WP take notice this woman is smart Quote:"We believe we'll be immeasurably better off," Poole said. "We are really looking forward to developing our New Zealand style of play. We saw the beginnings of that again with the Silver Ferns towards the end of last year.
"We've tried to play the Australian style for the last nine years and it hasn't worked. In fact the competitive gap has widened over that period so it's time we come back to who we are and how we play and develop our own strengths." http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/netball/80188030/netball-new-zealand-say-they-are-better-off-without-australian-teams

Edited by azzamvfc: 20/5/2016 04:46:21 PM That was another thing i was wondering. Wasnt the current structure for tv getting more cash from nz than here. I did read however that the figure was underpinning the future of the competition. Whether that's until 9 cuts its losses or for x amount of years, nothing has been released. It could turn into channel 7 football if they don't do it properly.

My wife as a kid followed her netball team (Melbourne Phoenix) and would go to the home games, apparently the league alienated a lot of fans when they disbanded the old league (especially in Melbourne) but in Melbourne the Vixens have had a lot of success at bringing people together and this new Collingwood team looks to me to be a bit like Melbourne Heart, except for the AFL link, all that's going to happen is: - Vixens supporters that follow Collingwood in the AFL will move to the Collingwood netball team. - Alienated netball people that are Collingwood AFL fans will move to the Collingwood netball team. - Alienated netball people that aren't Collingwood AFL fans will remain alienated. This looks like the NBL from a few years ago, a couple of good years and they boot out the rubbish (NZ) unless this competition is fully professional and will draw the NZ players over it is going to destroy the one internationally competitive team Australia can play against.
Is Collingwood hedging their bets with Netball and a female AFL team?
Im keen to see how this one goes, I previously thought that if any FTA channel was going to pick up the rights to the A-League it would be 7 and this just reaffirms it.
As a lasting note... I wonder if Netball Australia has heard of a mystical club known as the Collingwood Warriors.

I win. Latest article mentions the Phoenix and how Australia is ignoring Kiwi sport.. Like the authors comment about the Phoenix value adding... Not sure what he was smoking that day... http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/opinion/79997210/Joseph-Romanos-Impatient-Australian-netball-chiefs-ruthless-with-New-Zealand-counterpartsIn the intervening years Australia kindly sent B teams and let New Zealand teams play their state sides. Even now it's difficult for our cricketers to get a fair shake of the dice - when was New Zealand last invited to play in the prestigious Boxing Day test in Melbourne? New Zealand's team in the National Rugby League, the Warriors, have made two finals, in 2002 and 2011, since their debut in 1995. Apart from those efforts, the Warriors have been pretty undistinguished, but league officials value their presence. The Phoenix have not made a final since their A-League football debut in 2007 and there was serious talk recently of dispensing with them, but they have hung on. They enhance the A-League, even in their bad years. The Breakers had an inauspicious beginning to their ANBL basketball experience, losing nine of 10 games at one point in their debut season, 2003-04, and finishing last the next season. But the ANBL persisted and the Breakers have now won four titles. They just needed time. What a pity Australian netball wasn't patient enough to learn that lesson.

Should soccer take note?
On the court Australia has dominated but, off it, they relied heavily on New Zealand and specifically funding from Sky Television to prop up the competition.
Now, with a breakthrough broadcast deal expected to be signed off this weekend that will, for the first time, allow Australia to stop paying for production costs, it seems they are largely ready to go their own way.
"I love watching New Zealand teams play but for us in Australia and in New Zealand the fact of the matter is the fans don't deliver what we need to actually sustain the ratings at a level where we can be commercially successful," Palmer said.
"This is really about growing the game through growing the broadcast eyeballs. Australia needed to do something, and we needed to do something quick.
"New Zealand and Australia have enjoyed massive support from Sky Television for a long time but we needed to step up. We acknowledge that - and the New Zealand fans have been saying for a while 'come on Australia, do your bit'. That's our intent.
"We're pushing ahead with a competition that increases the number of teams in Australia but also provides a trans-Tasman component. Now we're working on that piece. We know eight teams is achievable; we know we have a broadcast deal all but there.
"We will continue to work closely with Netball New Zealand; we always will."
From a New Zealand Netball perspective, concern will centre around its existing broadcasting deal with Sky. The agreement is tied to the trans-Tasman competition as it stands, and any new format may force a new contract with the broadcaster.
"I imagine there's a bit of a re-think going on. That would be a fair assumption," Way said of Sky's broadcast agreement. "When you're redoing an agreement you evaluate with what you're dealing with and if that's changed there could be changes. But it's worth noting we're big supporters of Netball New Zealand.
"Our current agreement is all encompassing and we'd be looking to do the same if it was anything different."

http://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/2016/05/11/dumping-nz-best-aust-netball-plummerDumping New Zealand teams in a trans-Tasman netball competition shake-up would be the best thing for Australian netball, according to former Test coach Norma Plummer. Australia is set to revert to an eight-team national competition next year, with the NRL's Melbourne Storm and AFL club Collingwood behind two of the three proposed new franchises. Plummer, who coached West Coast Fever between 2012 and 2014 in the Trans-Tasman league after nine years as Diamonds coach, said New Zealand teams were holding Australia's progress back. The Southern Steel are the only Kiwi team to post a win against Australian opposition this season. Plummer said including another three Australian teams would give more local players a chance to play at an elite level. "I don't think it would dilute the standard as we had the same type of competition before the ANZ Championship anyway," Plummer said. "We had the eight teams and were doing well with that and it gave the national coach a hell of a lot more people to pick from. "Australia has to do what's right for Australia." The veteran coach said that netball needed to keep ahead of rivals such as AFL, who had plans for a women's competition. "There are probably players who aren't getting the opportunity to be on the court at an ANZ standard so Australia need to keep their development going." However Plummer, who now coaches South Africa, didn't want any changes to be to the detriment of New Zealand's Test team. She called on the international body to do more to make all teams stronger, with m

Strong talk in the Herald Sun today and here that Aussie netball is about to go it alone.
