Yes, I would like to openly declare that I no longer have any affiliation to AUFC and that I will not be going to ANY of their games, or let my family attend, until the A League becomes less plastic.

If and when SMFC and my old club of West Adelaide join with Adelaide City and enter the A League, then I will re-engage.

Until then, c'mon West Adelaide in the NPL and our ally Adelaide City!

The plastic AUFC logo is also gone and replaced with the non plastic West Adelaide logo!

I hope you realise that 442 forums is plastic and that you should feel encouraged to extend your noble gesture of boycotting all that is plastic.

I fully support you in your lifelong endeavour.

No wind up. I am being serious. Don't really care who get's upset or not. They shouldn't get upset at all, but some people just have no clue.

If people don't do things like this, or express their opinions openly and freely, then the FFA will not know that there are issues out there and that the Football Community is divided. These sentiments are hardly uncommon.

No I watch the Euros. That's not plastic.

Doesn't matter if Greece didn't qualify. Maybe they will qualify next time. They aren't exactly excluded from the competition. It's merit based.

Love the European Cup.

The NPL, European Cup and EPL is my Football fix.

Let's check the facts here:

Number of Clubs "supported": 4
Numbers of Countries you "support" clubs in: 4
Number of clubs outside of top division: 1 (25%)
Changes "support": Yes

Definitely a plastic. None of them on their own mean much, but having 4 clubs, and changing one suddenly for a weak reason (to do with the league as you put it), suggests that you're as plastic as they come.

This is either brilliant satire or you're a self hating plastic.

I don't discriminate against countries nor exlude others from competition.

It took me 12 years to attend an A League game, and boy, what a mistake that was.

Adelaide City and West Adelaide allies? I think you got your wires crossed a bit matey.

Also United was created by South Australian football to represent South Australian football specifically cause city wasn't able to play NSL anymore. So before the aleague era. I guess some people a too young to remember that though.

I remember the good old days. There was never anything malicious between Adelaide City and West Adelaide. Just some on field rivaly.

The 2 committees, regularly had joint meetings, functions, and everyone would visit the home teams bars, players including. Spirits were always good.

Shame to lose a real authentic Everton supporter, who obviously grew up in Merseyside supporting the local club of his boyhood, who is such the real deal he refuses to buy Everton strips as now it's just a big commercial money making exercise aimed at people in places with no real connection to the club

The atmosphere was electric but both sides couldn't play their attractive football because of the surface I gather.

Adelaide well and truly dominated most of the game but WSW gave it a good shake after they scored their goal to make it 2-1.

This was a great spectacle for a League Football, and a great endorsement for the game. It gives our code and AUFC great momentum

So what exactly is so plastic about the A-League?

Assuming from a few comments about "merit" that you'd like promotion and relegation. Fair enough, but this is an economic sustainability reason, nothing to do with being plastic. How many seasons did the NSL have promotion and relegation?? (Believe most the time it happened during the NSL era due to financial constraints / admin more so than merits, I think this is what the FFA are trying to avoid ... hence for the recent consolidation of the league instead of rapid expansion).

The club's logo was another I think you mentioned as plastic ... well considering the age of the competition it would be expected most have fairly modern logos (slowly teams have been changing this over time, e.g. Roar, Melbourne City). Hardly a reason to support or not support a team though.

How does that stop you supporting Adelaide United though?

Why do SMFC have a "right"?? Souths have won the Vic NPL twice since 2004 (start of the A-League). They aren't exactly banging on the door from a merit based POV.

Sure it would be great to have more teams in the comp but due to economic stability and the popularity of the sport in Australia (and the size of the nation) it isn't feasible atm. Shouldn't therefore your impetus be to support the single team representing your area?? If Adelaide were getting sell outs each week, had a huge supporter base etc. etc. wouldn't this be the best way to highlight the credentials of Adelaide to support a second team??

I've been trying to brush over this because I'm sure it's just satire, but really... how does the merger of the traditional Greek and Italian clubs of the city reduce their plasticness. I'd say that traditional rivals merging would be the very essence of plastic.

What, like the SPL with 12 clubs including Celtic, Rangers, Hearts, Hibs and Aberdeen?

