Russia will do well but he sounds like a rip off of BWO to me.

Australia and Lithuania should also do well.

I don't see the point if Russia winning. Around town it may as well be European pride week here. I'm not sure Russia is mature enough to host it or there will be a boycott from fans. Not that Russia would probably care.

A fair few countries seem to be using the special effects seen in last years winner, Sweden. Most notably, the favourite, Russia.

Russia hosted it in 2009.

it highly likely that Dami Im has won the Jury vote, by the way the odds for Australia to win has come in from 20/1 to 4/1...the Jury vote before the final, after watching the singer sing in the jury final on the Friday

Australia might win eurovision

Last I heard, Australia were at $5 to win Eurovision, which is 2nd, behind Russia.

Should Australia win, the runner up will host next year.

We're there because of the European broadcasting Union membership.

UK and Ireland need to sort themselves out. They've sucked for years.

Any particular reason why those countries wouldn't give us 12? To fond of their neighbors? Too proud European for outsiders? They've probably all got family here so I'd expect at least a little fondness.

Using DPA mics this year I see, still a European manufacturer, from Denmark. They used to use Sennheisers for as far back as I remember.

If Australia wins they should be forced to use Rode mics and shoot it on Blackmagic cameras and studio gear. :D

Definitely the first song tonight to hit that Eurovision signature big final chorus, but was the body of the song too slow and ballady?

Hope they go for it.

I found Danni got decent applause and cheers after the first verse.

Everyone starts way too slowly. Not enough decent bang in the opening then I'm bored by the middle with a mediocre chorus.

Yep. We'd "host" in the territory of a EBU partner, most likely Germany, but it'd be us putting on the show, at least.

Is the jury so vital? Last few with 0 for Australia.

The voting in the Eurovision Song Contest is set to be radically transformed in 2016. In previous years the results of the professional juries and viewers have been presented as a combined result, each accounting for 50 percent of the final score. From 2016, the professional juries and televoters from each country will each award a separate set of points from 1 to 8, 10 and 12. This now means the top 10 countries in both the jury and televote will receive points, adding a new level of excitement for hundreds of millions of viewers in Europe and beyond.

Have you seen something that suggests we'd do it in Germany? I agree we'd do it in one of the "big 4" as they're the easiest to work with and hardly ever get to host.

Send an aboriginal next year to sing about the stolen generation and we're on a winner.

Poland had a big fluctuation.

Jury of knowledgeable industry people voted pretty accurately. We killed it.

The public vote was a popularity superficial political contest. Weak year anyway.

what is there not to understand..Russia special forces pretending to be pro-Russian demonstration taking over Crimea airport and Crimean parliament , and with in 8 weeks, Crimean are voting in a sham election where they tell us that 97% say yes to join Russia , 97%

we know they was Russia special forces pretending to be pro-Russian demonstration, because Putin told the world they was Russia special forces

Russia then try to do the same thing to south-East Ukraine, but Ukraine with only about 500 troops and another 500 volunteers start fighting as soon as Russia special forces try to take over Donetsk and Luhansk...but this time Putin say this is not Russia troops fight, but farmers and miners , some how the farmers and miners have found more tanks then what all EU army's have combined

lets not for get the all the practice nuke bombing runs that Russia airfoces is now doing to the Scandinavian countries

shooting down MH17 and killing all those Australians ...

No, under last years voting system Russia would have won. Australia would have finished 3rd (or was it 4th?)

there no way Russia would have won, because they finished so low in jury vote...Russia was the same as Italy last year, italy won the public vote. but came 6 in jury vote to finish 3rd over all

we don't know for sure, on till Eurovision will give both jury and public vote in all countries

this is not 1st year of jury and pubic voting, it just 1st year of giving 12 points to both jury voting and public voting.

Will Australia participate next year?

I thought it was pretty rough on Australia as far as the public vote went.

It was a good song.

But how Cyprus came 21st has me flabbergasted. That was a great Heavy Rock number that deserved better too.

Just goes to show, it's not about picking the best song.

Sure I can accept different tastes in music and that it is all subjective. Not a problem.

But 21st? Nothing subjective about that.

