I got that it was a thought experiment for the fun of it. I like to expand upon ideas I like.
I don't think the issues would come in the transitions but having to have volunteers on every stage of the course at all times tracking the competitors to ensure their safety and prevent cheating.
The way it is set up now you can also be eliminated early for not completing a section quick enough in relation to the rest of the field. Not sure how you would judge that when the athletes are starting and finish all over the place

The finishing and starting lines would ideally be side by side for timing reasons and so that you can have the theatre played out in the one place of having a swimmer, runner and cyclist approaching the same line at different paces. That would make choosing the location interesting.

The ones I competed in you had a timing thingo strapped to your ankle and as you went through a gate or over the mat it clocked your time so that rules out cheating and it as a bonus it would provide constant updates to a central scoreboard.  Swimming updates would difficult but they could clock them as they enter the water and then visually clock them as they went past markers.

Not sure about how you'd eliminate slow racers except to have a minimum qualifying time prior to the race.

I agree with finishing at the one spot.  That should happen.  Most lakes or beaches have a road right near them so you could set up 1 lane of that road for the bike, the other for the run and the swimmers finish with a 50m dash to the line where the other 2 finish on the road.

It was just for fun but it wouldn't be that hard.  All your transitions are setup before the race anyway and under the 'complete any leg in any order' system there'd be less competitors in each transition rather than everyone arriving at once.

You choose your legs before you start which would also throw up some tactical decisions and strategies for the other competitors who have to decide whether to follow your choices or go with what they think is better for them.

It was really just a thought experiment but it'd be interesting none the less.  I've done triathalons before and hate running last.  Would rather finish on the bike because I can't run for shit and when I finish the swim and ride I'm fucked.

Logistical nightmare.

Under your rules do they get to choose midway what stage they take. Say they finish the swim, have they chosen before the race that they will be running the second stage or can they then choose to run or cycle depending on the circumstance.

I'd imagine no-one would be doing the swim anything but first. Much better to redline on the run or bike than drown in a swim.

How you can make money if better favorite team won?
Bad odds.  No fix.

why do  think the  favorite have to lose, to only make money?   :D

do i speak for all Australia?

i'm a pro gambler , i've seen lots of games....i understand luck in sport, I understand when something not s right, i understand distribution of fouls...

Spain could not have ask for the distribution of the fouls to go better then they did....

by the way, I didn't  be on this game....

Spain the best team in Europe...but they have average age 30 years

but Spain had max help today from lady luck (or something else)...I'm amaze Australia had this game close

Last foul called by American NBA referee.  Best referees.
Spain is a great team. Gasol is great player.  Australian play well today but better team won game.
Why do Australian always complain about referees when they loose team sport?

It was the perfect way to end our miserable Olympics. Boomers were enormous in that final quarter, as were Spain, that last clutch play you cant blame on the refs.

that last foul didn't get called on till after it mist the basket....in fact, so late the ref called that foul, I though the ref called reaching foul Gasol

Good match of basket ball.  Sore looser blame referee but Australian played well.
Congratulation Spain.

this loser know a lot about how to fix basketball games in Europe

you want to call it bad luck that the 3 Aussie big got 13 fouls and Gasol got 1 foul....i call it, ok what the fuck is going on here

Equestrian is there because it's, as far as I know, the pinnacle of various equestrian events to win an Olympic gold.

That justifies it as an Olympic sport. Plus, it has been there for so long.

It's difficult for those of us for whom equestrian is an utterly abstract sport. And, obviously, there's definitely a class advantage (although not just for equestrian). But I've a few friends from overseas who've grown up around stables. They can see the merit of it.

It's just difficult for many of us to understand it.

meanwhile in lighter hearted topics what would you guys see as an olympic sport

I wouldn't mind laser tag or paint ball

hey why not?

u23 Cricket would be good

Out: Tennis, Golf, Pentathlon, Football, and Equestrian

In: Squash, Tug of War, Futsal, and Kickboxing.

MMA would be worth a mention, I'd love to see Lacrosse but I don't think it has enough worldly presence, and Laser tag or paintball does sound pretty interesting too.

Next Olympics Baseball, Softball, Karate, Sport climbing & Skateboarding are being added, never seen sports climbing, but I'm pretty happy with the other 4 sports.

Would love to see the athletes in the triathalon choose whatever order they want to do the legs in.

I.E.
Athlete 1 - Swim, Run, Bike
Athlete 2 - Run, Swim, Bike
Athlete 3 - Bike, Swim, Run or any other combination.

Would throw up some interesting finishes if nothing else.

Would be interesting to see a bloke on a bike try to chase down a bloke on the run leg who had a 20 minute head start.

Logistical nightmare.

Football replaced with Futsal or beach soccer. It will never happen.

Surf life saving as a category. Only down side is that we would be expected to do well in it because as far as I know we are the only country that competes professionally.
Of all the Surf life saving sports I want to see flags entered the most. It has the acceleration, speed and technique required of athletics sprints combined with cunning, strategy and stamina required to be successful at middle distance field events.

Kite surfing added to the list of sailing events.

I'd also like to see orienteering disciplines added including categories for foot, cycling and kayaking but it isn't really great for spectators or to televise. You also can't have athletes just wandering around the bush in potentially dangerous host countries like Brazil.

I listened to the ABC Grandstand talk pre-game about players being role models and the talk was how losing is a part of life

Granted it sucks to lose, but the cult of winning has gotten out of hand for Australia at the Olympics

Is the want for 15 gold medals or bust the necessity to reinforce some pride or how Australia punches above its weight? its tenacity? Or is it the danger of how plural Australian society has become, ie 'sport, if thats your kinda thing'. The Americans have a plural society too lets not forget

do you even listen to what people say
you keep coming back with this straw man that its about winning

I dont think its so much about the gold medals as much as its about choking on the world stage. As an elite sporting nation i think we can and should be a top 5 nation, we are definitely capable of doing better than what we did. I dont think theres anything wrong pushing for gold medals, sport is essential to our culture and resting on our laurels and being content with mediocrity isnt the Australian way

the first sentence sums it up

5 gold medals where we had the vast majority exceeding their heat and semi final performances then its a great olympics

20 gold medals where we choke under pressure is a worse olympics for me

of course that is contrived if every one exceeded their heat/group and semi final performances we would probably have around 12

Apparently, the AOC has spent $377 million AUD on funding elite sport programmes since London.

http://www.theaustralian.com.au/sport/rio-olympics/rio-olympics-aoc-has-spent-377m-on-elite-sport-programs-since-london/news-story/5e569a6072c368a5828b88a32db0a51d

That's sounds like a lot of money. But, in the scheme of things, it's really not.

thats right its less than 0.01% of GDP for a "lottery profession"

lottery professions like art, acting, music and elite sport need government spending because in the grand scheme of things its not a lot of money and the world is dull without them