Or how about the Swiss Super League with only 10 teams? With Young Boys, Bern, Basel and Grasshopper?

Like the Bulgarian league with 10 teams? Including Plovdiv, Levski Sofia and CSKA Sofia?

Or the I-League with 9 teams, including Mohun Bagan?

How about Ligat HaAl with 8 teams including Maccabi haifa and Hapoel Tel Aviv?

Go away.

It's interesting, to say the least...

I too support you!!!! If only Greece qualified for Euros, so you could watch some football, no A-League, no Greece, must be lonely place. I feel for you.

No I watch the Euros. That's not plastic.

Doesn't matter if Greece didn't qualify. Maybe they will qualify next time. They aren't exactly excluded from the competition. It's merit based.

Love the European Cup.

The NPL, European Cup and EPL is my Football fix.

NPL is front of 500 people, I follow Manly United. Enjoy EPL on Optus, European cup, wow, that's going back in time, you'd have to break out the videos.

No 442 forum is fine, and I enjoy being here.

You can't compare NPL crowds to A League. Apples and lemons.

But at least its not plastic and is the grassroots.

Go away.

Oh so you definately are scraping the bottom of the barrel by making that comparison. #-o

Fantastic day at the Football. Crowd was 50,119.

Lock and ban.

Yes to promotion and relogation. That would be a good start.

Something about 10 team leagues too.

Oh, and I think clubs like SMFC have their right of place. West Adelaide and Adelaide City too and others.

Many things can be don't to reduce the amount of plastic!

The West Adelaide and Adelaide City merger will address this small aspect of leftover egg ball plastcness in due course! :d

I've been trying to brush over this because I'm sure it's just satire, but really... how does the merger of the traditional Greek and Italian clubs of the city reduce their plasticness. I'd say that traditional rivals merging would be the very essence of plastic.

Have they now. Didn't you suggest your cousin played for Everton being the reason. Either your cousin was playing them them when you were born (I'm unaware of any Greek players for Everton in the era 25-35 years ago) or they're fairly new for your "lifelong list".

You gave so little of a care about the Hellas that you just added them today to replace the "off the bench" AUFC.

The best thing about plastics is how hard they feel they have to argue to pretend they're not. You're a plastic, there's nothing wrong with that (except by your own attacks right now), you need to learn to accept who you are.

Their problem isn't plastics, it's that they want to have something that makes them feel special.

Lifelong fans usually only care about plastics if they're taking their spot, as they are generally a good thing for clubs. Plastics lead to more lifelong fans, more income for the club, and a stronger future, usually people complaining, particularly complaining about the nebulous idea of a "plastic league" are people who lack their own footballing identify and are desperately trying to denigrate something to make their own niche. Most of the time (i.e. this case), these people are plastics themselves.

I don't think a merger is on the cards. West Adelaide and Adelaide City will continue but both are looking into forming a joint venture if you like.

There is a major disconnect between the NPL and the A League.

Junior fees are at a record level. I paid $1,000 for 2 kids to play U6. And the money is being thrown at AUFC.

Many fans, have been excluded. Yes so many attend, but they don't feel the same and then there is the more hardcore that just won't attend.

The NPL is being neglected despite it being the grassroots engine room.

I also believe there will be benefits to AUFC. The rivalry will be intence, and I believe the new entity will have a big supporter base from the NPL teams.

AUFC is not popular in the NPL, or West Adelaide and Adelaide City.

The NPL will cease to be "less plastic" when it introduces P/R to the leagues below it and stops demanding something from the HAL that it's not prepared to implement itself. and I watch more NPL-Q each year than i do HAL

To be fair, most other State NPLs have pro/rel to at least one level below it, and some many more.

Queensland is one of only a few that don't.

The only person that seems plastic is you mate for jumping ship from one club to another just for shits and giggles.

12 years means I'm definately not plastic or a little sheep.

I say what I mean and do what I say!

Plastic straw man argument!

Wait... so you're saying that taking 12 years to actually attend a game for Adelaide meant you weren't a plastic.

