Yes sure. Keep telling yourself that he was paying over priced "fringe benefits" in order to justify worker exploitation!

The green apologists who think an au pair would work the minimum amount of time (25 hours) are deluded. No they aren't, they are liars, not even a Greens voter would be stupid enough to believe that. DiNatale offered the position as suitable to a couple without any increase in wage, which works out to less than $2 an hour. He knew it was wrong, all animals are equal but some are more equal than others.

Don't think some in here don't really get what Au Pairs actually do or why people seek these jobs. Rent and Board is a standard part of the payment arrangement, it's an extremely common way for people to travel. When you actually see the farm that they get to live in, the beautiful part of Victoria it's in and the home grown produce they have access to, the level of expense for Rent and Board is completely reasonable.

I've done nearly the exact same thing in Europe to help pay for my travel and give me the chance to live for a few months in a lovely part of the world. This is a pretty lazy attempt at a smear campaign(even for the libs), OP is a dope and Rusty is stupid enough to fall for it as usual.

$350 for 7 nights accomodation on a farm house in the Otways with meals all week. that's $50 per day. again conservative nutters cant do maths.

Thats some damn fine capitalism right there. Charge $50 per night for a bed and shitty home cooked meals.

Lets assume you are a green capitalist like Di Natale, and you were in need for some au pairs. You decide to charge them $100 per night, which is well below market rate of equivalent hotels. Lets say breakfast is $10, lunch is $15 and dinner is $20 , fairly conservative estimates. Tea, oxygen and use of the toilet is $5 per day. Over 7 days and night that would work out to remuneration of over $1,000 per week, in lieu of wages. So you could employ an au pair for 38 hours per week , not pay them an additional cent, and still be well above the award wage.

That is what he was saying and it still doesn't meet award conditions.

He claims to charge $300 per week for board. Was it the Sheraton or something?

Oh right, so pizza shops and restaurateurs can now pay below minimum wage just because they might provide a meal which costs them about $5 in ingredients!

If there is a nice view, you can dock their pay even more.

My my, the hypocrisy in here... :-k

It's like running a Dominos franchise and paying your staff with pizzas and garlic bread

no it's like paying for all expenses - in nice accommodation with good farm food in one of the most scenic places on the planet

That's like the dominos manager underpaying you because you get to eat the freshest olives and work in one of the best workplace cultures in Australia.

Oh right!

That makes sense now. So hotels and resorts can now pay their workers $150 per week for 25 hours of work provided they provide accommodation in scenic places!

I get fully how it gets. You take on foreign nations who are desperate for work, pay them a measly a $6 an hour and then top up their pay with fringe benefits like exorbitant rent, use of the toilet, tv time and one shower per day to bring them up to minimum wage and justify to yourself you're not committing slave labour.