Countries vote in blocks, and for political reasons as well. It's probably why Ukraine won. I am not going to take that victory away from them though because if it helps the Ukrainian people in their hour of need, then I'm all for it.

but this is why they brought in jury voting, other wise Eastern Europe would win every year

she had to to win the jury vote by a big margin on Russia (which she did) but there was very big support for Ukraine form the pubic vote away from Eastern Europe ...

Australia can't win Eurovision with out winning the jury vote by a big margin, Australia just doesn't have the voting blocks

Pretty interesting perspective and true.

Australia got the jury vote. But why didn't the public go for it as much?

Your logic is wrong Sweden has won twice recently as well as Austria.

Frans wasn't even the best Swedish song IMO.
Sweden has a big qualification tournament in 6 cities with about 30 acts. But all the little girls voted for him , they vote the most.

Serves you right for your laws against gays...

Quote:
Russian lawmakers have lashed out at arch-rival Ukraine's "political" victory in the Eurovision song contest, as one pro-Kremlin paper insisted Moscow's entrant was robbed.
Ukrainian performer Jamala won the glitzy contest with her ballad 1944 about the deportation of the Crimean Tatars by Soviet authorities during World War II in a performance widely seen as a swipe at Moscow over its annexation of the peninsula in 2014.
Russian singer Sergei Lazarev, the clear favourite with bookmakers before the contest, was beaten into third place after losing out on the national jury tallies despite claiming the most points from viewers in the public vote.
"It was not the Ukrainian singer Jamala and her song 1944 that won the Eurovision 2016, it was politics that beat art," Russian senator Frants Klintsevich told Russian newswires, calling for Russia to possibly skip next year's tournament in Ukraine.

IMO Belgium & Russia were the two best - particularly Belgium, who I heard SFA about. Thought her act was fantastic.

Just for a bit of fun.. if Australia won & we were allowed to host it in Australia - where would we host it? Opera house is super iconic but unless we incorporated the outside, it's way too small. Thoughts?

That's correct in the old system the jury votes and public votes were combined and then ranked based on that. So if you came first in the public vote and last in the jury vote you'd get no votes. Under the new system you'd get 12.

The data on the jury and public votes have been released. If it was last years system Australia would have won with 320 votes to Ukraines 279.

Apparently the Danish juror misunderstood the voting system and accidentally gave Ukraine 12 points and Australia 10 when she actually wanted to give us 12 and Ukraine 0.

Wouldn't have changed the result but the margin of defeat would have been 9 points instead of 23.

I am not familiar with the song in question. Perhaps you can post a YouTube.

But don't be so quick to jump to conclusions. The Cypriot may have paid a royalty which is usually the case. The same with the UK Team. They would have lawyers checking things out for them surely.

The chorus sounds very killer-esque, the verses not so much.

Work on Australia’s spin-off of Eurovision is ramping up after Dami Im’s result. New details revealed

WORK on an Australian spin-off of the Eurovision Song Contest is ramping up in the wake of Dami Im’s incredible second-place finish in Sweden on Sunday.
SBS announced in March it had acquired the exclusive rights to develop a music competition for the Asia Pacific region, at this stage called Asiavision.
While early media reports had indicated it would launch next year, executives at the multicultural broadcaster said 2018 was a more realistic expectation. That’s no longer the case.
“There’s a flurry of activity after what happened (at the) weekend,” an insider said. “SBS want this to happen next year.”
The network’s content chief Helen Kellie confirmed the hope was to get Asiavision on air in 2017, with the inaugural spectacular to be hosted in Australia.
“I think (this year’s Eurovision) renews our confidence in the idea that this is a big brand…what I can say is that we’re absolutely working on plans to get this happening next year,” Kellie said.

SBS is in discussions with broadcasters in China, Korea and Japan to form a reference group to urgently develop the concept.
“And potentially India,” Kellie added.
“Then obviously we’ll have additional countries who will participate but perhaps won’t be as active in the shaping of the editorial (side).
“Our aim will be to have 12 countries (compete) in the first year.”
Since Im narrowly missed out on winning Eurovision on Sunday, which was watched by a global TV audience of 200 million people, some of our biggest Asian partners have been in contact, Kellie said.
“Absolutely, we’ve had a lot of interest. At the moment, our focus is on getting that reference group going. We want a set of partners to help us shape what the show is.”