Boy, plastics have weird logic at times. The odd part is they're usually complaining about "plastics".

Anyhow, have a nice day Plaikhsticme.

12 years to attend a League that 11 years old

Give the plastic the benefit of the doubt, Adelaide United existed before the A-league.

12 years of not attending a game because of the plasticness which continues till this day!

Fantastic day at the Football. Crowd was 50,119.

Adelaide well and truly dominated most of the game but WSW gave it a good shake after they scored their goal to make it 2-1.

This was a great spectacle for a League Football, and a great endorsement for the game. It gives our code and AUFC great momentum

Yes to promotion and relogation. That would be a good start.

Something about 10 team leagues too.

Oh, and I think clubs like SMFC have their right of place. West Adelaide and Adelaide City too and others.

Many things can be don't to reduce the amount of plastic!

Edited by Aikhme: 22/6/2016 01:03:42 PM

We have enough flares in the league as it is. Can't stand any more residing from old NSL resentening teams.

It's funny how you go on about merit, yet you then talk about SMFC, West Adelaide and Adelaide City having the divine right to partake. What a fucking joke.

The A-league is desperate to exapand, but guess what, none of these clubs that you mention can even raise the capital to keep afloat at an A-league level. We can't afford to have the FFA literally save more clubs from going under, which they most likely would (Sth Melbourne aside perhaps).

Show me the link that says either Adelaide team has at least $5-$10 million to bring the club up into the A-league fold.

I haven't seen a flare in years.

Oh they can raise the capital alright.

Adelaide City and West Adelaide have the entire Adelaide Building Industry behind them.

20 years for a team on the other side of the world is ok but 13 years supporting your home town team is plastic
Correct?

No, but it's pretty plastic to just support a handful of teams because of a tenuous temporary connection.

The only recent one that comes to mind is Vellios, but he was pretty awful.

It's called tribalism.

It doesn't exist in the plastic world of A League.

Supporting a large set of successful clubs and trying to justify it after the fact, while changing alliances regularly is the very definition of being a plastic. You are the archetype case of being a plastic.

I haven't changed alliances regularly.

My teams have been life long.

AUFC got a brief run off the bench last season but has now been dropped because it's too plastic!

Oh for crying out loud. I've been following them for 20 odd years, and West Adelaide, Apoel, and Lazio since I was a boy.

Exactly Someguy, back off!!
He simply started supporting a team just before they won a grand final and then stopped again.
No way in hell is he a fickle bandwagoner plastic supporter like you guys.

I decided 12 years ago that AUFC was plastic so never attended. Too die hard WASC.

But after 12 years, I sadly fell off the bandwagon, but I quickly picked myself up, dusted myself off, and now I am ok again. :(

Lol I just went on football news. This is all because of the talk about west and city merging to get into the next expansion phase. Btw I'm all for it.

I like that instead of actually discussing it you decide to shitposts. That's pretty much the opposite of being a pioneer when it comes to 442.

It does show your state of mind though. Overall studies have shown that people who troll on the net do so because of their own internal insecurities and inadequacies. Essentially they use the anonymity of the net to unleash their frustration without having to deal with any of the real life consequences. Basically internet trolls are sad.

In that context I give this a 3/10. It was a nice try but super sad how much effort you have put into it.

Well guess what? You're not very bright.

2 teams means a round of A League in Adelaide every week. Hindmarsh gets another tennant, hence doubles its income, we get a Derby hence higher TV Rights and there is more chance of upgrading Hindmarsh or getting a new Stadium.

for west adelaide to get into the a-league, the citys population needs to increase x4 of what it currently is. i cant see that happening at all.

Just so we're clear on this, your you beaut theory here. Adelaide needs 4 x 1,316,000 people = 5,264,000 people. So, a million more than Melbourne and half a mill more than Sydney. To get a second team. I bet you'd be all over a team in a shanty town like Wollongong though.

By now, American Samoa must have realised that Australias 22-0 win over Tonga two days earlier was no fluke.

So let me get this straight. You believe Adelaide Population needs to be 5.2 million when Sydney has a population of 4 million and has 2 A League teams and arguably 3?

