular opinion?

Politics and Facebook is a disastrous combination.

Personally I think so. I have never in removed a friend (due to this) no matter how much crap they post, however the posting still comes on thick.

Holy fuck, these fucking people...

Whenever I see this shit posted on Fb, I have to resist the temptation to write "I hate Australia and I think white people are all a bunch of disgusting racist bigots. Am I progressive and hip or what!" I don't bother because I have better, more constructive things to do than waste my time arguing with self-loathing retards who could be on their knees, handcuffed in an orange jumpsuit and about to become the star of the latest ISIS snuff-film and still be finding a way to blame it on evil America/ Israel/ Right- wing conservatives/ Tony Abbott/ Islamophobia etc...

There are only two intellectually honest debate tactics: (a) pointing out errors or omissions in your opponent’s facts, or (b) pointing out errors or omissions in your opponent’s logic. All other debate tactics are intellectually dishonest - John T. Reed

The Most Popular Presidential Candidate Of All Time (TM) cant go to a sports stadium in the country he presides over. Figure that one out...