Australian Recording Industry Association boss Dan Rosen said the format would open local musicians up to huge new markets.
“If it can have even a small part of the success that Eurovision has had, it’s got big potential,” Rosen said. “We know our artists are world-class so the more exposure, the better.”
While she was in Stockholm to watch Im compete, Kellie met with the European Broadcast Union who organise Eurovision to discuss the Asia Pacific adaptation.
“We’ve got a lot of details (to finalise) but they’ve been amazing … they’re incredibly supportive of what we’re trying to do.”

She concedes staging the event will be a huge undertaking but said the model was designed to be cost-neutral to begin with, before making “a modest profit” in a few years’ time.
Hosting our own version of the long-running show, now in its 61st year, also doesn’t mean we’d wane in our interest in competition in the main event, Kellie said.
“Look, it’s early days yet — I’ve literally just landed so I haven’t quite formulated a plan, but obviously we’ll be discussing it with the EBU and Ukraine, who host next year.
“We’ll have everything crossed that we’re invited to compete again, but it’s very much their choice.”

WORK on an Australian spin-off of the Eurovision Song Contest is ramping up in the wake of Dami Im’s incredible second-place finish in Sweden on Sunday.

Im a Eurovision Eurosnob. I dont know how they do it in Russia, or other places but I didnt like that Im was asked/selected.
In Sweden there are 5 rounds in different cities then a second chance semi and the final in Stockholm of the Melodifestivalen.
The winner represents Sweden and it pretty much has better songs than Eurovision on average.

This is a short recap of the 12 Swedish finalist

no. 9 Boris plays second division for Defgerfors

I think SBS could be on a winner if they can work out a good format. Eg. have 1 semi in Melbourne and Brisbane then a final in Sydney on phone votes. Even start off with one qualifier in Sydney (it is good exposure for the artist and could be good is they could generate sponsors etc.)

I think there was about 3-4 better songs than Frans, but he got all the little girl votes
He was already known as he had a Zlatan song 10 years ago

I'm pretty sure the majority of entrants are picked by the member broadcaster, and I would speculate that in many cases it is done with serious industry consultation with a view to get the best result they can.

No country goes anywhere near as all out to select their entrants as Sweden, but it would certainly be an easy win for a potentially hit show for SBS to put on at a relatively low budget, certainly for a potential Asiavision place. I imagine SBS' music industry partners wouldn't be happy to be out of the loop for the choice of Eurovision entrant at this stage, considering they bankroll the endeavour.

True.

I think have a comp it is good because it gives artist a national platform and some of them turn into summer hits.

Personally I think it is better to engage with Asia.

They are not born in Australia and they grow up in house with Asian culture.
This is not important, Asian countries dont want Australia to lead Asiavision.

Australia can have Oceaniavision. Australia not in Asia or Europe.

I admire your passion but you are mistaken.

Even if Asia views Australia as European or not Asian it is not important. As the article states;
- SBS have the rights to the event, so Asia cant set up this competition without Australia
- Asia countries have been contacting Australia to be involved
- China, Japan, Sth Korea and possibly India will be involved in the competition structure
- It was originally going to happen 2018 , but they are so interested it will probably happen 2017

Asia is interested. It will be in English and hosted in Australia for the first year. I do not expect Australia to win so it will be in Asia in 2018. This will become popular.

So Australia are in it or it doesnt happen.

They have the rights to the concept.

Also, they need a country like Australia to set it up because China wouldnt join a comp set up by Japan and vice versa for example.

If the Vietnamese sites you read dont want it, dont watch it. Vietnam will be represented in Australia 2017.

It is not to be expected Australia will be invited to compete every year in the Eurovison. There is also the company that run Eurovision, they want to incorporate China and other Asian markets.

It is written as 12 countries so most likely;

Australia
China
Japan
Sth Korea
India
Indonesia
Thailand
Malaysia
Vietnam
Singapore

and 2 others

that is a massive market.