Adelaide's population is 1.3 million and I believe it can sustain 2 teams. It would be terrific for the State.

The goal here is to have a local Derby, and have an A League game every week at Hindmarsh. Then, it's not as tough a sell for an upgrade or new stadium either.

It is a win win for all.

And if the West Adelaide and Adelaide City venture fail, well they go down. No harm done to the A League.

Just West Adelaide which I have supported since 1984.

I only started to jum on the AUFC bandwagon in 2015 and that was a mistake. Too plastic.

Eventually of course, over time, the league will fail.

and how many times have WAHellas been revived , rebranded etc ? Adelaide City , well they were in the old NSL , and for whatever reason were not part of the a league
this state isnt big enough for two teams , and would dilute the supporter base.

Now if your gripe is about junior fees etc propping up AUFC... Open the door to the FFSA, who cannot unite with the SAASL ... once SA has a unified body across juniors , seniors , amateurs etc then we can talk.
Heck id love to see my old amateur team compete in the FFA or even FFSA,but they wont as the market demographic were they are located are well served by other amateur league teams and teams from FFSA...

How do you know the supporter base will be dilutted?

How do you know, other fans will not be attracted to the game?

I think you're stretching a rather long bow there and are making far too many assumptions.

Let's just see what happens. If there isn't room enough for 2, then Natural Selection will do the rest.

If there is, then there is no looking back.

If it was up to me, I would allow the SAASL to merge with the FFSA. It is the best outcome. I would like to see everyone under the same unbrella and the formation of other divisions which encompass SAASL clubs with promotion and relegation into the State League etc.

because the supporter base is scattered now
plus it has to compete in Adelaide , where it is behind two well supported and financially invested AFL teams, then has to compete with a new player in the BBL Team * whatever they are called *
Adelaide Citys crowds were dwindling towards the end of the NSL , and WAHellas, well they left that game ( finances didnt help )

heck its like asking florina and inter to merge ,and compete in the FFSA ? what for ? when there are 3/4 other teams vying for the same juniors, seniors and sponsorship dollars

I think you under estimate the business acumen of the backers.

There is so much money behind them, it's not even funny. And the fact that West Adelaide and Adelaide City are involved, means there is an already inheritable base.

It's not even a troll.

I am just doing my best to raise a little bit of awareness about A League expansion, more clubs, and destroying the big disconnect between A League and NPL.

My intentions are good, but I can't help it if some people feel very insecure or do not agree with this point of view.

They can't!

Most of it goes to player insurance, and the FFSA and in turn to AUFC.

The club only makes maybe $200 per kid, which they use to buy equipment and so forth. I am not sure if the coaches are paid. I think they are paid a small fee.

Nah, this is a fun off season troll, kinda enjoy it, haven't had to pull the ban stick for about a week or 2

It's not even a troll.

I am just doing my best to raise a little bit of awareness about A League expansion, more clubs, and destroying the big disconnect between A League and NPL.

My intentions are good, but I can't help it if some people feel very insecure or do not agree with this point of view.

That's what the state league forum is for.

You don't like pluralism?

Well guess what? You're not very bright.

2 teams means a round of A League in Adelaide every week. Hindmarsh gets another tennant, hence doubles its income, we get a Derby hence higher TV Rights and there is more chance of upgrading Hindmarsh or getting a new Stadium.

But alas...

i'm not sure whats more amusing, you calling someone not very bright or that you think anyone actually takes you serious.

Why did this crap have to get moved to State League? Just lock it and let it die.

Some people, take me seriously let me tell you right now.

Others, with closed minds, and of weak and sheepish character, don't because they are to scared of progress.

Those who are quiet, maintain the Status Quo and go for the safe haven, whilst the risk taker knows that the world is their oyster. You choose between stagnation, or innovation. I can't help you with your issue.

Can they be reasonable request, ones that wont be recless like rushed expansion.

Honest question

Bitza,

I will reply to you because despite your slightly patronizing manner, you attempted to address me politely and asked a valid question.

I am not for rushed or reckless expansion which is unsustainable. Nor do I advocate for it.

