The two most successful sports leagues in the world, bringing in billions of dollars in revenue, the biggest corporate sponsors and mammoth audiences every game day, are now sharing an altogether different experience: The National Football League and the English Premier League are seeing startling, double-digital declines in television viewership this season.

Viewership through the first seven weeks of the N.F.L. season is down by 12 percent in the United States, while the audiences for E.P.L. soccer matches this season, which began in August, are down nearly 20 percent in Britain.

All the trends that drove viewers away from other programs on broadcast television in recent years, including cord-cutting and DVRs, never punished the N.F.L. and the Premier League in the same way. Fans — lots and lots of them — did not seem willing to look away.

They are now, in numbers that are alarming for the leagues, which have grown used to fans tuning in to their games in good times and bad, and for the networks, some of which have spent 10-figure sums for the rights to broadcast them. Viewership for N.F.L. games on CBS on Thursday nights, on NBC on Sunday nights and on ESPN on Monday nights is down by as much as 21 percent.

Cant speak for the NFL cause i dont kow it at all. But the EPL is not what it was 10 years ago.

Used to have teams reach the CL finals every year almost. Or at least the semis. Now not so.

Also used to have the best players. Looks like all those Marque players do not always translate in to long term consistent growth.

National NFL TV ratings continue decline

SHARESI WireSI WIRETuesday October 25th, 2016Through seven weeks of the 2016 season, the NFL’s TV ratings continue to suffer.Michael Mulvihill, executive vice president of research, league operations and strategy for Fox Sports, tweeted new numbers out Tuesday that included, most notably, steep drops for primetime games.Monday Night Football is down 24% from this time a year ago, Sunday Night Football is down 19% and Thursday night is down 18%. To a lesser extent, regionally broadcasted games are down — 9% for CBS and 1% for Fox, according to Mulvihill. He noted that cable news ratings are up on NFL Sundays, suggesting that the presidential race has made an impact on viewership.

Don't want to drag the thread off topic, but why the dramatic drop in EPL/NFL figures?

A-League ratings are extremely good if you compare us with the MLS. Their population is ten times ours and have other 'traditional' sports to compete with.

Well as per the article they seem to be blaming the debates. I find that too simplistic a reason in truth. Time will tell.

Because it is so expensive, and now BT sports as well you have to pay. And along with that you don't even get every game, it's expensive coverage for few games so most people use illegal streams.

WHY MORE AND MORE FOOTBALL FANS ARE SWITCHING OFF FROM LIVE TV

MAINSHARE
0GettyA plethora of entertainment options plus a shift in the viewing habits of a new generation means live football on the telly is not the draw it once was
COMMENT
There was intrigue earlier this month when it was revealed that Sky’s Premier League viewing figures in the UK were down 19 per cent in comparison to last year.'Without Messi, there'd be no Neymar'Sky offered plausible reasons for this decline – from competing interest in the Rio Olympic Games to a late stretch of summer. It also conceded that the games selected for broadcast through the first fifth of the season might not have been the most appetising.–– ADVERTISEMENT ––That was seemingly confirmed with the trumpeting of Liverpool – Manchester United last week as Sky’s most-watched Premier League game in three years with an average of 2.8m UK viewers. Moreover, Sky and BT have been investing heavily in apps and alternative ways for customers to access their content than simply through a satellite or cable television service. This, naturally, is to accommodate the many new ways people want to view. Customers using smartphones or tablets or other devices are not included in headline rating figures.Sky and BT Sport are just a few months into the richest television football contract in history having bought the rights for the Premier League for some £5.3bn. The overseas rights tops up the total fees paid to broadcast Premier League football for the next three seasons to £8.3bn. It works out at something close to £10m per match shown in the UK.'Ronaldo deserves to win Ballon d'Or'That relies on a subscriber base paying close to £50 per month for a Sky bundle including the sports option plus another £6 for BT Sport on top - and that's just for BT broadband subscribers. The price goes to £21.99 per month for those with another supplier. But the top-line decline in viewers prompted another question; will households decide live football is a luxury they can well do without? There has been a definite drift from what was once a thirst for live action on the box. Is it due to ubiquity? You can see any top Premier League team you like on television at least once a week. Indeed it’s a big shock when a team like Liverpool is not televised on one channel or another.Once upon a time you’d be lucky to see Barcelona or AC Milan once a year on the television – and that would only be if they drew an English team in European competition. Now you can see them twice a week. Moreover, the way people watch has undeniably changed – which is why broadcasters and advertisers are doing their best to keep pace. Viewers are not settling in to watch the same show at the same time any more. They are binge-watching season after season of TV shows and deciding at what pace they would like to view. What they miss “live” they catch on demand. Live sport is one of the last areas that viewers are still willing to make an appointment to view.Chelsea fans beg Fabregas to stayBut even when we claim to be watching football, we’re not really watching it. We barely ever watch football on television without a second device any more – a smartphone or a tablet – in our hands. We look up when we hear something happening. There is a world of entertainment options out there – high-tech and otherwise - meaning football is simply not a priority for what was for broadcasters once a reliable demographic. And that shifting of priorities and viewing habits in one generation is not being replaced with viewers from the next. To watch a game for 90 minutes is a lot to ask because consumption traits of the new generation are unrecognisable from the last. Information is now most effectively served in bite-sized chunks as the popularity of apps like Snapchat among them would prove. The viewing habits of younger players at professional clubs have even forced a rethink in how football is taught. More and more kids are put off by the idea of watching for 90 minutes and so clubs are increasingly turning to 3D virtual reality scenarios to point out what once was simply a matter of watching on television. This might be the first generation - since the pre-television days - with players who’ve played a game of football before they’ve actually watched a full one themselves.Indeed, there is far more frenzied excitement about the release of the latest FIFA and Football Manager video games than there is on a weekly basis about a plain old football match.'They are so enjoyable to watch' - Alonso lauds Klopp for embracing Liverpool's cultureClubs like Schalke and Paris Saint-Germain have actually begun to employ professional gamers – eSports players – to carry their brands to those watching on Twitch, YouTube and other live event platforms. This is evidence of diversification in the event that fans stop watching matches on television en masse; at least they’ll still be engaged with clubs on other fronts. There is a prevalent feeling that fans would rather immerse themselves in that kind of alternative reality than confront what’s on offer in the real world. At least there, you’re guaranteed entertainment. And that, above all, is what people want. There will be plenty out there thinking that last week’s 0-0 draw at Anfield was a con-job – from the hype sold to the unsexy game which played out.Why deal with that when you can construct your own version that might finish 7-5?Sponsored Links You May LikeVikings: Best Strategy MMOViking - Online Game8 Simple Investment Rules Buffett Used to Make His FortuneThe Daily Reckoning AustraliaExclusive High Paid Surveys For Those Born Between 1941 and 1981 living in Port Melbourne!Survey Compare AUSLearn Why Most Economic Professors Aren’t Wealthy and This Guy Is.thinkBIG  by Taboola 0WINLIVXVSWINMNU

Wow ,in the past there is no way MC v AU would have rated 100k.This ,even though AU had a youth team and Cahill was cooling his heals.
If this keeps up Fox will be digging deep into their pockets.

Maybe the FFA were smart to not sign this apparent  $55m dollar deal.

Already figures must be great even if its early days.

To put into perspective, this run is unprecedented. However, I don't think that Fox can ignore the precedent by previous seasons where the run wasn't as good. They won't just look at this season. I think Bluebird alluded to this previously.