I do however, support some very well measured expansion. To make a stab in the dark, I believe the HAL can easily sustain an extra 2 teams. It may be able to sustain an extra 4 teams but I will pull back from this if it scares people.

Now what are the advantages?

Well, I believe the key is to have more Derbies. That would result in more interest from the public, media and TV. That would increase FFA revenue.

How do the teams fund themselves?

Well, clubs will need to engage fund raising initiatives in the same manner as the existing clubs do now. Now we all know that some clubs are not breaking even or profitable. Well, if the FFA can negotiate a better TV Deal, franchise funding will increase by up to 75%.

For me, South Melbourne is a no brainer.

From my personal point of view, I would like to see Adelaide City and West Adelaide to embark on some kind of joint venture.

Someone said that this will dilute the supporter base. I believe that is the case to a certain extent. I predict that Adelaide United may lose 1000 to 2000 fans. It will survive and recover other fans very quickly.

I also believe that many soccer fans will buy memberships at both clubs, whilst the new venture will do very well from the NPL and State League grassroots.

The spin off are there, not just for the clubs, but Adelaide will now have 2 tenants at Hindmarsh. All of a sudden, calls for a stadium upgrade or even a new rectangular stadium have more weight.

Now obviously, I also believe there should be another team in Sydney and also Brisbane. Now this doesn't have to happen overnight. It can be done 2 teams at a time rather than 4 overnight.

End result, more Derbies and more TV money. Which means more funding for the clubs.

What we can't afford is stagnation. The HAL is at the moment stagnation. Having only 10 teams after 12 years is a pretty poor state of affairs.

By adding more teams like SMFC, soccer in this country could at last ne UNITED. At the moment, it isn't.

The A League is going alright.

My issue is how can we get people interested in the State Leagues? They run winter comps without competition from the A League, they have an ok sort of standard, but hardly anybody goes. I think there's a much greater potential audience than what we currently see.

These are just random thoughts, and I don't pretend to be an expert, so feel free to dispute them. But I think these issues should be up for discussion.

The fact that every club (here in Victoria at least) is ethnic based must surely constrain their growth. I'm actually of Croatian heritage myself, but I'd love to have a local club that's jut about football and doesn't have any national/political/ethnic background. (I saw some tweets from Pave Jusup who's on the Knight's board after drawing Cockburn City - apparently a Yugoslav club - in the FFA Cup, and I know it was in jest, but I just thought FMD, I wish this could just be about football and not reprising 20th Century Balkan politics FFS.)

Now I appreciate a club like South Melbourne is trying to broaden its supporter base and good luck to them. And I appreciate the history of many of these clubs and the important role they've played, not just in football but in providing migrants with a sense of community in a new country. But as important as their histories may be, what do they mean to second or third generation Australians who are integrated in Australian society? Given the attendances, not much it seems.

How do we on the one hand respect what these clubs have done, and on the other, update the concept of local football to be broader and more inclusive?

I want to see the game flourish, and at grass roots level, I can see local clubs growing with heaps of juniors. The international game is followed in a bigger way than ever before. And the A League, you would have to say has been a success even with some of it's challenges. Club football at the state level is where exactly? If we want promotion/relegation, surely the second tier needs to lift its appeal and be able to put up a better case?

I go to watch Bulleen Lions sometimes, and they seem like a pretty good club. Although they have Italian origins, it seems to feel like a regular club without making you feel you need to be Italian to follow them. Some of the Greek clubs seem to be like that too. But do we really need each of South Melbourne, Heidelberg, Northcote, Oakleigh, Port Melbourne and Bentleigh? I like Greeks, but that's going overboard. Melbourne Knights are so Croatian I'm just not confident they can ever grow their support to what it should be given their history.

I don't think ethnicity in club football is necessarily a problem - and I'm not trying to paint it as the source of all the game's problems. It's not. I just think it's a problem when the whole basis of club football is ethnic identity. For example, I'm not against South Melbourne in the A League one day. (But I don't think they are ready or would improve the league now.) Can clubs evolve with the times and develop greater connections with communities outside their ethnic group? Or should the governing bodies do more to reform the structure of the game at the state level? Am I wrong? If so feel free to educate me.
